View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character - timothyD
eirenicon 07-05-2002, 03:45 AM I'm back for another challenge, and hopefully I'll finish this time! Seeing as I haven't finished one since the PA topic, my chances may appear slim, but I SHALL WIN THROUGH! :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
Here's the start of my character. I'll be sketching him out pretty soon, for now I've just done a bit of 3d work. He'll be a big brutish animal, who can get a bit nasty after a long day of hauling. I may have a smaller creature perched on his back flogging him on, or something. Who knows what may emerge from my twisted mind

That's a neat looking head. It almost has a bird quality to it. I like it.

I really like what you did with the front of the head. What kind of body will it have?

what packages are you using?:xtreme:

ZrO-1: birdlike isn't exactly what I'm aiming for, so I'll see what I can do to change your perception :)
Roman: think "rhino". Something fat, heavy, on four stumpy legs.
Mattman: 3ds max4; boxmodeling with meshtools.

Hey! Nicely done! Yeah, a rhino body, with some carapace on it (?)

Ahhh from that angle it doesn't look so bird-like. I guess it was just the last camera angle.

Toce: I think I'll put some kind of saddle on the back. Some fiendish little creature will be riding him :)

hmm, that's real different from wat I was expecting. Much smaller body. And it now looks more friendlier. Different. I'm not sure.

Roman: friendlier? I'll have to change that :)

The best thread I´ve seen so far this month!!!!!
Realy like your character. I´d add some detail where the head meets the body and the legs need some attention.
5 stars!

Oh, sorry, just realized that one can´t give stars in a challenge.
Anyway, your work is worth a lot of them!

yeah, awesome
it's already so damn good, even without all the tiny details you're about to add (right?;) )
Stereotype is right though, the legs and feet look very wrong to me, better try to get their general shape right before adding anything else
i'll follow this thread with all of my eyes :buttrock:

Stereotype: Thanks for your comments! Appreciate it. I've worked on the legs some, and still have to add some wrinkles around the neck.
fist: Yup, I've got a month to add nothing but details :) Thanks.

Wow! This is a great entry! I think he needs a lot more little things strapped to his back, like those cylinders.
Keep up the good work!

yep, the feet are great now
i like how you made the "toes" go 360 around the feet ;>
makes them look very solid / like they withstand a lot of weight
eirenicon
07-07-2002, 03:46 AM
otacon, gabe, dmonk: Thanks guys
pearson: I'll be added lots of luggage to this guy. :)
fist: The toes don't go quite 360°, but they're definitely more supportive.
I've begun work on the rider of this beast. Don't worry, though, I'm far from finished with my creature:

Ant: Thanks mate, good work on yours too :)
DimitrisLiatsos: Ayup, I'll be loading this guy down. Don't want to get into the serious straps, luggage etc. until I've finalized the general shape of him. I may still make some changes.
Manowar: Could you specify what about the leg muscle you don't like? Does it look out of place on this kind of beast? Thanks for the comment, though!

Good. The only thing i can see is that the luggage he has now doesnt look like much of a burdon, but im sure you will add the heavier stuff later on.

Otacon: He'll be lugging so much stuff I'll be surprised if I don't get a call from the SPCA :p

Haven't had a whole lot of time to model lately, so this update isn't much. I've just written a bit about this guy, and I also have a wireframe for ya.
The Uduu is commonly seen on the roads of the Lower Kingdom. It is a popular merchant animal, able to carry and pull large loads. While it is ponderous and slow, it is used by many trader families and even nomads to haul their possessions and caravans. It is a temperamental beast, and will often only respond to their skilled handlers.

Wow! I like this one a lot!
My only suggestion would be to add more barrels.
Keep up the good work!

Neat stuff man. The original head didn't remind me of a bird, but a dolphin. But it's gone through several changes since then. I think though that you slim up the torso a bit. It is a fantasy animal, but it'd be scraping its stomach against so many outcroppings of stuff. I think that you should look at elephant legs for reference. It looks fantastic so far.

Well, that was a bit of a break. Back to work, though!
BrainFaucet: I don't know about more barrels - I think I'm going to have him pulling a caravan type contraption. I'll see though...
Gamoron: Yeah, he's a bit too fat. I've slimmed him up a little in this update, but I'll take another look at him. Thanks :)
dosadi: Thanks!
rizob: Thanks for the comments... I agree, the knees are a bit simplistic and could use a closer look. And the eyelid is a bit temporary until I get an animatable solution.
Update:
He looks significantly different in this version. I'm not sure whether or not I like the new look of the head; you tell me if you think it's good or not.
