equinoxx in the hizouse too? Hoo-ha. This one's gonna get crazy, I can tell.
Looking cool, can tell there's a strain and he looks cheezed off.
iC4- it's a little guy tugging on a rope, who probably is in a lot of danger :)

if you mean the lil blue blobs in the lower left corner, that's a stylish character pulling the BoB [Beast of Burden] by his leash . . .
aaaaaaaaah, now I see it

That's really cool, I love the scale of the BoB versus the person trying to guide it. I like the fact that although the person is trying to guide it, that BoB could toss him accross town just by thoughtlessly looking around. I'm definitely going to be watching this thread. :)
Wow - cool start Equinoxx! :D
I really like the scale too... As long as you do us one render (or mebbe an anim) of the little guy bollocking the beast for misbehaving - and the beast eating/stomping him...
I dunno - it's the 2nd day in and I'm already asking for an anim... tsk!

Mmmmmhhh so the little chap is the real beast of burden. ;) Nice sketch, i like the way the big beast walks with his nuckles, as a gorilla.

I like what Pancreas just said about the little guy being the beast of burden--having the burden of managing the huge, semi-thoughtless creature!! If the little guy wasn't humanoid that would fit the rules and be an interesting challenge--hmmm--.....now I'm getting ideas...gotta go think about this!! Again, great concept art!:D

cool sketch 'noxx!
I like your BoB it looks like a cross between a gorrilla, an elephant, and an ox. Definetly all good traits to have if you're a beast of burden :D

It's about time you entered another challenge ya lazy skank!!!
Looking great so far! I love the tiny guy - but what on earth is such a tiny guy having to have transported by such a mammoth beast? :surprised
Also, you should give the lil guy some kind of weapon or something - because the size he is, tugging on that leash isn't going to make any difference - that huge beast isn't going to feel a thing :p
And I know I hate cruelty to animals, but give him a whip!

you are all too kind . . . i will start modeling tonight.
It is very well possible that the model willl have additional detail that's not in the concept, just see the concept as the general form of the BoB :D

Wow, that guy looks uberly pissed off. You should have it so the harness is breaking and whithered implying he is trying to escape from his captors, because that looks very easy for that fellow.

I really like the ape-like look of it - great design, and the curly horns are cool too!!
Maybe you should make those horns a little curlier though - like rams horns :)
Also, he looks like he'd probably be a little uncomfortable resting his body weight on the tips of his fingers - perhaps you should bend the fingers over like a gorilla...
Otherwise, KEEP GOING!! *cracks whip*

Just a little crit: It looks to me like the belly is too fat from the front view. I don't really see it as being that big in the sketch or in the other viewport angles just that front view. I guess if it's being styled after an ape it would have a large gut. It's just that right now in the low poly it doesn't seem to cohiesive throughout; maybe that'll change after the smoothing. And I'd definetly give him that thick stout tail he has in the sketch, that thing's awesome.
Just my 2 cents...

The BoB looks goregous smoothed out. I love the little swirls you added to the kneecaps. I thought of a name for this BoB:

Oh de big creature is the BoB....I thought the blue one....
Sorry, my mistake!
;)
Look'n good Equi!
Remark:
I also think that his head is too big.
Idea:
Let the Keeper pull a rope attached to the BoB's (HUGE) nipples!

I like the ape style of him.
His tail made me laugh, it reminds me of dogs that have their tails removed so they dont kill people by wagging them. Imaging if he/she/it had a long tail and was wagging it??
He would destroy cities... heheh
keep the tail a little nubbin.
Thats my favorite part

Excellent muscles! I can really sense how massive this creature is. The head is great it just needs more detail, also I suggest big bulging veins around the neck area and on his arms. I'm not liking the hands in their current state, try making the fingers a bit stubbier and give him nails sort of similar to the toe nails. Great work on the horns.
Equinoxx
07-13-2002, 02:18 PM
thx for the comments mate . . . tao, yeah maybe i'll do sommin with this one and grimmdar :)
as for the hands, that's what this update is all about, the idea is that, since it's a knucklewalker, evolution provided him with an extra pair of hoofs wher normaly his knuckles would scrape the ground . . . sorta extra support ;)
detail on the head is next thing on the list, then prolly try some veins :)

07-13-2002, 08:42 PM
Hey Equinoxxx, nice gorrilla bull!!!!:)
The extra hoof for knucklewalking is a great idea!!! I think they maybe should be a bit larger for more resistance. The same for the wrist, for knucklewalking this area is very important and have to be really strong and resistant, look at gorrillas, there wtist is almost as large as there arm.
Otherwise very nice job, cant wait to see more.... :applause:

07-13-2002, 09:57 PM
Hey 'noxx, nice update there man. I have a couple suggestions for you:
First I love the knuckle-hooves idea, but I'm not sure I like the implementation. Could you maybe try a version where the beast has pads like you have on it's knees on each of the knuckles? Kind of more like caluss rather than horns. That might tie the hands and legs together more (although the hooves do look simular on the knuckles and toes now).
I like the start of the pads you have under the eyes, but they might be a bit too close to the eyelids right now. I'd try moving them down onto the cheekbones, and maybe add them onto the brows as well.
Only other thing is what's with the ramp textures? :shame: hehehe just kidding with ya bro :D
Equinoxx
07-13-2002, 11:44 PM
Chad-d: thanx :)
Fedron: thx as well . . . i'll look into the matter of size . . . but the wrist is thick as it is, it's just that he has an overly developed forearm ;)
Martin: SHADDUP hehe :P
ZrO-1: I love how you crit . . . your suggestions are always worth consideration, however I kinda like these hoofthings, in my opinion, it looks weird, cause it's unusaul . . .
as for the ramptextures, don't mind em . . . they're just fun & games hehe

07-14-2002, 03:26 PM
commin' along fine. but the horns look weird, is it a bumpMap there or is that modeled? it dosen't fit with the rest of the character to have it so "bumpy".
and is that a big vein running through his upper arm or is it just temp? looks weird..
those stuff where the things that bothered _me_ the most, others might like them.
the "things" around the eyes are a really nice feature and the character got style, good!
hi equinoxx - are them plates for protection too? if so they might be a tad to thin - i mean: imagine youŽd be silly enough wanting to hurt this fella -> then youŽd for sure bring something really BIG along to achieve that! Well, just a thought...
Equinoxx
07-14-2002, 03:52 PM
Fellah: you were right i turned the bump on the horns down to a more 'normal' level . . .
as for the upperarm, that's no vein . . . that's just a Moxydaahs musclestructure ;)
Pit: the plates are mostly decarative and part of his harnass . . . as you say, you would be a fool to try and attack this beast ;)
Aearon
07-14-2002, 04:57 PM
great stuff there equinoxx
although i have to say i don't like the way you bent the horns, doesn't seem natural/believable as the horns of animals are generally follow a smooth curve (tell me if i'm wrong there, don't know exactly)
also the armor looks more like soft pads, as it's lacking detail at this point - if this look is not intended consider adding some trim around the pads
but there's another crit about the armor, it somehow feels "standard" because 'everyone' is going for this kind of armor look right now, at least i get this feeling
don't get me wrong though, it kinda fits your bob - but i'm damn sure you could think of something more original, maybe think about sketching those details too.
i LOVE your work though, and it's of course way beyond my skills, i hope you can still appreciate my little c&c, these are just the points that would make it perfect in my eyes

You're one of those guys that made me think twice about entering this comp. Nice Work!
MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better than your first attempt!
It's much more "Gangor-style" and you know how I think of Gangor!!!!
Maybe put tha Keepa in the Maxima's neck, instead of pulling some strings....
Like a little "box" with a couple of Keepa's in it.
I also like the new head, now it's more like a "pulling-animal", rather then a large-psycho-beast! A bit cow/bull/gorilla.
His armor is very classic, maybe find some other, more original armor...... like NO armor or something...
(he doesn't seem defenceless to me) :scream:
Oh yeah, the MOST important thing....GET A BETTER NAME FOR YOUR BOB!!!! (MORE GANGOR-STYLE!!!! :buttrock: )

07-14-2002, 10:29 PM
awesome buddy, one thing I notice (because I'm always thinking about animation) is the placement of the horns, when his neck rotates down, the horns would pass thru the mesh, you might want to rotate the horns forward more, other than that, you're doing an admirable job ;)
l_farley13_l
07-15-2002, 04:21 AM
Awesome sense of mass there! I agree with ZrO-1 - if your keeping the horns, maybe a bit wider and all filed down from the scraping would work - they just seem too "light" visually to be weight bearing. Hard to impliment to be sure (maybe move some of the muscles around to slide some mass down his arms?) His bones alone would be huge!
eh who knows, my $.02

