View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character - fellah
fellah 07-04-2002, 08:26 PM hi,
I would like to start with thanks to all the mods who's taking their spare time to make these challenges possible, you ppl are great!
over to my contribution, made this concept today after reading the guidelines.
I can still see alot of stuff on the sketch that looks weird and which I could improve, but I'm not going in to make this a 2D challenge for myself ;)
story:
when the earth was born the gods used these beasts as slaves to build the world, that's it :)
http://starlight.wox.org/~fellah/BoB/BoBConcept.jpg
I'm gonna make him a really detailed and muscular beast in 3D with alot more details then you can see in the sketch,
I'm really going in this one to _challenge_ myself.
take care

damn thats what I call a sketch, really great :)
but wouldn't he has problems to run?

nice to see you back!....looks cool so far.
:bounce: Crank it out in record time! :bounce:

I dig him!
At first glance he looks like he would just fall over since all his weight is so far forward. However his weight is almost like a counterbalance for the cargo he would be pulling. Like he couldn't move or stand unless he was pulling something. Very clever!!

fellah
07-04-2002, 09:50 PM
IC4-: yes he would :) he's not supposed to though as he's more of a slow\strong little fella.
skello: hey there skello, nice to see you again! I probably won't go for a record this time though ;)
My Fault: wow, I didn't think anyone should notice that, I actually had that in mind when I drew him, you're very cleaver! :)

Kind of reminds me of those sketches that were in the Ian Livingstone books (was it Ian livingstone? I can't remember). you know, the fighting fantasy books?
Good design. The 3d should look amazing if your other work is anything to go by!
Really nice to meet u in this challenge.......now im sure....it will be a great one with ur presence!:bounce:

I can say right now Fellah...........................You are a real contender already with that excellent concept/sketch.........Great girth to that beast, I like it very much, go for it with all you can and this will be one great entry, looking forward to more.................This looks very promising........ :)
fellah
07-05-2002, 10:30 AM
holy bandoli, I just woke up and saw 40-50 new entries, this one is gonna be big!!
erilaz: I actually don't know who he is, but I'm gonna look it up. I actually got my inspiration to the first concept from a fish which I mixed with a camel ;)
OZ: thanks, glad to see you, and good luck in the challenge!
Clockwork: thank, it's gonna be better ;)
Virtuoso: I'll do my best, thanks! :)
I couldn't sleep last night so drew another concept:
http://starlight.wox.org/~fellah/BoB/BoBConcept2.jpg
which one should I model(first ;) )???
stipen
07-05-2002, 11:05 AM
Hey fellah !!!
I prefere the second!! I can't wait to see it modelled 1!!!:bounce: :bounce:

07-05-2002, 11:07 AM
me too,I can't wait to see it animated!!! (3)
skello
07-05-2002, 12:24 PM
Yeah i like this one better too.... try and give it the hunched and straining look of the first one. :wip:
fellah
07-05-2002, 04:40 PM
thanks skello, stipen and, err.. nanoneen, I'll get back to you ;)
I gave the second concept guy a try but it didn't feel like a real challenge, it feelt like I should be able to finish it in 1 or 2 days and I wanted to do something really complex and detailed this time so I started with the first one instead..
nanoneen: lol! :D I actually believe I know where that line you've used a couple of times is "ctrl+c'ed" from ;)
btw, if anyone wan't to model that last concept, just PM me. if not, I'll model it after I've finished the first beast.
fellah
07-06-2002, 02:04 AM
ouch, 4am... well, I can't model on this piece tomorrow as I have 2 other projects I have to finish soon so I thought I'd post my progress so far.
try to not pay to much attention to the very poor and quick lines, they are just there to show you where it's heading.. and, my mouse is really poor ;)
http://starlight.wox.org/~fellah/BoB/3D_RoughPaintover1.jpg
in the end there will be _much_ more chains and trinkets covering him, even more then it's shown on the concept.

