This image is mainly made for testing some new techniques i developed for faster rendering of this type of scene in a practical example.
This is my first message in this forum and i am quite aware that both the style of the image as well as the techniques and software i use (POV-Ray) are not very common here. Feel free to criticise or ask for further info. Any comment would be welcome.
Rendered with POV-Ray 3.6 beta w. custom extensions.

hey chho, nice work!
my only crit ic goes for the sunlight, it is too bright (IMO)
the plants are really well made too.
you said you made it in order to test techniques for faster rendering but you didn't said how much time it took to get done though....how much time?

Thanks for the comments, the light intesity is surely a matter of taste but when you imagine taking a photograph of such a scenery and you don't want the shadows to be completely black the sunlit parts will surely be quite bright as well. The dynamic range in such a scene is quite high.

Well, this image is a scaled down version of a larger render (6400x4800) that took about 200 hours. That surely sounds like a lot but rendering just the small image would only take about 5 hours with the same settings. Add some more time for antialiasing and you have a reasonable guess. ;)

There are no photographic elements in this scene at all. I should also add that all geometry except the plants is procedural. This helps keeping memory use low (200 Mb, mostly for the illumination data). Here is a detail from the image to give an idea how it looks in large:

very interesting. i am also a big fan of procedural textures because of this fact that they look good from a distance, and good in a CU. Flickering has been a problem in animations though. Something tells me you would have this problem too... oh wait, it would not be very practical to animate with this scene at 5 hours a frame, my bad.

First of all.. Great image, I think the amount of light is just right. :beer:
About procedural textures. I know that I'm still a n00b :blush: . But i dont get what this is. I tried to search on google, and i found some stuff saying that you can use procedural textures to conserve RAM in games :cool: But can you guys tell me how it works and when it should be used :surprised

Hey this is unique. At first I thought the lights were to bright then I considered the rest of the image as it downloaded. Now I think they are just right. Only thing that makes me wonder is the water. It's brown and murky close to the camera even if the sun hits it, yet in the distance the water is blue. But, I will say the dark water gives this area inside the pillars a dark dangerous mystique that not even the sun can break. So who knows.

procedural textures are textures defined by an algorithm rather than an image file. This has the advantage of not using much memory and it makes 3d solid texturing possible.

Absolutly amazing. The level of detail is incredible.
Only critique would be that it seems like you are having some anti-aliasing issues.
Could you post a full sized image or anything with a higher res?

extremely cool concept. great image. i would love to see some kind of activity going on under the water as well - ruins or something maybe?

The full size render is without antialiasing of course but this does not change much about the scaled version. The scaling is relatively crisp to preserve structures but i had a look at it on an LCD monitor and a smoother version looks much better there.