Looking great Yves!!
The only thing that kinda bugs me is the shape of the horns - make the curve rounder, it's a bit too square...
The design of the armour is awesome! The only thing is that the buckle is the size of the person (well, almost :p), which makes me wonder how the people made them - maybe you should make the straps and stuff more human-sized?
Hehehehe it's funny cos the little guy looks like one of the little icons from msn LOL............
Equinoxx
07-15-2002, 08:34 AM
creative freedom . . . don't ya jsut love that expression
fist : For real, the issue about the horns [which bug a lot of you] is simple . . . The Moxydaah is obviously not of this world . . and due to that, his horns grow out of sync of earthlike horn-growing [is that even a word :surprised]
Furthermore, they are more cornerish even due to pushing with his horns.
as for the armor, it's not armor . . . it's indeed softpadding to prevent the straps from giving him rubburn . . . [the lil blue dudes are very kind to their BoBs since the BoB could easilly squash them if he's not pleased and they just look nifty :D
LilD : dun worry bout the horns passing thru the mesh . . . if you look carefully, you can see that if he bends his head, the horns will pass precicely in front of his shouldermuscle :)
Nibo : I know, gangor OWNZ hehe
Jaymo : you thought twice, good, now ENTER . . . this is a fun challenge, and i for one don't want to scare people away
Farley : i wanted to make em bigger, but then i could fit them nowhere on his head . . . form over function i guess
Leigh : for the hornthing, read higher
as for the straps and buckles, the 'human'sizes wouldn't work, to small and weak. Besides, people DO still wonder how people made the pyramides . . . 'humans' are capable of building large :D
thx for the crits all . . . I really appreciate that . ..
Maybe it's been asked before, but...
Just curious to know you such a little guy could control such a massive beast..... keeping it docile through diet maybe? Got strings around his bullocks?

hm . . . good question . . . i'll have to think of sommin . . . perhaps a lildude in a hammock beneath the BoB, ticklin his bollocks ROFL no really, you brought up a good issue here . . . will need to think it thru . . .
LMAO... what a crappy job...
"How was your day honey?"
"I got stuck on 'Bullock duty'."
"Ooooo, sorry to hear it, dear."
"Ya, it was awful... I tickled the big bastard's bullocks, and he nearly collapsed on me."
great ! i was waiting for your modelling to go further before commenting, now i think it's time, it looks really good, i like the proportions, the only crit i would make : i would prefer the back to be more round shaped (but in the inside, not really clear am i ?).
I mean i'd prefer the down part of the back to be more curved in the inside, then the torso would look stronger (more like a gorilla).
of course it's your model and you decide ! Just a thought. :-)
well done.

What would the job description be?... What experience would you need to be a 'Master Bollock Shocker'?.... Do they have a 'Bollock Shocking Schools'? What kind of person would do such a job?
These questions, and others, are the things you have to ask yourself when designing a 'Beast of Burden' for CGTalk challenges.

skills needed for Bollock Shockin:
at LEAST a steady hand, you need to know where to shock exactly [don't want to render The Moxydaah infurtile ;)
courage [bollocks tend to sway at random speed when shocked]
the kind of person that wants to become Master Bollock Shocker ??
damned if I know . . . prolly the ones that have done sommin wrong. Think of Bollock shockin as 'community service' hehe
as you say, one gets stuck on Bollock Shockin Duty
Job desciption ? Shock The Bollocks when The Moxydaah strays from it's designated course :D
LoL... nasty....
And for the record Equinoxx, I do like the design, I like JT's suggestion of a more gorilla-like stance/shape...
:)

i know what ya mean and it's allready there . . . a large tummy huh . . . i guess it just doesn't show in these renders . . .
i'm in the process of rigging hom and once that's done, i'll show some multipleview renders :)

WHO is the BoB now huh
it's obviously a badly rigged character at the mo, hence some weird creases and odd bend on bodyparts, but i just HAD to do this :D
I will continue the rigging process and try to perfect it ;)

Holy CRAP!!!! 'noxx that looks absolutely awesome. I wish I had half of your rigging skills. You should see the stretched & pinched mess my cowboy has turned into :p
Great work so far! I can't wait to see what possible refinements you do to it.
Just a question that comes in mind: Is there little basket attachet to bollocks where bollock shoker works?
Awesome model i have to say, awesome in deed:thumbsup:

Everything looks great! Except maybe for the bump on those toenails... not sure about that.
Apart from that, gobsmacking goodness!:D

damn EQ, looking really nice. My crits are the same as above. (mentioned skinning, and the toenails)

what can i say . . . you guys are right concerning the bump on the toenails, it's DEF overdone :p
i will change that.
as for rigging, it's the most un-intuitive process of cg imo . . .
i hate it, but i WILL control it :D

What are you using to RIG, physique or Skin?
Equinoxx

physique . . . which IS quite nice, but still a pain to finetune

I hear that. I find myself gravitating back toward skin at times. The simplicity (other than envelopin) makes it refreshing. :)

'noxx, not to be a retard about this but if you make the little man the beast of burden aren't you then coming into conflict with rule # 5?

hehe well, basically, it's not human is it :surprised
i mean I for one never saw a human without a neck and his head floating above his torso ;)
but Tao is right, it's just a joke, the Big Beast is the BoB :)

Really cool stuff over here !
My only critics would go toward the armor : I don't like like the way it looks, it follows to much the body's curves.
Except that, top notch ! :applause:
