View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character - Faeroon
Faeroon 07-05-2002, 01:38 PM The last challenge isnt even finished voting and now there's
a new one and I have to be in it *G*
I wanted to model a character (never modelled one before) and
I take this as a chance to try this :)
Here's a sketch (with story - all my stuff gets born with some kind
of strange story *G*) of the creature that I want to model.
Hope you like it - Comments and Critics HIGHLY appreciated (as usual)
Good luck to you all - Viel Glück :)

Very nice Faeroon. Are you going to be using Maya again for this challenge as well?
Faeroon

Hehe, thx so far - as I was saying: every single pic that
comes into my thoughts is born with some kind of story behind
it.
Got like ~50 scribbles/sketches/notes of characters laying around
but dont have the time (and mainly talent *g*) to model it :rolleyes:
@Zr0:
Yep *g*
Business as usual - Maya's going to be my roommate for a
long long time - XTREME MAYA-LUVIN' :xtreme:
At the moment I'm struggling with the modelling, it's the first
character of mine and somehow (even with some tuts) I dont
know where to start... :hmm:
Any hints? Would be nice

Here's the first attempt of modelling the Devourer...
damn.. I never thought it could be so hard to model a char
(naaah.. its hard for me - for other folks obviously not *G* *looks at some posts*)
Have mercy with me if it looks crappy in your eyes - I find it really
difficult to get the proper sizes and so on.
I hope you can give me good and creative critics, so that I can make
this mess of a fat T-Rex better *G*

PS: Modelled as low-poly and after that smoothed with ConnectPolyShape Tools
PSS: Yep i know - not much details yet but I wanted to know if this is the right start.

I think that's a great start. As far as character tut's have you checked out The CGchannel resources (http://www.cgchannel.com/story.php?story_id=1173)? Or how about the modeling The Dave way (http://www.cgchannel.com/story.php?story_id=1174) tut. Those were both good tut's.
I like what you've done so far. I think the only part that looks a bit off right now are it's shoulders. Everything else looks pretty good.

Hi Faeroon
I like your "enchanted forest" Picture and I also like this one.
The character-story is very nice and gives your Devourer a very good background! I'm very curious how you will develop your character further! :applause:

Geez... extrude extrude extrude... damn what a work :p
Yesterday I didnt work much on the model, 'cause I got other
stuff to do and today I've started modelling the claws and some
muscle structures (this is real hard if you never looked at muscles
in detail *G*)
C & C plz

PS: I've shorted the upper snout - the lower snout will have
BIG teeth - REALLY big teeth *G*

Man I really like that render. It loks sweet. Did those tutorial links help you at all?
Faeroon
07-07-2002, 08:59 PM
@-OZ-: Hehe - thx :)
@Xyron: Damn those muscles - you wont believe how much
I tweaked them and they are still not realistic :surprised
@ZrO: I watched the "Freak" Timelapse video of ambient whisper
several times - the mirror modelling way seems to work for me
and I'm trying to get my first char right
I'm really glad you like it :)

Glad to see your start. If you will make as much progress as in your last entry. You sure will come a long way.
Will try to keep an eye out on this one.
The only general crit I can think of is try to keep modelling lowpoly as long as possible. Until you´ve got the actual mass as you like it. Then turn into higher level of detail.
Good luck.

Just a quick update - modelled the legs and claws, added some
detail and MUSCLES - MUUUUSCLES.. DAMN THOSE THINGS!
@Mika:
Hey Mika - nice to see you posting again :)
I'm modelling with CPS (ConnectPolyShape), what means:
modelling in low poly with a mirrored and smoothed high poly version
I like that way - works for me :p
Here are the pics - gonna grab an ice and take a break *has headaches from moving vertexes*
C & C plz

Veeeeeeeeeeery nice claws!
But I think some of the muscles could be smoothed a bit more ;)
I hope there will be more details soon :applause:

yeah this "thing" looks realy cool
can't wait to see it complete

All the modeling looks great except for that seam down the middle of the forearm. That needs some refinement. Everything else looks super.

