Title: Boxy Lady, Pufferfish (3D)
Name:
Country:
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, Rhino

This is first and earliest concept for the Boxy Lady project. The idea for this came while making my entry for Alienware Challenge, therefore the "boxy" design :) I kinda got stuck with it.

i can see a style emerging, between this, and your Alienware challenge. Congrats btw.

Looks cool. could use some color diversity on teh frame though.

Wow that looks massive, like a city. Not too related, but it also reminded me of Akira when all the junk and debris started to attach to Tetsuo's body. Anyway, its a striking image, very original.

I totally agree with Ultragames; a new style is emerging! Looks really cool so far. As soon as I saw it a knew it was done by that "Alienware winner guy". :) Keep posten'em!

Very very good looking. I was awed by your Alienware entry and you're doing it again. Love the style that you are using (and yes, as was said above it's reminded me when all the metal junk was attaching to tetsuo. :P)

Yes very good style the choppers idea sends chills on to my spline

My only crit a small one would be to have the tiles a little bit more random, different size shapes, position, and the textures applied should differ a bit on their projections.

Holy Greeble! ;)

Very cool image, yup, no crits from me.. though the texture of the blocks is a bit unrecognisable, but I guess it's some kind of marble?

VERY NICE!

might want to use some jets instead of helicopters... helicopters have a pretty low ceiling and can't quite access the clouds... UNLESS she is bringing in the fog with her... and a change of atmosphere as she walks...

that's what i'll go with... can't bring this image down any

congrats!

Jari,

Fantastic image. I really cant wait to see the final animation!

For the people who wanna know how he did it, if u read his 'making of' article on how he made his AW Challenge entry, it gives a pretty good guide 2 how he pulled off this amazing technique.

Fantastic work mate-but ive always told ya that! :)

That's fantastic idea and style. I would only sugest do women with lower specularity, and play more with lighting. She looks too flat to me. I was also thinking about different color, maybe desaturated green or so, just to make nice color scheme of whole still.

If you prefer metal look I will sugest put some enviroment reflection on her body.

Nice :applause:

Thank you all for your comments

oxyg3n, cipher : will send wire soon

liquidcourage1: you got some really good points there, thank you.

kreno: boxes are not moving separately at least not all. I still have to think up all the little details.

Biped: nope

Poju: You really hit the spot. Now that I look it, yep, that bugs me too. Have to fix that.

Pyke: Cheers :)

dreamtalks: Thanks for the tips, good points there.

Anvirol: Kiitos : )

Cheers!

Absolutely incredible ! That is one of the most creative things I've seen in awhile. I really love the idea, and the execution, TOP NOTCH man. The atmosphere and sense of scale is amazing !

Edit: I just have to ask, were those clouds and sky painted in Photoshop ? Or was it photo ? If those were painted that is just even more incredible.

The helicopter/sky image that reminds one of an action film trailer; together with the boxy lady it looks a bit motley yet - not like a great intention or concept behind but rather like a test image. Or (only from my sight) there is a lack of content - the picture's got no discernible story line, that holds the part together. Perhaps it's also because of the bit typical clumsy shape of a woman 3D character I dislike it (more precisely: the right arm and the upper left corner of the image which is too shapeless; the right breast might be too dimly lit). But as you said - it's a concept. (Anyway I love your alienwave entry).
Some other impressions without comments:
The cartoon style of the shader is cool (including the shattered left breast)! (Probably the helicopters look too smooth 3D to me in view of this shattered surface, which looks really cool.)
Now I believe that the dark side of the boxes disturbs the spacial view of the spectator (at the part of the transition of the right breast to the inside/ the back of the lady - a large area with no 3D effect). Perhaps a less fractalized random surface or a brighter color with light & shadows helping out the spacial impression?
Perhaps I also didn't like the blur of the transition of the foreground clouds layer to the box body :).

Generally I'd say: your idea with the shattered shapes has potential. But perhaps what gave the kick to your winner image was (together with the idea) the elegance of lines and curves.

I hope this can be some sort of help to you.

Lianad : clouds are partially photos and also some painted. In final the clouds will be photos and video footage.

Irratio: thanks for you crits and suggestions.

When I first saw this I thought someone had ripped off your theme/style because I had forgotton your forum name. I think it is great you are doing a series based on the boxes with city/grid textures. You can call it your city block period.

Have do you made a Max script to position all these boxes on the "lady hide surface" or do you positioned all boxes one by one with your hands?
