Done in Photoshop for my portfolio for university entry.
First piece of photoshop only artwork.
Probably somewhere between 10-15 hours (I know it probably doesn't show like I put that much effort into it, but I'm sure I did things the hard way).
Just trying to see exactly what specific areas need to be worked on. To me, I see the lower half of body, and the bindings as the areas in most need. Any suggestions? Worked from a tiny photograph reference on Burton Website of Terje Hakkonsen.
If anyone cares for it, I have 18 work in Progress Shots, this being the 18th.

Also, which lighting is preferred? I think I like the second more.

Do you have a little guide on how to navigate to your reference picture?

I'm no professional or anything, AND i'm still learning to use photoshop as well, so I don't know how much of this is going to come out of my ass. But here's what I think:

I actually prefer the top one a little more, since it seems to have some more vibrant details in the jacket(specifically the sleeve), and darker colors which help to bring out the details.

The second one on the other hand, seems to take away the details as a tradeoff for lighter colors. I'm assuming you did that to make the light source from behind him or to the side of him more prominent, and make the right side of the composition darker. However, I don't like how it just fades, it looks like you just did a simple gradient over the entire picture, and it just unbalances the picture composition a bit.

Constructive criticism: if you wanted to emphasize the light on the left side of the composition, and the shadows on the right side, I think you could probably try changing up the first one a little bit by adding some shadows and tones and maybe saturating the colors? on the right a little bit, instead of just using a black gradient on it. Or maybe, you could even darken the color of blue used on the right side of the composition, and bring out some detail in the snow as well.

One more thing: the gloves could use a little more shading on the contours to bring them out a little. Especially the left glove on the snowboard, it's a bright color that is sitting on top of a dark object that seems to have a cast shadow on it. So it could just use a little darker shade along the contour lines, or maybe some darker shading along the edges

Good paint job though!

first off, thank you for taking the time out to crit my work. very much appreciated.

i forgot to mention a few things when i posted. this entire piece was done basically one layer, (i used a second layer two times throughout the whole thing, as i was afraid to mess something up in a way that would be costly for time (3 portfolios due in about a month). Secondly, it was all done with one brush on 100% opacity and a wacom graphire II tablet. No pressure sensitive setting for opacity though. I use it to change brush size, though I am going to have experiement with pressure sensitive brush pressure. Not really sure why I chose to work these ways, as it made things more difficult then they probably should have, but nonetheless, it was something I wanted to see. Wanted to try something more traditional I guess.

Here is the link to the reference picture. I guess I should have linked in original.

Yeh the second one was simply a lighting effects last second tweak in Photoshop. Guess nearing the end, I was looking for a nice quick easy way to make it look different then what I had been staring at all this time :) I think you're probably right. First one seems a little better. I'm going to find a different way to focus more of the attention on the figure and left side.

Thanks for the tips on the gloves. I'll see what I can do to fix it up in a bit. Checking out a few things at the moment to make things really 'pop' if possible... and I think I'll have to play with the saturation a bit. Thanks again Dream.

Anyone else?
