otacon 07-04-2002, 07:05 PM Alright. Its my first challenge, so I hope I can at least finish it. Heres my idea for a character. Im still working on the head and arms, so if you have any suggestions on how they should look, or any other part of the model, im open for suggestions.;)

UPDATE...:wip: hmmmm...no replies yet:cry: ...o well, i guess theres not much to crit....yet.:D Started working on the arms, probably gonna make the legs bigger, they look very small compared to the arms. Im still open for suggestions.:bounce:

looks quite good now. I love those feet. Maybe you use something similar for the hands, like irregular/deformed fingers, giving it more the look of a wild beast.
Keep the good work :)
otacon
07-05-2002, 12:40 AM
Thanks. The hands are definately gonna be something irregular.:insane:

Head in progress....:wip:
otacon
07-06-2002, 03:43 AM
Put on the arms.....Im not really liking the legs, so ill probably change them some....Im trying to get an idea together for the contraption. Ill try working the details later for this guy. Still gotta finish the head too.
Some more replies would be nice....its getting lonely in here.

07-06-2002, 08:58 PM
Small update. Im not a really fast modeler like some in here. I worked a little more on the head, and removed those spiney things on his back. Still gotta work out the details...but hey....i got a month so im takin my time.:D
otacon
07-06-2002, 09:02 PM
Heres a small sketch i put together just to give an idea of what im going for......I still could use some replies btw:surprised .....I guess no one likes my idea:shrug: .....anything would be nice....even harsh criticism.
otacon
07-06-2002, 09:05 PM
forgot the pic....
yeah ,i think its a good idea ,and the face is going good but they need some more refinement ,especially for the eye
otacon
07-06-2002, 09:33 PM
Thanks for the reply Gabe. Ill definately work on the face some more.

07-06-2002, 09:44 PM
Oh, just found this thread....so darn many to read :surprised
I like the sketch that's pretty cool. Your model is coming along great. I think overall the proportions look good. The back legs don't seem too smal from my POV. It's lacking in detail, but like you said, we have a month that's plenty of time to add that kinds stuff in.
The early bird may catch the worm, but that doesn't mean the early worm is any good to eat. ;)
otacon
07-06-2002, 09:50 PM
Very true. SOOOOOOOOOOOO many threads to read. Like I said, detail will come into play a little later on down the road, and im gonna try to have plenty of detail, since this is a modeling challenge. Thx for the reply btw, it is hard to read em all.:D
otacon
07-07-2002, 02:41 AM
I finished the bulk of the beast, and now im gonna have to concentrate on details before i begin making the contraption. Heres what i got so far.:wip:
otacon
07-07-2002, 05:23 AM
:lightbulb I thought up this idea just as i was about to fall asleep, so i had to get up and do a quick sketch before i forgot.:insane:

Hey that's not a bad idea! Have them play tug-of-war as a spectator sport for their owners. Very cool.

pose........
otacon
07-08-2002, 06:30 PM
Heres a pose of the two beasts with the harness thing drawn in. I still dont know about the contraption, its kind of plain. I might try working on a few and see what works.
otacon
07-09-2002, 01:21 AM
Did a little more work(not much though:D ) on this guy. Started on the harness, but im still trying to think up a good idea for the contraption. Any ideas, suggestions......? Havent heard a peep out of anyone for a while now.
ZrO-1
07-09-2002, 01:33 AM
Maybe instead of just a ring suspended in the middle you could have some heavy platform type thing with the cables coming from the beasts attached to a sort of spring device. It could be some sort of a judges platform for the pulling contest. It could be suspended in the air by the tension in the cables attaching the beasts.
otacon
07-09-2002, 09:05 PM
I stared some work on a contraption. I might just trash that whole tug-of-war deal. This beast is gonna have to work...he has to hold the front of the contraption stable with his neck, and there will be rods connected to the back that he will hold up with his hands. im not sure yet about what to put in the crate...maybe some big stones.....? :wip:

is it really THAT bad? I cant fix it without comments people.:annoyed:

07-11-2002, 02:41 AM
hey that looks cool so far! things i would suggest to change:
i don't like the hands or fingers-the seem to be really flat to me.
and the part above the knee( i don't know how its called:() needs more muscles for sure.
and i asked myself why you always add this grain effect to your pics-or is it just the bad compression?
btw the contraptipon and how it is attached to the BoB rocks!!:buttrock:
i really like how the BoB is posing.
otacon
07-11-2002, 03:03 AM
Thanks! Ill fix the hands...i dont really like them that much either. As far as the thigh (the part above the knee) goes, ill work on the muscles and make them more visible. The grain was just something i was messing with, but ill stop putting that in.;)

Small update on the contraption......

looks good! I like the overall balance, that burden really seems HEAVY. you should try refercing more muscles. try http://www.fineart.sk/

Great, really coming along nicely..very cool burden design too.
I'll second the call for more muscles and detail..also not sure if you're going to do this in rigging or are modeling in place, but needs more strain, right now don't get a sense he's carrying it, seems to be resting lightly on his hands..he looks very downtrodden, but should have a monster grip and his arms about ready to explode, and legs collapse.
otacon
07-12-2002, 12:10 AM
Thanks for the comments!:D Ill take a look at that link and see what i can do. I was planning on rigging him, so ill be sure to make him seem more weak and tired.

