Just to get my thread up.

I liked the topic but dont know if I will be able to do much with this challenge for im currently working on a 5 minute short, but if time allows it, I promise you a superb piece.

ive been working on the whole thing face and everything but decided to post the face first, I just started, havent spent nearly enough time on the face that I will eventually. You guys will like the idea I am going to come up with, just be patient. Ive decided to not take this challenge into photrealism, but rather then cartoony realism, if you catch my drift, probably wont win, but you will like what ive come up with, when my scanner works, Ill throw up the sketches

Hey, thanks for the comments guys, my self esteem to finish this thing just went up a notch. Latelly ive been an insomniac, so ive actually had time to work on this challenge other than just the short im doing. More updates on the way. HA, wait till its finished, I havent even begun on expression and detail with thest 2 yet. The donkey will look like hes been holding a crap for 3 days, and the guy/monster? will be a dirty heavy duty traveler, sort of like the doner party if anyone is familiar with US history.

tnx for the C&C

:applause: At first i thought the humanoid character was the beast, but no it's the donkey, he he, a good classic and very well done, it's promising.

Looks kinda like the Donkey from Shrek, Awsome work man, a great classic, accentuated by some darn fine modeling! Keep it up!

Sweet idea! This is looking good! I love the guy's face. :applause:

The donkey reminds me of Eddie Murphy, though. I keep hearing him saying "In the morning, I'm makin' waffles!" lol

SEL
07-08-2002, 05:57 AM
tnx for the replys. Dont worry, when im done with the donkey, whether I throw a mo hawk or give hime one eye. He wont look anything like the donkey from shrek. I just need a donkey with real small proportions is all and a hell of a lot of emotion. If your wondering the approach im taking modeling it. Im going piece by piece so I can throw everything into layers to work on each individual detail, and then ill combine it in the end or when I think suitable. tnx for the replys.

hope you like..

Cool! :D

I was thinking along the same lines when I first read 'beat of burden' - little animal, big fat oaf riding it...

it's nice to see the idea come to fruition (and probably about 10 times better then I would have in about 10000th of the time!)

All looks great - especially the donkey, as the other guys have said - it's very Shrek, but I don't think that's a bad thing!

AJ, hey bud, thanks for the comments, means a lot, especially when trying to finish these two with so many other things going on. I actually decided to go the cartoonish ruite for once ever since I put up the thread for PIXAR EYES. Decided that if I have enough time to texture these guys, that they would be the perfect specimens for the pixar eyes. I hope I get around to texturing them, the way I figure it I still need all the harnesses, shirt, finish the donkey, finish the guys face, more props, hands, etc. etc. This coming up weekend ill put a lot into this. Thats all for now, here is a larger pic of the two, hope you guys enjoy it!

Heres the approach im going with, no textures, except background which was done in photoshop, etc. Once done, I may use this as a poster in my short, ha :), all this work and all it gets used for is a measly poster. Either or, the final will be done untextured, yet I still may texture this thing if I have the time, just modeling for now, there are still lots of things that need work.. I hope you enjoy, C&C always appreciative. tnx

iC4- tnx for the comments means a lot!

Hey all, well ive put some time into this the last couple nights and dont worry its still not even close to being finished. I have a surprise for a 3rd character that I will debut later on with this. I really need to get back to my short, so plan on updates sometime during the week to weeks end! Im glad you guys like it... more to come!

Virtuoso - hey, thanks for the great comments, those are what always keep me motivated, people prolly miss my thread cous I update like at 4AM in the morning for that is my only time to work on this WIP. Dont worry though, Im not close to being finished, I still have a couple tricks up my sleeve that I will leave for the end. Tnx again!

Slot - hey slot, well the donkey models proportions were inspired by shrek, since I was going cartoonish this time I guess it came out pretty close, my final idea wasnt going to look like that though, but if everyone likes it, I may finish him the way he is and maybe texture and throw on some fur as well, well see what my mind can come up with. Tnx also for the comments :buttrock:

Espaki - hey bud, thanks for the C&C, Im currently in works on a short which will debut next year, Im pretty excited for we finally got some render scenes down of different scenes and scenerios, were currently on texturing and character expression (blenshapes) which are very tedious work, who knows, maybe by next year me and my crew will be famous, or like a bad movie, die and be forgotten..... As far as the this piece, well see if I have time to animate them, thats putting a ton of work on my shoulders! :) dont worry though, they havent really been posed yet, and the faces are still a WIP, but this weekend, I should havce time to get some new renders up..