07-06-2002, 06:52 AM
Looking good.
I reckon he looks a bit unbalanced still. You should attach chains to him up the top, thatd look like hes being held up more.
nice start, iam really hurry to see him finish with all the detail that you say ,well good luck ,i keep an eye on this thread ..........wouuuu hoooou:bounce:

pearson: thanks! I really liked your "ForestRobot" in the last challenge, he has alot of character, I hope you don't throw that away without making something cool with him.
OZ: thanks for all the glory :) I'll dig for some renders of the PirateTurtle tomorrow and post the link here.

little update for the body, still ALOT of tweaking to be made. I'll add more muscles, veins etc.. and then it's time for all the accessories. gonna try to make this model one of my most complex ones.

skello: stop model that other model and join in instead!! :)

This is comming to be really nice. The wireframe disposition is pretty good for animation. He looks powerfull, Maybe at the end a powerfull posture of him lowered down pulling some heavy objet would be super nice.
Keep up the good work!
fellah
07-08-2002, 09:26 PM
thank you all for the positive feedback
ZrO- 1: hehe, I saw that to! :bounce: I was the happiest man on earth when I saw it, but it was only 1hour of fame it seams ;)
Marc: yea he will be pulling a BIG rock in the end. I will experiment alot with facialExpressions and poses when the model is done. I might even make a little animation of him pulling the big stone.

Better and better.................You just could see from the beginning that this one was one of the elite ones among many very nice concepts here thus far..............But now you have taken it up another notch. Nasty and very highly defined creature, but sooooooooooo beautiful in a strange way. With more details as you promised this one will be extra fun to look at.
Plus Fellah.................Your avatar is extremly cooooool, I would love to see him on that beast, or being eaten by it....;)
Very nice work, looking forward to more when you get it done.........

Virtuoso:wow, thanks alot! I might do something with my avatar and this beast. but not for the challenge as I ain't allowed to use objects made before the challenge..
but as I said, there's still like 25das left so I'll probably spit out an animation or 2 and show here, and my avatarGuy might be featured ;)
Icecube: thanks! sent you a mail.

Man that's a great looking beast, and such a clean mesh, I know you guys are pretty closed lips about your models, but I would love to hear some of your modeling techniques someday.. I can only aspire!
fellah
07-12-2002, 11:35 PM
BrainFaucet: thanks :wip:
Clockwork: I usually model poly by poly and tries to get a nice "flow" of them so that they follow the muscles\shape.
I usually start with the dense areas(mostly the eyes) and extend from there.
there are alot of tutorials about this technique on the web, I might dig some up for you in the future if you wan't me to.
I'm about 20% done with the accessories . I will give him an egyptian style, alot of jewelry and stuff.

And now this Beast'ds master..................Spectacular idea, it is soooooooooo anti everything of what that gigantic beast is and contrasts perfectly. Brilliant, just get to it fellah, I am anxious to see more................Great job. :)

My Fault: thanks, I'm glad you're following the thread!
ZrO-1thanks, I didn't think about that "non shalant" look myself, but you're right.
Virtuoso: wow, thanks alot! really glad you like everything !
skello: maybe she will be ;)
riki: thanks! I don't know if I'll add "t-rex arms" though.. It might give the beast a to much "dino" look, but you never know..
hypercube"boo"? :)
about the burden, I've actually tought about a "toychest" myself. but it seems to be the most obvious choice so it might be better to have something else.
the catapult you mentioned to play "catch\fetch" is a good idea. I'm gonna have me a thinker about the burden.. thanks for the input!

That girl is really good. I almost like her character better than the BoB!
As for a burden, if the master is going to be a sweet little girl, why not make it something insanely cute, like her bed, or something disturbing, like a heap of severed Barbie-doll limbs.
How about a gigantic bowl of porridge?:D
very nice beast and the idea with the lil girl is wonderful
I have a lil question, do you model the chains by hand? I mean create one chain part...rotate it...move it.......or have you made this with an other method?
nice thought about the gril~It's remind me the beauty and the beat!very dramatic~
Check of my Beast of Burden (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12984&pagenumber=1)
fellah
07-14-2002, 03:32 PM
erilaz:thanks, a bed is a really nice thing to have as a burden for this beast! might be what I was looking for :)
iC4-: I modeled them the way you described.. it was done really quick but it might be better to use a more "dynamic" approach and let the software calculate how the chains should fall.. at least if you want to animate it(which I wan't)
I might have to change that later.. thanks!
Rex: thanks, didn't think about that but you're right.
Nice Bob Fellah ! The little girl should add a lot of contrast to the scene, well done.
Nice horns by the way, viking inspiration ? (or maybe inconscious ;-) )

07-14-2002, 07:24 PM
thanks -JT-, I'm glad most of you like the "cuteGirl master" idea. and about he horns, inconscious :)

hypercube: hihi, you're right, I had that girl("Boo") from "monsters inc" in my mind when I was drawing, but I haven't seen the movie.. only the commercials and trailers  but I will see it, soon!
I'll try to give the little girl that "Boo" feeling over the model, 'cause I think it's really cute!

next update will probably be on the girl

Great model!
The cute girl pieces up the cake, I'll keep an eye on this to see her going 3D. I also think that her bed is a good idea for the burden. Maybe the "pet" house too... anyway, excellet job so far.

