I posted this reel in the 3d gallery and also under artists looking for work but thought maybe I should post it here to get some real critiques on the animation from other animators. So let me know what you think. :D

Very good stuff Kevin, congratulations if all the stuff was done by you, loads of work to a very high standard.

ps: could do with a bigger size video, loads of detail is lost on such a small picture.

Thanks Gru, I'd like to make it bigger but I didn't want too big a file.

So am I to assume everything on my reel is perfect? I thought surely I could get some critism from some of you.
Hmm... I wonder why I can't get a job then?
:scream:

Visual quality is pretty good (i.e. it's clean)

If you're not getting positive responses from where you've applied you may want to consider re-cutting your reel.

My suggestion......cut the pizza commercial. Open with the skeleton scenes first, and don't jump cut with the rest.

Right now, I think the best parts are dilluted by your weakest scenes (hockey pizza commercial).

Rock monster scenes are okay. Good for the back end at least. Show compositing levels (background plate, cg layer, color match, etc.) of the skeleton forest fight scene if you wanna pad this re-edit.

I think your work samples are pretty good for broadcast type work (commercials, sfx for tv shows, maybe even for movies), but for games.....not quite (based on content).

Good luck.

Thanks for the crit Pinoy. I will give your ideas some thought. I've actually gotten some of my best response from the hockey stuff. Go figure? BTW I'm not really looking for game work. TV/Film is my focus for now. It's always so hard putting a real together. It's only been about 6 weeks since I finished this and I already have new stuff to show. It's a never ending process. At least until I get a job.

I like the skeleton stuff, and would like to see the rest.

The rock monster has a few animation problems....the first that comes to mind is his right hand coming over the mountain floats a little bit. Not a biggie. But he doesnt seem very heavy when he comes over the grassy hill.

The hockey stuff is okay, but not really great in my opinion.

And you're right about always having new stuff you want to do or show... :D Every time I get a reel done, I'm ready to start a new one...

Maybe try some acting with dialogue. Thats always good to put on a reel.

Good luck!

I think your work samples are pretty good for broadcast type work (commercials, sfx for tv shows, maybe even for movies), but for games . . . not quite.

I don't get this . . . are you saying that the level of expectations for broadcast and film animations are lower than games?

are lower than games?

Now where did I say this???

Expectations are different, but I never said higher or lower, better or worse. And you misquoted me by leaving "based on content".

Why would I send a flying logo reel to a videogames maker when they want (as written in many of their websites) to see walk cycles, idle cycles, model turnarounds, etc.

And vice versa....what's the use of low res modelling skills to a vfx studio speciliazing in compositing high res cg with live action?

Don't you think you better your odds of getting hired if you focus your reel to a particular industry?

Oh, man!!!! Totally my fault, here!!! I've put the horse before the cart and responded to your reply without seeing his vid ( I was still dl'ing it) and I feel like an ass, now. Sorry, dude . . . your comments now make total and complete sense and, yeah, (as I lower my head in shame) I agree with you . . .

Next time I'll remember to pull my head out before I respond ;)

Peace and no hard feelings, eh?
