View Full Version : The best SUB-D Human modeling approach?

What's lacking are any tutorials or techniques on approaching a human body. I tried tackling this with this guy's approach:

(done in lightwave unfortunately)
His approach seems to have no concern for maintaining loops or avoiding tris and ngons. That has created some serious issues with my model. But I have to say his end result is amazing(I just don't know how well it animates).
I hope someone can tell me if my model is ressurectable and/or guide me to a better tutorial for tackling something like this. Even better, possibly post a model that's been modeled correctly to analyze:)

Here's an example of one of my major problems...
The breast area has some 'flow' issues depicted in the images below:

Notice how the breast fails to flow into the deltoid area properly.
Here's the reason:

The loop doesn't flow up, it diverges around the back due to an ngon.

Here I significantly reduced the poly count in an effort to re-work the loops so that the leg has it's own single loop and the abs have their own:

Problem is I can't for the life of me figure how to fill in the missing polys and not break the loops.
So the final question is... Am I obsessing over getting these things perfect? Or do I need to start from scratch to resolve this loop issue better- and are these even the loops I should be worried about? TIA so much to anyone that can help out.

Man you're really obsessing over loops to the detriment of the process.
Does it look ok if you turn off wireframe? If so then just move on. Doesn't make alot of sense obsessing over something that no one will ever see but you.

Well, If you look at the first image you can see there are issues in the area circled. The flow of the mesh in the breast area is somewhat broken due to the presence on an ngon. The loop actually breaks off just before the ngon area, but that's been adjusted on my model- the ngon IS the issue, it's creating the blotch in the mesh.
From the cgtalk subd thread linked above, the general consensus seems to be that loops are very important for proper stretching when animating. I just need to know which ones are the most critical and if my model can accommodate them. Will the leg deform properly with the loops extending upwards through the whole body, rather than looping back down at the pelvic area?
When it comes to animation, I want this thing to deform perfectly.