07-12-2002, 12:18 AM
great model and idea but i think the hands should be bigger and have longer fingers almost amphibian like (mind the spelling)
but other than that great
Clockwork
07-12-2002, 12:23 AM
I think it's great, I just think that unless that creature is made out of something with ten times the weight of gold, it would just topple over backwards - Just plain physics.
otacon
07-12-2002, 09:35 PM
Thanks for the replies.:) Lets just say he weighs a lot......but that budon is still really hard to carry.;) I tried making some better muscle definition, and worked on the hands a little bit. I still need to make some more details and insignias for him. I got a render here that I used GI on........c&c always appreciated.
derwolpertinger
07-12-2002, 10:17 PM
getting better now! but unfortunately i can't see much of the refined hands. but i think they look better, thicker now. another thing that you could still improve are the arms and the muscles in general. especially the arms need a bit of work. the muscles look all the same a bit like waves from this perspective. maybe you should add-as you said- more fetails. but also try to model it with more "contrast". what i mean is that you should add some smaller muscles and some harder and some softer edges. just make it look more different overall.
i hope you could understand what i tried to explain.:D
if not just tell me!
otacon
07-12-2002, 11:45 PM
I think I know what you mean. I havent started on the hands yet, but im going to fix those up soon. Ill try to make more muscles too.
otacon
07-14-2002, 12:43 AM
no updates yet. I thought id take a small break from this guy for a while.:surprised But here's another angle...just to push my thread up a little.:D
rickycox
07-14-2002, 03:09 AM
hehe great work, from the front on view I can tell this guy is straining to dump his load :-)
ZrO-1
07-14-2002, 03:18 AM
I see nothing wrong with the set-up you have. One suggestion I'd make is to show a lot of stress and strain on the BoBs face and neck since his head is keeping the cart from tipping back.
otacon
07-14-2002, 05:46 PM
hahahah. It does look like that now that you said that. yea....ZrO-1, i was planning on waiting a ittle longer until i put him in a pose. This is just his defalt position right now. But I'll be sure to make his head look really strained.:D As always thanks for the comments.

07-15-2002, 02:04 AM
 cool, maybe he'll be gritting his teeth and sweating with viens popping out!!

this is for rikis comment...funny funny funny:D :surprised

07-15-2002, 11:47 PM
I claim im taking a break from this guy, but i keep supplying the renders. :argh: :insane:
Bezerker75
07-16-2002, 12:28 AM
also maybe consider making his thighs a bitmore muscular and maybe somewhat larger...since he is kinda in a squat position...and if you ever have done squats you know the strain on you thighs!
otacon
07-20-2002, 07:10 PM
Heres a little test environment i did. I still need to work on more details for the beast, its just hard to come up with new/original stuff. And i got tired of working on him, so i thought i might as well try out an environment. If anyone has any ideas or comments feel free to post.:D
otacon
07-21-2002, 02:37 AM
heres another view....replies anyone?:D

That's a really awesome environment design. I really like that last pic you posted.

:applause: nice job with the blizzard effect how did make that enviroment, it looks great, whenever i try to make snow it turns out pretty bad...:annoyed:
otacon
07-22-2002, 12:52 AM
Thanks Lukashi. I just made a ground plane, colored it white and added a standard sky tracer sky in lihgtwave. I then added the snow in paint shop. It might look good also because its rendered with GI.;)
YoGoLo
07-22-2002, 07:32 PM
i agree ZrO-1, the 2d pic is great !
If I can give my opinion I think that the burden is to... clear
I want to say that the beast is wearing old and tired clothes but the burden is perfectly symetric with regular angles.
I think that it could be better if you add chaos into it :)
just an opinion ;)
otacon
07-22-2002, 07:49 PM
Thats just the opinon i needed. I knew the burden needed something.....i just couldnt figure out what. Thanks a lot, ill work on it.:D

and a front snowy view...
otacon
07-24-2002, 05:05 PM
Heres a view of the whole thing w/GI and all. I took the metal textures off the bars and chains, since no textures are allowed in the final one anyway.....and i think it looks better this way. So....how is it?:D
otacon
07-24-2002, 05:07 PM
;)
erilaz
07-24-2002, 09:47 PM
Lookin' good.
Hey, textures are allowed, they're just not judged! (Or have the rules changed since I read them?), so you might as well keep them on there!
I like the blizzardy look. Nice concept. :D
ZrO-1
07-24-2002, 10:01 PM
good stuff otacon! I like the new additions. I'd add in even more little things like that.
Keep it up bro, it's looking awesome!

