I *think* you need a LAN (local area network) to do that..
But I'm SURE you need a winNT-type OS.

Wow that would be interesting to test! Network rendering uses TCP\IP so theoretically it should work.

Considerations: You have to make sure you can find the other box via standard IP resolution.

The question is what do we SEND to the other node in the render network.

My concern would be the materials you use. Can you setup a shared location for the materials? Hmmmm
Wouldn't the renderer go to the location where the materials are based on file path?

Maybe copying the material directory tree to the other machine would work?

Interesting....

Hi vwmag, a few months ago a use some computers in my college like a render farm, nearly 30 pc's, and I don't have much trouble to get they working.

Max use tcp/ip to send and recive data, that way, if you know the ip addresses of your computers you could use they to get your own render farm.

Only need some stuff:

- All the computers must be connected to a LAN or Internet, in case they use internet must have a valid IP address, to check this try using the ping command between they:

in computer "A" type: ping 111.222.333.444
where "111.222.333.444" is the IP address of
computer "B", if the computer "B" respond, it's ready to the job.

in computer "B" type: ping 555.666.777.888
where "555.666.777.888" is the IP address of
computer "A", if the computer "A" respond, it's ready to the job.

- Now, you only need to configure the net render in max. Use the help in Maxto do this.

- The connection speed to internet will be the bottle neck in yor renders.

Good luck.

thank you everyone!

frankly speaking, I'm a complete novice. I never tried to setup a net render, so know little about it.

and dman, you said the connection speed is the bottle neck. I'm not sure the workflow of the net render. Is that a render image split into two parts for each computer? (into 30 parts in case of 30 PCs maybe?) then i think (if it is really in this way) the material that needed to be sent over the internet is the shared files like images, maps.... I dunno

I just came up with another work way round. I can use the WinXP's remote desktop, run 3ds max on my girlfriend's computer and press render. Isn't that cool? while you can still play games on your own computer! HaHa
:applause:
but in this case, you can only connect to one computer. So you can't create a render farm with your girlfriend*S* farm. Sorry, you have to choose one....
