View Full Version : Fur Attractors
popnGEAR 07-05-2002, 12:32 AM I've setup a simple scene with some grass made with fur. Now I added a fur attractor with dynamic joints and added an air field for wind. Playing around with the settings I see that in order to get the good motion I need to set a high influence value, but doing so results in a loss of shape in the grass due to it conforming to the joints(grass looks far too erect). Is there a way to keep the general shape of the grass and still have a high influence motion?
Thanks

Vancouver ayy? Cdis?
Well I am not really sure what u are wanting, if u could post some pictures or whatever, I might be more helpful. Umm U could add some noise to it so the effect is more random, then at least some of the blades will hold there shape....Sorry cant reall say much, to help..

I was just experimenting with the same thing. One thing I had to do was to increase the number of attractors. Then, I made sure the scale of the attractors was small enough to be around level with the grass (you may have to decrease the size of the joints so that you can still see the attractors as something other than a big bundle of joints).
I had some pretty good luck with it. Also, make sure that your turbulence and wind aren't knocking the attractors flat. If the attractors go flat then the fur they influence will also go flat.
That's not much to go by, but it might help. Also, I assume you're familiar with the nice little tutorial in the Maya help file. If not, check it out, as it explains exactly what you're trying to do.
That's it.

mr maher, yeah i did go to cdis actually, i was in your cd300 class :) and regardless of noise (which i do have) the attractors override it anyway.
ACfred: Yeah I tried increasing the attractors also but to get what I wanted made it incredibly slow for feedback, and the attractors would randomly blow apart, was pretty weird. No turbulence yet and the wind levels are farely low, I only wanted subtle motion. I was doing those tutorials last night, actually I was doing the fur animation one when I ran into this problem. Thanks for the suggestions.

This next question may be a little too simplistic, but are when it blows up are you scrubbing through the animation or rendering out a playblast? Can you post a small version of the playblast so we can get a better idea of what's happening. I think I know, but looking at it might help.
Another thing to check -- try moving your wind node farther away from the grass. Also, what are your wind node settings (just the basics)? That'd also help debug. If nothing seems to work, feel free to send me the file and I'll see if getting my grubby hands on it will help at all.

Well what happens is it will play fine, i'm watching, then it just blows up(not playblasting or scrubbing).
I have basic wind settings, wiht increased magnitude, sometimes up to 20 but I see no noticable changes. Speed is .75 up from .5 but that also shows nothing new.
Oh and another thing that is weird are the tips of the grass. Without the attractor/dynamics it looks fine (www.geocities.com/poopngear/grass02.jpg)
but with the attractor/dynamics applied the tips of the blades will zig zag. Actually I can't seem to duplicate the problem right now, but I'm sure it will pop up soon.
