View Full Version : Dragon Slaying Girl
jeroentje 07-04-2002, 09:07 PM Oh man... at last she is finished! :insane:
It's my first painting with a (real) fantasy theme, and I've been switching between working on her and reading "The fellowship of the ring" for the last 2 days.
Cheers, jeroentje

Nice work, wish she were facing the viewer with her body. I think you need to work on the detail of the leather armor, it's not solid enough.

Nice work jeroentje!!
Personally, I like the pose you've got ... not a lot of people can use a dead on side or dead on front effectively, but the head tilt helps you pull it off nicely ...
But I have to agree with the armour detail ... also, I'd love to see self-trace lines on the armour lineart ....
Other than that ... good work, man ...

He, thanks for your nice and fast replies guys
I really meant that thing under the iron armour as a piece of cloth (tartan infact). But a piece of leather makes much more sense indeed.
Like I said, fantasy and mediaeval stuff is sort of an unwalked path to me...
jeroentje
(al_choi, what do you mean with "self-trace lines on the armour lineart"? Love to know but don't don't know how to translate  )

Oh yeah ... that's a thing I picked up in the 2D industry ...
Self_trace lines means the same colour outline as the paint layer, only darker ... or different hue ...
So if you have a light blue paint layer ... your outline layer would be navy blue .... that kind of thing ...
Disney does this quite a bit ....
Check out Hercules ... they use this technique a lot to great effect ...
I thought if you isolate this effect to just her costume, might give it that surreal, angelic kind of effect ....
I don't know ... give it a shot ... I think it might look cool ...
Cheers

Oh colored outlines you mean.
I'll keep it in mind for later, no time to work on her, packing my bags now...
jeroentje
and thanks for all the good words again :)

...and here's the little story behind it that I thought up while painting her (btw, all PS6.0 with the airbrush tool, except the stones, thats the brush).
She's a little dragon slayer (no offence Little Dragon ;) ) who saw her sword fall of a cliff when fighting a big ugly dragon (yeah, she's a blonde...). Then the whole King Arthur story kicks in. To complete it; the sword will kill her in the end. (Came up with that last thing after putting my sign up, when I noticed the sword needed a reflection in the eye and it came out this way).
Designed the whole thing so it could be a book cover. That's my graphic design thing coming around the corner.
jeroentje
(btw, I have also been thinking about making the shield a VW huffcap. But the painting is just too nice to pull some of my stupid jokes with it, and it would look a bit to advertising)

Very nice work Jeroentje!!!
I think you are doing a great job allthough this is your first "fantasy" painting!!! I love the pos and the dragon on the back is a cool detail, her hair looks a bit unreal compared to the rest...
Have a nice holiday!!!

Thanks Gkoko :)
You have a point about the hair Sangotten, could be a bit more transparant in the ends and with some gaps in between.
That "light from the back" I saw in some of your earlier postings and I thought it was such a good thing to do. Only thing is I always want lightsources to make sense. This one isn't.(Where the hell is it coming from??? From a big softbox if it was a photograph haha ...) but it looks good and makes the girl loose from the background and adds some depht this way.

I like it, i think some parts are painted a bit to "toonish"..like the ripped cloth at her arm....the face and proportions are so well drawn that they give a realistic feel, maybe bring the clothes up to meet it...just a thought. nice work.

Rob3D31, I'm storing all your comments in the back of my head for next week ;)
btw, do you know it's blesphemish to show pictures of God? Specially in an avatar?
Thanks apaparone, ehm... the dragon is in the back, turn the light of your monitor a bit up :lightbulb
jeroentje
the thumb of the right hand needs a second joint. it looks a bit crippled - on the other hand it is a nice effect on her overall look.
i like the face.:wavey:

on second thought ...
Forget it ... the whole self-trace lines look ...
I like it the way it is ...
Maybe .... how about darkening the rust effect on the shield the closer it gets to the line work ...so it sort of bleeds into the creases ....
But your packing now eh?
Hope the move goes well ....
As always ... love your stuff ...
The only reason I nitpick is because I'm a fan of your stuff ...
Cheers,
Al.

zooming in...
The leather is just for avoiding the metal to cut her skin ;)
Also made some scratches on the metal armour, thought that would make some sense...

The theeth that hair band is made of, belonged to "Xena the Warrior Princess", before my Dragon Girl kicked them out ;)

very very well done!!!!!!
I especially like the highlights on her backside and on the belt,
and her lips quite a lot.
I don't like the shadow under her right hand and the tiny shield, but that's just me.

Thanks man.
The shield is this size, because it's only for basic defence. If I would make it any bigger, it would be too heavy to be usefull (it's made of metal). The big man-size shields I found on the web where all made of wood, and I wanted her to splash of the screen. I also wanted her to be an active solitair warrior. I thought the big ones where for group-defence.
jeroentje
edit - and to be honest, a big one would cover her butt ;)
