View Full Version : maya mental ray lighting tutorial??
ZippZopp 03-12-2004, 09:48 PM I've modeled a few characters but the thing that is holding them back is the lighting and rendering. they aren't textured and I don't plan on texturing them anytime soon, but i'd really like to get that nice GI look and have had the hardest time. I'm not great with mental ray, but every attempt i've done has come out looking like garbage. are there any tutorials that run through a quick lighting and rendering setup with mental ray, i've not found any good ones...any help would be appreciated! thanks

I'm really sick and tired of people lighting their models with GI or faked GI. There's nothing worse than looking at someones models that have been lit by GI, I just think, wow, they know nothing of lighting and just threw GI in. Which as a modeler, you don't need to worry about lighting, default lighting is fine.

I agree with Emmortal1, I am also tired of all those unispired GI looks...
I learned lighting when there was no GI radiosity etc. and I went quite well. After GI became useable even on desktop PC's I tried to do everything with GI but now I came back to traditional lighting ( with some new tricks of course.)
You have more chances to create a certain atmoshere with standard lighting than you have with GI lit scenes. Not to mention you save a lot of time.
On the other hand GI has it advantages if you do only clayrenders, because it becomes easier to detect mesh problems and details might become more visible.
anyway... I would start with a good 3 point lighting but that was not what you have asked for so you might want to try out