That's turned out fantastic! Just one crit, nothing as far as the modeling, cause I think it's top notch work, - Perhaps the Donkey could be straining a little more, He looks pretty solid for having such a monster on his back, Maybe have his legs bent and strained a tad, Otherwise, absolutely fantastic work!

07-15-2002, 01:44 AM
wow, great image! I think he could use a "wife-beater" shirt and some definition in the arms, maybe some Metal rings around the barrels to hold them together....belt loops on his pants, and maybe something dangling from his backpack--like pots and pans or something. Keep it up, I like the style of this one!

I'd work a bit to stylize his arms - a bit more curves like the donkey maybe?

Hey all, well I havent updated this thing in almost a week now, for I havent had the chance because of the short im working on and school and all. I really hope to finish for I told myself I wouldnt enter this challenge unless I finish it. There is still a ton of things to do and add. Plan on updates within the month, just not as often as I have been for ive been under a lot of pressure latelly as I know so many animators and artists are as well. Tnx for all the C&C everyone, as you see, I never leave anyone out, for if they take the time to help me, I should take the time to atleast respond or help as well. I still promise you a completed masterpiece, so dont worry and be patient. tnx again....

Thanks guys, in no particular order:

burnout- tnk for the comments bud, it always helps me finish these things

Clockwork- Hey clockwork, thanks for the C&C, as far as the donkey, his legs head and body arent attached yet, when I start on final tweeks of the characters, trust me, there will be a ton of strain on hs face and body, and the monster as well. Tnk again!

3DZukini- Thanks, some of your ideas I may just use, especially the barrel one, cant believe I forgot the metal rings around them, well that what C&C are for, I appreciate it..

l_farley13_l - tnk for the help bud, except right now the monster is half naked in the blistering cold. I was actually gonna put this 40 style war type of clothing on him, so dont worry, but thanks for the help.

Very funny :). could you give us the wireframe? I wonder how clean is that model, coz it looks hellish good. The positioning of that guys left arm is a bit unnatural, and the gloves look like there where hands, try to fix it, maybe a leather bump map? I think that;s allowed. And that's all I think, there isn't much to comment in such great piece of work.

:surprised Hey how did u make that strom im trying to get a sand storm feel for my beast but ive failed, plz tell me how u did it : )

SEL
07-28-2002, 06:39 AM
Crash- hey crash, thanks bud for the comments and critiques, very helpful! I also got a wire up for you, I have a couple more if you want me to throw them up, its up to you. The guys left arm is like that cous hes holding the reigns of the horse which will be more visable on the final piece, another reason I put them so high was before it blocked the donkeys face, but Ill see if I can do something about it so its more natural, as far as the hands, right now they look like gloves, but they will be plain hands, I havent done the big shirt for this guy yet, hes still naked in the blistering cold, im working on that and a new surprise tonight, Ill throw those up tommarrow morning, thanks for the post!

Lukashi - hey bud, as far as the storm, and everything else, they are all composites, the storm I could have done with a particle effect in maya, but to get it just right, I would need to spend some extra time which I do not, so i did it in photoshop on its own layer, to get the dust cloud that you are asking for, I dont know what program you are using, but I suggest doing a particle cloud emitting from the surface, and just make it dense. It just matter how in depth you want to get with particles for you can create mini tornadoes and dark clouds in the sky and all that really easy, but time needs to be spent on it to look right is all. I suggest you do it the fast and less stressing way and photoshop it, maybe still think about doing the fog cloud from the surface in your progrma though. I use MAYA 4.0 by the way.

shaun, thanks for the C&C guys...

oh, the dark blue are nurbs, and the lighter blue are polygon modeling! :P, I just saw it came out blurry so I attached another one too!

Hey all,

well, as you know, ive only had minimal time to update this thing, and I try to whenever my short, art, or school, are not in the way. Its very tough for me, as I talked to one of the members of the group tonight, and the extra time even though its minimal working on this BOB, should go to the short, for that is so much more important to my career as well as the other guys in the group. So my time will be spent with that until we finish, im sorry, I do plan on posting my final image before the deadline, but for now, I will not have time to update.. Thanks for all your C&C thus far, its helped me finish this thing even if its 3 or 4am in the morning that I have time to work on it. P.S.
