Does anybody use hotkeys for the playback controls in Maya?

I was looking around in the hotkey editor for the commands for play, stop, rewind, but didn't see them.

It would be nice to set the hotkeys to be something like CTRL-UP-ARROW for rewind to start, UP-ARROW for play/stop and LEFT-RIGHT-ARROW's for foward/backward frame advance.

The standard hotkeys in Maya for playback are not the best.

alt + v playback toggle
alt + V rewind
alt + . next frame
alt + , previous frame

But you can change these hotkeys in the hotkey editor under "Playback Controls".

Cool, thanks Audim. I was trying to get Maya to recognize the UP/LEFT/RIGHT arrow keys in the hotkey manager but it wasn't working. Maybe those are Maya reserved keys.

you can set the arrow keys as hotkeys.
that's what i use it for to jump frames.

in the text box where you enter the letter you want, there should be a little arrow on the right.
if you click on that you'll have a bunch of options there, like arrows, space, etc

hope that helps :)

I'm suggesting not to use arrow key as playback control hot keys.

Arrow keys by default is a hot keys for pickWalk direction.

Also with Alt+arrow keys you do camera panning as in Photoshop.

Also, I find this particularly helpful. Holding down 'k' and LMB-dragging the mouse left and right scrubs through the animation. Using the MMB lets you drag to a frame without updating the viewport.

Thanks Phearielord. I must be getting weary to have missed both of these things in the hotkey editor.

The hotkey assignment still leaves some things to be desired, such as holding keys (like a "repeat while keydown" function), as well as being able to assign the UP arrow to two functions as a playforward and playback toggle, but I suppose these issues are a minor inconveinence.

Snowfly, the k+MMB scrub is quite cool. I didn't know about that. I'm using dynamics quite a bit, so I'd have to cache to be able to use that a lot, but it is good to know none the less.

Misterdi, some good advice. I might be needing to change or reassign my hotkeys back at some point.

You can script your way out of the limitations you mention, though I can offer no practical examples. If you can get a melscript to switch between playforward and playback toggle, you can assign that script to the uparrow.

come to think of it I guess it's rather obvious that MEL scripting can solve it, as pretty much anything can be scripted. So uh.. yeah, sorry about the obviousness