07-25-2002, 01:00 AM
Thanks guys. ill try thinking up some more details.:wip: :lightbulb

poor beasty, u mean mean person :p besides me feelin sorry for it, it looks really good :bounce:
Lukashi
07-25-2002, 09:56 PM
one more think, try to make him look more like he is walking instead of just standing there
otacon
07-25-2002, 10:25 PM
Im gonna put him in a pose when i get done with all the details.:D
YoGoLo
07-25-2002, 11:35 PM
when I talk about chaos I wanted to mean that U should break the symetrical aspect of the burden..
for example the barrels are all straights...
blend, squeeze, tapper, noise... it could be useful =)
idem for the structure...
one angle break, not symetrical, holes...
try to break the perfect impression of the 3D :buttrock:
godd idea for the 2 adds on the side !
otacon
07-26-2002, 12:51 AM
Alright YoGoLo. i see what you mean now...ill start working on that.
otacon
07-26-2002, 05:50 PM
Heres a GI render for ya, before i start working more on the contraption.:p
otacon
07-27-2002, 10:44 PM
I redid a lot of the contraption to make it look more like what YoGoLo was talking about. I think it looks better now. Tell me your opinion of the new version......or anything for that matter. :)
Lukashi
07-27-2002, 10:45 PM
yep definetly better nice job
ZrO-1
07-27-2002, 10:59 PM
Much better. Great improovement on that burden.

Nice work. It needs a little more expresion [only my point of view]. Keep up the good work

07-28-2002, 06:13 AM
:D six straight episodes of bebop on cartoon network........now that was quality television :D
I put this guy in a pose, and redid some of the snow......tell me how it looks.:)
ZrO-1
07-28-2002, 08:04 AM
Yeah man, I was in Bebop heaven. This Saturday and last Saturday Cartoon Network aired six straight. I always do some of my best work after seeing that show ;).
The pose is looking good. I think it might need a little work, but it's hard to say from this angle.
derwolpertinger
07-28-2002, 12:13 PM
hey-lookin cool but i got two suggestions regarding the posing of your BoB. first i think it might look cooler if hie head is more like lookin' down on the ground. and i tested his pose on my self and recognized that the arms can't be angled like that at the elbow. test it on yourself and you see what i mean(well i hope so..:D).
so on...:)
otacon
07-28-2002, 05:14 PM
I was also thinking about putting the head down, i think ill try that. And ill mess with the arms some too, because that is a weird position.
Lukashi
07-28-2002, 05:16 PM
i donno about you guys but i usually dont arch my ankles up that high...
otacon
07-28-2002, 05:19 PM
Ill work on that too.;)
otacon
07-28-2002, 10:54 PM
Heres the latest upddate. I put his head down some, but i tried messing with the arms and I couldnt get them to look right in another position. So i just kept them the same. I also added some birds to the scene. Comments appreciated.:D
ZrO-1
07-28-2002, 11:51 PM
One thing you could try for the arms is to shorten the rods on the burden and straighten out the arms. That might help both with portraying the weight of the burden and the posture of the beast. (you wouldn't be able to keep your arms bent and muscles flexed like that for very long).
otacon
07-29-2002, 01:49 AM
good idea.;)
otacon
07-29-2002, 05:22 AM
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:annoyed: Im getting too frustrated workin on those arms. I guess i modeled them a little long, so when i stretch them out they hit the ground....and a bunch of other dumb stuff that i dont feel like fooling with. I think im going to just leave them....make that beast strain every muscle in him.
.......anyway.....any other crits besides the arms?......the more the merrier.:D
i've got an idea for how you can adjust the burden so the arms should b ok but i'll have to draw it and i'm not at a comp with pshop at the mo, will b in 30 mins or so.
otacon
07-29-2002, 05:43 AM
ill be waiting.;)
ok, just an idea, needs beefing up too, but you'll get the general idea
cheers
otacon
07-29-2002, 06:19 AM
I like the idea:thumbsup: .......but......i kind of wanted to keep the contraption the way it is....with the beast having to hold up all the weight himself. hmmmmmm....ill think about it some more, and i might try to come up with something similar, because i see what you mean........ill think about it.:D And thanks for the input.;)
otacon
07-29-2002, 08:36 PM
Heres a snowy version of it. And i tried working with the arms more, but....forget it. Im gonna keep them. And im going to Kings Island tommorow, so no updates for a while. But if anyone can point out something else besides the arms, it would be a big help. Thanks.:bounce:
otacon
08-01-2002, 07:34 PM
I was wondering......for my final image, should i put falling snow in it or not? Which would look better.
YoGoLo
08-02-2002, 09:39 AM
in my own opinion U should leave the snow
it looks good
and I'm happy to see that U have changed the burden :)
I think that it looks greater now !
:bounce:
otacon
08-02-2002, 05:03 PM
Thanks YoGoLo.:) I decided ill leave the snow in for the final image.
otacon
08-03-2002, 05:55 PM
So heres the final image.:applause: Thanks to everyone who commented and replied....you were all a big help. I learned a LOT during this challenge and had tons of fun making my first character. Cant wait until the next one.:D

08-03-2002, 06:23 PM
You did a really great job otacon. I really like your final piece. you did an absolutely awesome job on this one. Sweet stuff! :applause: :applause:
