Hey guys,
First ,I just want to say congrats to everyone for last challenge there were lots of great entrys keep up the amazing work!
Second, here are a few rough concept sketches...I just wanted some feed back before I choose which to refine and model...so I'll stop blabbn' and let you guys decide!

I think number 2 has more character

erilaz

The first one has attitude:airguitar
The second seems to have more character though.

The first one is interesting... maybe if you lost the horn. I do agree the second one has more character (it grabbed me right away). The 2nd one is also quite a bit different from what most other people are posting, whereas the first seems to be typical of what everyone else is doing.

Definitely the second one. You will have a harder time making something he can pull. You could rig him so he pushes something instead, he looks like he can stand up on his hind legs.

thanks for the input guys...looks like I will be working on the second guy....hopefully I will have a refined sketch later today!

This is a though decision, but I got some feedback.
My eye fel first on the second one, he is more friendly but also gives me a really strong guy but lazy interpretation. Like carrying/dragging really havey loads and doing it step by step, really slow. I think his hands haning on the ground implies that(his lazyness), As if he is to lazy to take them off the ground.

The second one is the oposite, a really energetic fast strong runner but for loads less heavy. He kind a work with pulling wagons to transport people/alians from place to place.
He also reminds me of those little always happy and energetic dogs that just have to much enery and jump all the time arround to loose some.

But if you had to choose I would say take the 2nd one, I've seen enough of those really 4 footed strong bulies already but that musn't be the reason you wouldn't choose to make the 1st one.

 Well good luck in the challenge.

P.S I actually love to see them both moddeled:cool: ;)

Yep, go with the second one.

DEF number 2 !!!

Mr. Nice Guy
07-05-2002, 02:09 PM
I say the 2nd one.

Bezerker75
07-05-2002, 02:14 PM
Well I'd say that's a resoundinging..go with the second one...so I am..and I could't wait to start after seeing how many of you have so much done already...I had to do some rough block out...so to keep you updated here is the rough!

Bezerker75
07-05-2002, 02:15 PM
here's a smoothed render....

OrestesMantra
07-05-2002, 02:44 PM
Looking good!

Btw, if you still want to use the first guy....you could have them both pulling the same load. Since they have different personalities one would be overpowering the other or something and you get a real interesting scene.

Just a thought:lightbulb

Your BOB is looking really good.
I really like the progress of frst the simple blok version and the the smooth and then the eyesnd more details.
I really would like to see a wireframe of the detailed one but then without the smooth tool on it.

Wel I hope to see some progress soon.

Bezerker75
07-06-2002, 08:43 PM
here is the wire as you requested...hopefully I can get some more time to add some more details this weekend..if not..I will post more next week!

Your bob is looking really great. I think it wouldn't look so much like a baby if you add more features around the eyes and mouth. not too much though. imho i don't mind that it looks like a baby bob.

anyway this one is one of my favorites so far.

good luck:D

dosadi
07-07-2002, 06:26 PM
Lookin' good! I really like his expression, and his proportions are wonderful! Have you decided what he'll be carrying yet?

AJ

I love his whole shape/posture... makes me wanna give him a hug. :D

Bezerker75
07-08-2002, 02:39 AM
hey guys thanks for the comments and crits...I will be posting more stuff probably tomorrow night...I haven't decided what he will be carrying yet or how big he is...I have a few ideas that I may sketch out...I have just be fine tunning the mesh to get it to a point for rigging...( wich is always the hardest part for me) anyway I was also thinking that I would have one adult Bob and a baby bob in training next to its father....what do you think of that Idea?

Bezerker75
07-09-2002, 04:47 AM
here's a small update! Still workin out what he should carry or pull..and that will determine his size...anyway C&C always welcome in the meantime!

07-09-2002, 05:34 AM
goregous texturing. That looks really sweet. I love the harness too. This is a really great piece.

pearson
07-09-2002, 05:48 AM
Great texture! Nice colors! :applause: You're too fast!!:annoyed: :D

About the harness...I like it, but it shouldn't be all one piece like that, IMHO. I think it should be made of pieces stiched or riveted together and joined with buckles or clasps.

Keep it up!:bounce:

Spazmo
07-09-2002, 08:50 AM
Bezerker, your character "rocks the pooper". If you don't know what that means...I'm sure you can figure it out. You should be really proud of your BoB. It's coming along better than all the others I've seen so far. Bravo bravissimo.

07-09-2002, 09:31 AM
wow, I love it!!!!! Simple but efficient, and the texturing looks good too!!!

great work!!

Mr. Nice Guy
07-09-2002, 09:40 AM
wow your harness is looking good. How have you made it that it fit so good.

I will following the rest of your progress

fellah
07-09-2002, 10:15 AM
this one is so cute! really good concept and modeling, I wanna hug that beast ;)
but the skinTexture looks a bit weird in my eyes. maybe if you break it up with more layers, add some smaller bumps and randomnes. that might do the trick. or make the current bumbMap bump out more..
good work, keep it up! :)

Bezerker75
07-09-2002, 02:52 PM
Thanks for all the great feedback:thumbsup:
ZrO-1: thanks man...your piece is looking awesome as well!

pearson: I agree 100% about the stiching and buckles thing...I just ran out of time last night to finish putting them in...I will probably add those tonight and maybe a few items he will be carrying!

Spazmo: "The pooper" hmmm...thanks!!! I am glad you like him...stay tuned for more updates tonight!

Mr. Nice Guy: I will post a low poly cage tonight...but basically I duplicated the bob mesh and deleted some of the faces...then I used a modifier in max called push to raise it slightly off the skin of the bob...then I used solidify...which is another modifier which gives thickness to the polys( kinda like and extrude but better for this type of extrusion) then I tweeked the hell out of it using meshtools and added a meshsmooth...and walla instant harness! hope that helps!

fellah: I agree...I think the skin textures is just temp right now...just wanted to through some bump on him to work out the UV's ...I still have a lot to do texture wise...although I will mainly focus on the modeling....and when that is done I will add better textures and rig him up!!

If anyone has any ideas on what he should carry or pull..I would love to here them....My thoughts were that he is owned by a vagabond drifter that collects lots of junk...I was thinking of mabe having him pull a small shingle dome hut on a wooden wagon. I don't know yet...I guess we'll just have to wait and see what unfolds

:D :D :D

I was also thinking that I would have one adult Bob and a baby bob in training next to its father....what do you think of that Idea?

You...have...to...do...that.

It would be the sweetest thing ever to see a little version of this fella in a 'training harness' looking up at his dad...

Oh god - you simply HAVE TO!

I won't rest until it's done, you hear! :D

This is hands down my favourite character at the moment... for design and realisation, it's all coming together fantastically. Please please continue doing what you're doing!

AJ_23: I will do it just for you man... I think your last character would look great riding one of these things!! which reminds me who wante to name this guy...I am taking suggestions and will pick one at the end of the week!

Man feels like I have sooooooo much left to do....good thing we have some time left...lol I have so many ideas for Bob now...and so little time...but I will finish!

Neat! I like the idea of it being some sort of personal riding beast for royalty - with the throne and all. amazingly clean mesh. out of curiosity, how many polygons is it right now?

ok guys...I decided to work on bob's owner for a bit...and here is a preliminary wire...more to come soon!
Story line:
His name is Lem Guile and he is a Goblin entreprenuer...a Merchant of sorts...he aquired "Bob" and his son "BOb Jr"(that's what well call them for now) in a barter.....more on that later too...I want to get some more work in tonight!

wow 3 new posts and no C&C....Hmmmm....do you guys not like Lem guile?oh and what about Bob's name...he'll'' be so sad if he doesn't get a name!!!:scream:

AJ
07-11-2002, 12:02 PM
do you guys not like Lem guile?

Of course not... I despise any creature that would make that cute BoB look so sad and dejected

j/k - he's looking cool - especially his gigantic hat :D

As for naming the BoB - I reckon you should call him Lumbah and the little 'un Tumb

Pancreas
07-11-2002, 12:13 PM
Absolute loving creature! He looks so depressed, as saying "oh, another journey, not again". And the rider is amazing! I like very much his sock-hat, he has no ridiculous sense, he feels the fashion runnin´in his veins!
I think the beast should be called Gooshy and the raider Lord Fistror the Charismatic.

Danko
07-11-2002, 12:57 PM
Love the leather harness! It fits perfectly on place and seems functional. Excellent! Btw, how did you modeled it? did you split the character mesh with a bolean and then extrude that faces? Very very good result anyway! Congrats! Great work on the "chair" too. :applause:

07-13-2002, 08:02 PM
haha, that's great..he gets more awesome with each update..the seperations on the harness and lashings, etc. are looking good, do more of that..

Like the throgs too..not that it would be the most sanitary place to hang them, but his owner doesn't seem to have much regard for others :)

ZrO-1
07-13-2002, 08:10 PM
I really like the lashing holding down the chair and the throgs. One crit I have right now (and I've been noticing this on other peoples pieces too) is that the harness looks like it's just a raised part of the skin, rather than a separate piece that is placed on the beast. I would suggest to keep a few places really tight like they are now, but to make the bulk of the harness a bit looser, and have a few other places actually off the skin loose.

 Just my 2 cents

Fedron
07-13-2002, 08:30 PM
Very nice job berzeker. The throne idea is very original. An dthe detail of the 2 hanguing bodys is really cool too. I agree with ZrO-1 about the harness and the sticky too skin inpression. Otherwise very good job. I was thinking in the royalty stuff and maybe you could inspire yourself in how asian elephant are dressed for parade and processions.

Cheers looking forward for more

 :bounce: ....................Now I am excited.........that is one of the elite beasts of the challenge thus far in a very good group of beasts.

Clean and fun, plus the details are very high end, I am very big on details, and depth within creations, and you are giving it the extra mile Bezerker75..............very nice, keep it up.

ZrO-1..............Brought up a very good point about the harness looks like it's just a raised part of the skin..............you should put a separate piece that is placed on the beast here and there that protrudes out as ZrO-1 suggests.

Anyways great job, keep it up, you are one of my fav's right now in a really good field. :)

10 out of 10 for modelling but you need to break those textures up. The bump is too high and too even dsitributed.

Mr. Nice Guy
07-14-2002, 02:16 PM
Thank for explaining how you did you your harness

Your goblin looks good. I really like his hat. And those throgs reminds me at Star Wars.

Keep on going

Bezerker75
07-14-2002, 03:08 PM
Hey guys thanks for the coments and crits...I will post some updates later tonight...I think you're all right about the harness! I started pulling some areas up off the beast! good suggestion! about the texture...well the bump on the beast is just temp..actuall all the textures are temp for the time being....I am trying to focus more on getting the model built to the way I want it! I will probably retexture after that is complete! Until my next post!

07-15-2002, 03:38 AM
after much diliberation and pulling some areas of the harnes off the beasts skin I decided I didn't like the way it looked so...fitted harness it is...I will probably just keep adding more stitching and things of that nature..also I decided the piece of harness on his head is actually going to be a decorative cloth (textures to come)...anyway just wanted to throw this update up... he now has more stiching on the harness and a net bag filled with "woggle melons".....much more to do...but I may need to get a new video card soon...cause the one I got now sucks and the scene is getting mighty hard to work with...I have to keep everything low poly and bounding boxes to rotate in the viewports...anyway...here ya go!

thanks for the crits and comments...just curious is you guys could be a little more specific where the leather would be coming off the body more...maybe draw on the image so I have a better understand what you mean...I tried to pull it off the body in a few spots but it really didn't look right...but maybe I was just pulling off the wrong areas...please help! I also plan to add more stiching...I think that will help define it more as a fitted harness...anyway keep coming with the crits....give it all to me! mostly dislikes...so I can fix them...lol

 Very nice Berzeker!!!! The new bump map is really cool. The diference between the harness and the skin is very noticeable now. If you can, you should make the harness leather peaces more thick and it would be perfect..
Very nice details, the web full of water melons, the hanging dead frog dudes, the a$$ glowing dude in his cage, etc......
Very clean design Berzerker. I of the most neat in the comp.
Keep going

07-20-2002, 08:57 AM
I like it so far, and alot of nice details! but (and I hope I ain't a pain in your butt when I'm saying this again :) ) but I still don't like the bump map on his skin.. I dug up some images from the "dinosaur" movie to show you:
http://la.siggraph.org/Newsletters/images/jun00-dino.jpg
http://www.kinoweb.de/film2000/Dinosaur/pix/dino06.jpg
http://www.kinoweb.de/film2000/Dinosaur/pix/dino20.jpg
http://cobrand.salon.com/ent/movies/review/2000/05/19/dinosaur/cover.jpg
notice how the bumpMap look in the areas where there's much movement and vice versa.
anyway, it might be to much work to make a bumpMap like that, you'd probably need to UV and paint it by hand(if that's not what you've already done??) but it's just a tip. if not now, maybe you get use of it in the future,

take care

hey guys thanks for all the possitive feedback:thumbsup:
You guys rock!
Fedron: I will try and add a little more thickness to the leather...if it doesn't alter too much in the way of moving every detail out...hmmm...I will have to play with that one! thanks for the advice!
fellah: Those images really help alot...I didn't have much to use for reference when I was painting the bump...thanks for diggin those up...I had a few small pics of elephants...
do you think the folds and bumps in those pics from dinosaur are created with a bump or some kind of displacement map? also I wonder if some of the folded areas in the neck are actually modeled? anyway thanks again and I will try and work on the texture some more!
ZrO-1 and sherban: I was debating on making the scene a bit darker (night like) and I still may...I will just have to find a way to do it without compromising the details....

Once again...thanks guys:thumbsup:

I thinnk you should put some nostrils on him - poor fellah...:)

Furthermore some more paintwork on the leatherstraps is needed imo. A gloomier environment would probably look sweet too - but you already mentioned that.

Once again very nice work and hope to see some updates soon.

Bezerker75

I have some updates coming soon...
Rok: You know i was thinking about nostrils then i forgot...hmmmm...good looking out! but as far as the paint work on the leather straps..well...the challenge is really more about the modeling...and that's my main focus right now...I don't have any diffuse textures on this whole model with the exception of the bump maps...everything is done with flat shaders and bumps..and little adjustments in the specularities... maybe after i finish the whole model I will go back in and really texture this beast..I think he deserves to be finished!!

what do you guys think about a blow hole like a whale has? no maybe just regular nostrils! i don't know yet!:bounce:

rok
07-21-2002, 01:58 AM
or a short trunk-like thingy :hmm:

Bezerker75
07-21-2002, 04:07 AM
ok well here is tonights update...been tweeking the textures..haven't finished just got to the front leg...still have the back leg and tail to go...I want to thank you FELLAH:thumbsup:  for those images...perfect reference...and also for challenging me to push myself...I still have some work left to do on the bump...but you insired me to take it further than I probably would have...thanks...
That's why I love this forum...and that is what it is all about anyway...
so anyway...this is about 3.5 hours of back and forth between max and photoshop...all hand painted with my trust wacom tablet...still got about another 3.5 hours to go I would say...blah...blah..blah...listen to me ramble...lol..anyway until tomorrow..later guys and gals!

:applause: the new bump map is a great great improvement Bezerker!!!! This is geting better and better!!!

Ok so, an advice, try to give a second pass to the bump map, BUT this time with the harness. Wearing the harness produce some folds in some areas. And you can optimize your effort, i mean the work you did in the bump for the top of the head is awesome, but useless because of the harness covering this part.

Keep going!! This is becoming really exiting!!

Excellent job! He’s looking really great! I do agree with Fedron however and think you need to add a little more depth to the leather. I don’t think this would necessarily require a ton of work, to at least fake and add a little more interest to the material. Often leather goods like this, they use various thickness in the leather weight, depending on how much pressure is going to be applied to the piece. So, if just certain areas were thickened up, it could be enough, to add a bit a variation and believability to the harness. Also, the harness looks like it would be attached quite firmly and your bob, doesn’t exactly look thrilled about it, maybe add a little detail in areas where it would be tight and pulling on his skin. And definitely take advantage of your lighting idea, even if you don’t darken the scene much!
Well, I’ve got a quick project to whip out in a couple of days, then though, I think you’ve inspired me, although I’d be starting late, you haven’t been working on it all that long and yours looks great, so if I can find the time, I think I need to jump in too! Good luck to you, keep it up!

Hehe... just watched clerks the other day, Bezerker; your name inspired from their death metal song in the movie?

Bezerker75
07-22-2002, 08:11 PM
hey guys thanks for the great feedback this is what I was looking for...I will try and post some updates tonight if I have time...

Rhid1en: My name is actually partly insipered by clerks..but mainly cause my last name is Zurcher pronounced (Zerker) and I was a little nutty and did a few crazy things in college and my buddies used to call me Bezerker...I think they were part insipered by clerks though! so anyway that's the origin!

Daxx:??????? Too Human Shape????:curious:

k-well I finally finished a landscape for this guy...anyway...here are two composites...I tried to render them in one scene but it was taking forever to render so I just rendered them separately and overlay the beast in....also did a little touch up...this is just for fun....final submission will probably be just gray scale no colors...or are we allowed to use colors? hmmm...well here are two variations anyway...and a wire of the background!

Definitely the RED one, even if you can't use colours it's a great portfolio piece.

You have my vote for this one!!!!!!

AroundTheFur
07-25-2002, 01:13 PM
I think the red one could be a lot better if you added some more subtle green to the beast, ie toe nails and little hangin guys have a more greenish tint(even tho its not being judged on texture i think it would help the image greatly). I do like the mood of the blue one more, so play around and see what comes out. cool stuff.

ZrO-1
07-25-2002, 04:20 PM
Color is allowed in the compatiotion. You just can't use textures. So you can change the color-value of your material, you just can't (or rather won't be judged) map a texture file or proc-texture to the color node.

The only one would be the lamp, there's something amiss about it, I dunno what but take a look at it, maybe you'll catch it to  .