07-19-2002, 10:36 AM
thanks danko! I think I'll go with the bed as the burden, or a toyChest.. but it's leaning more towards the bed right now.

As I have said before...................I love the whole thing, the Bob, the girl, the whole feel, the original style as well is very nice.
The only thing I can crit on is..................And this is just one guys opinion, nothing wrong with your creations but...........The girl seems a bit sad, I think maybe a little more cheerful. Unless she is in fear of the BOB???..............If not I think a more cheerful expression would be nice as a contrast for the whole scene, tiny cute little girl with tough gigantic beast being controlled by her..................
Bottomline.................Top notch work Fellah..... :)

As I said before.....................Pure in-depth creations with great flare and totally fun to look at. Clean and smooth looking too. I just love the contrast of the beasts mighty intense size and strength compared to it's master the little but very cute girl.
The only small crit would be the point Marc made about the lower body should shape more to connect with the legs............Just a minor tweak there and I believe you have a perfect creation.
Go finish it Fellah, I am anxious to see it done in it's full glory............

Real nice. Iīve always liked the softness of your renders, such a nice style.
Now when I take a closer look at your piece of work. Does it remind me of a childrens story. The embarassing thing is I canīt remember the name of it. But itīs quite famous. Itīs about a boy that from his bedroom enters a wood with giant beasts. Your piece has the same sense of scale.
Kommer hålla utkik i WIP sektionen!

stipen: thanks again, you're to kind
ila_solomon: :D
Mikael P: you don't mean "the land of narnia"? it's about a boy(and maybe his sister if I remember correct) that can walk through their closet and enter a fantasyLand where a nasty witch is turning "everyone" to stone. and there is also a kind lion that's on the good side.
really fantastic story! I saw it when I was a kid and have searched for it for some time, but with no success..
hiko_: thanks a bounch! :bounce: :)

hey is that series by CS Lewis, "THE Chronicles of Narnia"?
fellah

tubby: yes, I think it's based on his book "the lion the witch and the wardrobe".
I've seen the "cartoon version" and the "real" version. but I must say I prefered the cartoony one.

Nope. Narnia doesnīt have any beast the size of yours.
I am on my way of digging up the name. Soon hopefully.

There, now I got it.

Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak.
Itīs not so much the look, rather the feel and size between the characters that I was getting at.

Mikael P: thanks alot for digging it up, I haven't heard\seen it before, but the story sounds really interesting. I'll look it up more closely, thanks!
Maxko: np, I don't care as long as you don't copy _the look_of my girl :)
levius: sorry  I just didn't wanna submit a nonFinished piece for the challenge..
and in fact, I don't care much for the voting. I have nothing to win there anyway, it's _during_ the challenge you win.. thanks though!
ZrO- 1: thanks a bounce! :bounce: it means alot to me

Fellah you already know what I think............TOP notch work. Just in every aspect, fun factor, in-depth details, clean modeling, originality, I love it. It is one of the best, one of my fav's. I will keep an eye out for it in the WIP section. It still gets 5 stars from me here....................Great job Fellah.:applause:  :)

thanks alot once again virtuoso, for following this thread from the beginning and for giving me the strength to keep going! I hope to see you in the next challenge :)
Congratz on this fine piece - and i like your attitude towards the voting aspect. (Asger Jorn (danish painter) once said that art ainīt a sport as he turned down a heavily donated art prize - and he was starving at that point! I see the same thoughts revieled here. The learning part is what really can be gained. Ok, nuf said - really just wanted to say that i think u created a piece with loads of personality and charm - look forward to those big plans! Mycka bra - itīs the only positive swedish phrase i know so u might wanna replace bra with the equivalent word for brilliant or kick ass!

Wow Fellah, you've got some major talent up your sleeves, and a bit more tucked under your hat! I love the little girl. So cute and simple.
I agree with Pit! Good philosophy on the challenge. Learning is a really important part!!:D