07-08-2002, 08:02 PM
hey its lookin good, might want to get rid of those boxy edges, although if u did it would look exactly like bezerker's (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12894&perpage=15&pagenumber=1)
interesting concept tho.
Faeroon
07-08-2002, 08:13 PM
@Xyron:
Yep, I'm working on that - have never modelled muscle structures before, its not an easy task.
@Borka:
*G* Ditto - hope I manage to finish this
@ZrO: I agrea - will be gone in the next rendering
@AroundTheFur:
I kinda like the look of the body so far - what exactly do you
mean by "boxy edges"
@ berzerkers BoB: I posted first :p and I NEVER stole any ideas - i think my BoB looks really pissed - berserkers is such a cutie, I wanna give'm a hug :love:
and mine got a whole other story. Nothing comparable - only the pose :D

07-09-2002, 08:45 AM
Sweet.
Yes, I am aware of CPS. Haven´t started using it though. I like the lowpoly way ;). Try to get rid of the seams where your extremities connects to the body. They should flow more together. The shoulders still look wrong. I think they should go more straight down, not out and then straight down.
You should get rid of that hard edge you´ve got just before your muscles meet.
It sure will be fun to see this finished. Good Work!

@Icecube:
Thx - trying to keep up with you guys :thumbsup:
@Mika:
Yep - seen those probs, gonna solve them with the next
full body render (i hope) :)
Here's a quick rendering of the head mask which I've
modelled tonight - isn't quiet the thing from the sketch
but I had to start over 3 times *grmblmblm* and after that
I gave myself a bit of creative liberty (damn... must have pressed
the extrude button a bit TOO much :surprised) and ended up
with this.
I hope you like it and give me some critics and comments.
Cheers
PS: The mask is oviously not finished yet - much detail work (rivets etc.) - its just the rough form of it.

This could be the last update of this character, 'cause
1.) Noone seems to care about it :rolleyes:
2.) there are just too much of those darn good entries out there
and it makes me sad showing this peace o' crap here
3.) I dont like the char anymore.. too much messing around with it
(got some other projects in my mind)
I'm not a character-modeller, that's for sure now :p
Maybe I'll work on this thing, maybe not - who cares :cool:
There are some folks who are the heros in this contest - just
depresses me too see such beautifull work
Have fun - if someone wants to: Gimme critics
http://arctic.unitedforcesofseed.com/contest/july_aug/8.jpg
PS: Not much posts in this thread - is this thing SO UGLY, SO BAD
it can't be made nicer? *GGG* Come on - give yourself a push and post
something
Clockwork
07-10-2002, 08:50 PM
It's looking great! Nice detail on the helmet/mask, I agree with some of the other posts tho, there are a few places on the mesh that have distinct lines as opposed to muscle areas, they kinda make him look like he came out of a die cast metal plate. Still fantastic work tho! Keep it up!

Faeroon, I think you've been doing a great job on your model. I don't think its crap, and I don't think you should quit with it. maybe you've just been having a bad day. Why don't you take a break from this model for the rest of the week and come back to it on Sunday. That might give you some new perspectives on the piece.
I'm sorry if it seems like I haven't been giving very constructive criticisims. It's just that it looks like you've been doing a good job from my POV. I try and say when I see something that stands out one way or the other, but for the most part this has been a solid piece.

07-10-2002, 10:29 PM
Man I thingk your character is coming along pretty damn well.
Who cares what other entries are inm the challenge as long as you do your best. Don't be intimidated and don't give up.
Good work!
Faeroon
07-11-2002, 08:47 AM
Thx for all your kind words :blush:
Maybe I had a bad day, maybe you are right Zr0...
Its just that most of the stuff of this contest is DAMN good
and if someone wants to step up to this lvl and doesnt get it
its a bit depressing - i think you know what I mean.
I give myself a break and will do some abstract stuff (CHAOS,
OH BEAUTIFULL CHAOS :buttrock: :wip: ) and hope that after
this I want to work on with the char.
If not - nothing bright and shiny lost here :D
Thx again - luv u mates :thumbsup:
Man that thing is sooooo tight! Keep on doing it! Did you use a mel script to get the lights to render so cool?
Faeroon
07-11-2002, 11:07 AM
@KID:
Hehe, thx - as I was saying: gonna take a break and go on after that
For the lights I've used a slightly changed Global-Illumination script from www.pixho.com
I'm a Maya Newb and I've never done any big mel scripting
(thank god that i learned programming some years ago, that helps a bit), I'm glad that there are folks that write such cool scripts :applause: :wip:

hey man..deffinately keep it going...I like your beast man...especially the helmet...all he needs is a few minor tweeks and I think he will be right on...your Beast is going great and I would hate to see you give up after coming so far! the only thing he needs is a few mesh tweeks..if you post a few unsmoothed wires in front, side, top,and 3quaters view and also a 1 iteration smoothed wire I will look at it and try to help you where to make the adjust ments to get the musles smoother! keep it going man!!! For the love of 3d:thumbsup: :thumbsup:

07-11-2002, 02:58 PM
Faeroon..i'd hate to see you quit.....remember, its not about the competition its about the journey....
i'm usin this a fun way to learn...you say your not a char artist...well you started with an awesome concept..and then you started model pretty tight to your sketch..........and while using a program still new to you!!!!!!
you are your worst critic ...read the posts
....take a break, lighten up and have fun!!

This is looking great! Although it looks like there would be a great deal of strain placed upon those front hands/feet if he truly walked like that. They don't look strong enough to support him imho. :thumbsup:

Quit? c'mon. You gotta go back to your Bob. (sounds like the title of a cheesy country song!:airguitar 'gotta go back to your Bob' he, he...)
anyway... there are some of us here who live in frustration at our newbiness (myself leading the pack), but I still see it as a GREAT opportunity to finish the challenge... while learning a bit and enjoying some GREAT eye-candy.
Hope to see your BoB continue to grow after the weekend.

@Berserk75:
Some of the muscles I'd reworked some minutes after my last
post - you can judge my next "full body render" and if you still
want it then, I'll post the wireframes.
@gwelty:
I know what those contests about, I was in the last and I've
enjoyed it - really :)
I learned much but at this state its just like "extrude, move vertex, select face, extrude, look from another perspective" etc etc
and I just need a break of this - it can make you dumb if you look a whole day at
a big bunch of colored points :insane: ;)
@Mentat7:
The poor guy has to pull a part of a whole planet - what do you expect from him *G*
The forearms are down to the ground, 'cause the burden is way
to much for him and he's walking really slow, faltering often, one leg at the time.
Left leg... right leg... left leg... and so on ... into eternity
@the Rev:
:airguitar "'gotta go back to your Bob..." *humming the melody* :P
I know the relief of finishing a model, but at the mom there are
so many other things rushing through my head - i can barely concentrate myself on one thing.
After so much nice posts there can be no other solution as to
finish this big fat pi**ed bastard :cool:

yeah, continue, it is all great! I like the helmet especially right now. You should maybe reference some animal, or even human, anatomy for the body.
if you fall off the beast what do you do? get back on of course.
PLEASE finish it!

@DKScully:
Hey - what the heck - look at the burden, what would you
look like if I would put the European continent on your back :cool:
I wanna see YOU dont sweat and look tired - I'll buy you a BIG BEER if you can do that ;) :beer:
@espaki:
I've got several books about human anatomy and I tried to make
the muscles look right - but for someone who has no muscles at all
(YES - i admit - I have no muscles :airguitar ) and has never looked
closely at those , it's preety hard to get a decent looking result,
but I'm kinda proud with what I've acchieved until now :cool:
