View Full Version : How can i let opacity maps cast shadows on geometry in max 4.2 (not a plane!!)
PIXAR 07-05-2002, 02:55 PM How can i let opacity maps cast shadows on geometry in max 4.2 (not a plane!!).
I need to create tons of animated tree leaves for a background, i saw a technique on rustboy.com where you add a animated movie with leaves on squashed spheres (which move also).
this technique should be very fast with great result (watch his movie in "the making of")
a: but how in max?? ps, raytracing is no option, takes too long to render.
b: which movie extensions support a alpha channel? (or should i do it with a sequence?)

You can place a map or sequence in a light as a projector. Search for Projector Map for lights.
Hope this helps.

If you want to cast your shadows through opacity maps, scrap the use the light as a projector idea, simply switch your light from shadow map to raytraced shadow, it will cast shadows through opacity maps.
I know you said raytraced shadows are not an option, but for realistic results, I'd say do it, Set up your render, go to bed and see what you have in the morning ;)

And you can adjust the size of the map by dragging a copy(instance) of it from the light to the Material Editor, and adjust it there.
If you don't wan't the light around it like that, try setting the U and V Tile to like .5
