View Full Version : Playblast flickers in Maya
spacekitty 03-08-2004, 05:38 AM Help!!!
I'm trying to run a playblast of my first real time environment but no matter what I try my textures keep flickering. Does anyone know how to cure this problem? I'd appreciate any suggestions. I'm using Maya 4.5
This file is 17M so it takes a few seconds to download.

Isn't there anybody that knows how to cure this?
Every environment that I try to playblast has this flicker problem. I'm just trying to get a camera fly through for my demo reel. Any suggestions are appreciated..... i've tried everything that i can think of.

Are you using alpha maps in this environment? (Sorry, I'm on 56k, it's hard to download that big file). If you're using alpha maps, I know Maya has a hard time rendering alpha maps in realtime - you tend to get lots of "popping/flickering" when moving around in the viewfinder as well as rendering a playblast (since it's a realtime quick render) - it may be something as simple as that, which you can't really fix w/maya unfortunately.
Another reason maybe that it's skipping some frames? But, that doesn't sound like your problem.
Have you just tried doing a short render instead? Try that as a test and see if things are still flickering.
Sorry I couldn't help any better.
id say its probably your video card. playblast is a screen grab from hardware render. hardware render runs off videocard.
is your map a power of 2?

I've got about 5 alpha maps in the scene. I'll try getting rid of those and also try rendering it out on a different computer with a better video card. Thanks for the help!!

I don't understand this question.... could you explain? sorry, I"m a newbie
a power of 2 is :
2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 and so on.

I don't see the problem. Sure there's a bit of flickering, but so what?, it's just a playblast. The timing and general composition of the scene is shown perfectly fine, which is all that really matters with playblasts.
I know it's not the solution you're asking for, I just personally don't see those small visual glitches as anything to dedicate time towards solving.

Thanks but that's not really what I meant by clarifying the question. I know what a power of 2 is but what does that have in regards to the map? Are you referring to the resolution?

Why yes he is.

sorry for the slow comprehension... nobody has ever asked me that question :)

The shimmering is Maya not bothering to anti-alias (it never does this in the viewport). The popping of the trees is Maya's unique way of dealing with alpha chanels rendered realtime. Though I'm confused as to why it's doing it the way it is--isn't that white building one solid mesh?
Anyway, there are a couple of things to do to fix it. First is to render with the Hardware Render Buffer (windows>rendering>hardware render buffer) There you can turn on things like multi-pass rendering, anti-aliasing, and (slightly) improved trasnparency sorting.
If that doesn't work and you want to be able to use vertex coloring, you've got a bit of a headache on your hands, because you have to add a node to each of your shaders.
Try out the render buffer first and let me know how it works; I'm going to have to dig back into my brain to find out what that other node was actually called.
