i've an imported worldmap eps (illustrator) and now i want to wrap around a sphere and extrude it ?
how can i do this easily ??
cheers

create two Bend deformers each with a curvature of 3.141 for the object you want to deform. rotate each bend so they are 90 degrees offset from each other. Then select both deformers and scale them to adjust the size of the sphere deform.
thanks
i'll give this a try ;-))

project curves on surface, or use the sculpt deformer.
;)

there is no option for a 360° projection to deform the curves in than way.
sculpt does not work either for a 360° deformation with planar curves.
:rolleyes:
... and the bend tip isn't working for me ;-(

hmm..
a mix of a bend and a lattice works for me:
first apply a bend on your splines like jadamburke described.
then you have a tube like result.
now select the tube deformed objects again and apply a lattice.
(e.g. 4x4)
create a reference nubs sphere.
be sure to set the local influence value as high as the global divisions from the lattice.
now deform the lattice point so that the deformed splines match the sphere outlines..

(there must be a smarter way to do that :/ )

Think of it as bending on two axes. You bend it into a tube then bend the open ends into a sphere.
1. select the curves
2. deform>create nonlinear>bend
3. center the bend handle to the middle of your curves
4. rotate the bend handle 90 degrees on the y axis
5. change the curvature to 3.142 (pi)
6. select the curves again.
7. deform>create nonlinear>bend
8. center the bend handle to the middle of your curves
9. rotate the ben handle 90 degrees on the y and -90 on x
10. change the curvature to 3.142 (pi)
11. select both bend handles and group them.
12. scale the group to effect the size of the sphere you want
@jadamburke
this works only for the raw imported file. if i make the eps planar befor bending (it'll extruded later) it looks very funny ?!

jadamburke:
can you please show an image on how you transfor a plane into a sphere with your bend deformers?
i neither get the idea nor the result
cheers

@alexx
it works fine ;-)) but only for the nurbs outline ;-(

yeah you're better off with converting your surfaces to polys. Planar trims don't work if the curves aren't planar. Even if you delete the history, the trimmed surfaces won't deform quite right. Not sure why though.
you can attach any new object to the deformer by clicking Window>Relationship Editors>Deformer Sets
Hilight the appropriate bend deformer set on the left then click select the objects you want to add on the right so they are grey.
order does matter. make sure bend1 is connected first then bend2.

the only thing you can get from 2 bend deformers is either a semi-sphere or a double-sphere (meaning the surface is folded twice).

this is fun andjust wha I needed
here is some wicked output I just played with

yep,
thanks to jadamburke for workiing this out for me :applause:
@mimo8 a short HOWTO ?

ok maybe someone can help me:
for me all this only works, when i do the curvature of the first bend deformer to PI/2..
having PI twice gives me very odd results and never a sphere..

just did the eps import as alex explained
so we have a textsphere consisting out of splines
I just extruded them - the inner parts of the text seem to be oriented other way round so that are the colums coming out
gave them the red blin color
than I beveld the text and gave it the white color so you can still reade it and mental rayd it
c´est ça!
@alexx
play with the scale on y (it must 2 time higher to form a tube) then apply the second bend deformer.

ok i see :)
doubling the length of the one deformer is the same as applying only PI/2. same effect.
nice one
thanx to all :)

@mimo8
1. you typed your text in pe. illustrator
2. import the illu eps
3. do the extrude
4. bend -wrap ?
5. or 4 before 3 ?

@ahs
I did the wrap first and then the extrude
also I played arround with the scaling of the two bend objecs to get it a sphere (without scaling it was a torus) ... and the attachment here is also just with a bigger scaling like half of a sphere .. as u can see
some update
needed a cover for a cd and worked it out the "eps"wrap way :D
http://www.xdv.org/mmm/download/portfolio/graffiti3.2.jpg
for the mental ray it is more or less the settings steven tubbrit describes on his homepage
sorry for my stupid Q
but you do a bevel(+) on the wrapped outlines or do ypu convert the eps outlines in something before ?
cheers
andreas
btw: it looks like you "bevel" the outlines !
ohhh.
you do a distance extrude ?!
cheers
andreas

yes distance extrude and the bevel I do on the same lines I extruded before
so once the eps (just importet nothing else - and grouped) is getting extruded (distance) and the same lines are getting beveled
but actualy it are totaly normal splines and as with every spline you can do whatever a spline can do
you also could cut wholes into a surface with them etc ... it was really just a short try of mine but I also liked the result at once so I thought I´ll post it
thnx again to alex, alias and god

yeahh :)
indeed. 1 1/2 hour in the car and we were standing at the snowed mountains of a small ski-ressort..
heavenly weather and great snow..
man. i am quite tanned right now.
really strange. my body was not really sure what was happening to it: fresh air, sunshine and physical workout all day :)

this post is getting better and better
I think they should open a snowboard&ski forum here on cgtalk
yesterday I had to stop looking at a snowboard video cause I was getting too horny :D
knowing how much snow there is at the moment in the alps doesn´t make it better
I am quite close to drag out my creditcard and get a flight into the snow :cool:
