View Full Version : RTS Building
h0pesfall 03-09-2004, 11:13 AM An armory for a viking Warcraft III total-conversion. Took about 25 minutes. It was requested by a friend. I'm also supposed to skin it. I'll post updates when they're ready. It's 195 faces, but I still have to add some geometry for construction animation phases, which will probably bring it up to ~300 faces.

Looks pretty cool to me. I'd scale that anvil down a tad, and if the anvil is going to be outside, the smithy's going to need a forge to heat his metal up with nearby. I think the anvil might be ok, not sure exactly what the scale of the person is. It also looks like you've got a couple of extra faces on one side of the anvil that could go.
On a low geometry model like this, it's made or broken by the textures.

The anvil outside is just an old/used one to add to the look. The real one, and the oven, are of course, inside (if you use your imagination, no need to model them since you'll never see the inside of the building). I'll see what i'll do about it's polycount, altho i'm still below my budget by alot, and the guy who requested this mentioned the anvil not being detailed enough which is why I redid it. I might just use a 6-face cone instead of an 8-face for the rounded side, but that would only bring me 2 faces lower. But I guess 2 faces is 2 faces.
Thanks for the crits and comments. Keep em coming people. I'd like to have some about the general design. By the way, the plane under the sign is going to be used for hanging equipment, the rounds are shields (obviously) and the rectangles on the right side are going to be swords, while the rectangle behind em a rack. As you can see I am going to use the opacity map quite much. The roof is going to be straw, the sides will be alpha'd out accordingly so it looks like straw hanging from the sides. Anyways... you'll all get a better idea once the texture is there.

On the anvil, I think the round side is fine, It's the other side that looks like there are a couple of tris that would not be missed.
I like the design aspect you've got going on here. Love the way you've got the sheilds an swords placed about. I thought at first that the hanging equipment idea was great, but now I'm not sure how realistic that would be. Most equipment he would be making/using would not be something that would easily hang on a rope/cable. Racks seem like the best Idea. (I could be wrong though).
If you need to find more places to put polys, you might round out slope of the roof near the edge seeing as you are going to make it straw, and straw would have a softer profile.
Just some more thoughts!

Nice suggestions, thanks. About the triangle on the other side of the anvil, it's there to make the tip flat instead of triangled. It might not be necessary tho.
