View Full Version : Animation: Splint
jedmitchell 03-15-2004, 07:56 PM this is a 2 minute short I finished a few weeks ago, featuring Splint, my pointy blue friend. it's kind of a test for what I'm working on now -- a 3 minute short that uses similar elements. the work was all done and rendered in Maya five-oh then edited in Final Cut. sound wasn't much of a consideration, so don't expect anything too fancy. also, it's one of my first 3D projects in the last couple of years, so go easy on me...
seriously though -- critique as hard as you'd like. I've moved on to another project and I have no interest in picking this one up again, but I'd still like to know what people outside my class have to say about it.
thanks for any responses.

also, I'm not much for the web, so if this link doesn't work or there are problems viewing the movie please let me know and I'll see what I can do to fix them. technically all you should need is the quicktime player, but we'll see...

This is pretty cool...the walking is kinda drawn out...maybe more time spent with the vending machine would be cool.
There's no interaction with the sand..footprints, or a bodyprint when he fell...it sounds windy, but there's no sand blowing around.
the expressions on his face are great, esp when the door closes on his hand, made me laugh...
overall good...looking forward to your future projects.

thanks nightmaredns and diffuser for the responses. what you've said is about what everyone else has said, so I guess I've learned what I could from this project. moving along now...
oh, and just as a side note, I knew about the lack of interaction with the desert. the project was supposed to be strictly character animation, so though I knew sand and wind should have been factors in a full production, I didn't even consider them for this animation.
anyway, thanks for the replies. I'll post my next piece at the end of may when it's finished.

I really like the story idea, and cool designs and look and everything, i just find the biggest problem to be with pacing.
there's no real pop to it....cutting down the length of some scenes, and speeding up some of the animation would really help this i think.
when i make a film, my plan is to never overstay my welcome...get in, get out, leave them wanting more.
i really like your film, but i find it drags a bit.
i wouldn't worry about little things like the sand interaction, that's so minor, not much to do with character acting.
the sound effects were a bit abrassive...a bit too loud in places i think.
but a well made film overall.

I liked it, although as others have said it was a little drawn out in areas, I think the addition maybe of a few minor desert characters, a scorpion for example, cutting to the little fella as he watches with mild amusemt the blue guys progress, and have him reacting to the blue guys falls and misfortune, I think that would help to break up the shots and add another comedy element perhaps, anyway hope some of my rambling helps with future projects...

The Wiz, Firegoat, thank you both for the comments.
The Wiz, I thought I had most of the angles on this film covered already, but I hadn't thought of adding a minor desert character or two. it's a simple idea, but I think it would have made quite a bit of difference (along with cutting another 20 seconds of walking...). good idea.
it is rather boring though, isn't it? oh well, I realized that about half way through the production and by then it was a little late... the next one though I'll make sure to keep the audience awake for.
thanks again, everyone.
