View Full Version : beast of burden - character - roman
Roman 07-04-2002, 11:46 AM So, my first CG challenge! I really like the subject, i must say. Looking forward in participating and see some great work.
Hmm, well here is my first sketch. My beast will be some mixture between a bull and a terrier (dog). It's suppose will be to transport humans (2, maybe more) and their bagage. Some sort of travelling buddy. Still not sure about how to mount everything on it. Also thinking about adding some gigantic horns. I suppose the head will be dog-like. It's my first time moddeling an animal, so... I'll be back with some updates.

So, the first step into creating this creature. Hmm not sure if i'm doing the right thing by modeling in different pieces (legs, head, body) and then welding. Hmm need some reference on the leg muscles. First I'll do some sketching on the mounting and maybe horns.

Ok here is another update on the modeling.
Still no feedback or replys? Weird, seems to happen to every thread I open...:surprised
cool :)
He reminds me of a giant guini-pig. His size is perfect.
I can't wait to see some more updates.

giant guini-pig? Maybe a kewler concept :) Already doubting if want to with the cow/bull feet. hmm, maybe I'll make it a giant bull terrier instead. Well that's it for today.

Here the update for today. Still creating the main 'form'(?). After that I'll be adding details, and change some things. I suppose I'll have some trouble adding the air/fur, any tips? And after that I'll be doing the head and the harness etc. Thinking about making it a travelling/hunting/"war" "vehicle", with somesort of digimon/pokemon/mononoke feeling to it (at least Í'll try.. :D)
Had some trouble putting the front legs and backbody together, but here it is.
Btw. I really could use some feedback, since that is what a big part of this challenge is about.;)

Thanks! About the tail, hmm well it's supposed to be so. I'm planning to use it to lean something to it (the harness and mountings), so it should be a bit firm ans stable. And I like the line/silhouete it creates. But I'll take a look and see how it looks when a bit rounder.

So, I went on working on the neck, and did some tweaking on the belly area.

So finished the basic mesh (i was supposed to stop for the day, but...). Now first I'll be doing the basic shapes of the head (eye's, mouth, nose etc.). But that's for tommorow, when i'll do some drawing and take some time off the computer. Then I'll be adding the details etc..(since this is a modeling contest)
I just wonder why I get so little response?! Well, I'd still like feedback, critique, tips etc.. I rally need them!:hmm: :D

moujot: Thanks, this also the mood I'll probally go with in my final image. Still have to think about wich mood/emotion to show.(since they all 4 are quite "negative"):hmm:
ZrO-1: Well I based my concept on a bull and a bull terrier, so.. ;)

I think you hit the mark...looks great...just like your sketch...great modeling. can't wait to see his face:thumbsup:
Roman
07-06-2002, 04:58 PM
Well, here is some progress on the face. Hard time getting it all edgelooped, etc. I must say this is a real challenge for myself, and am quite satisfied with the results I'm getting. Should be doing other things though :D (this is addicting..)

Your scene looks great.
It is addictive I feel like if I don't keep updating I don't have a chance.
I love the body the concept of the dog with hooves (spelled wrong.
How do you get that sort of all over glowing effect in your render?
keep up the good work.

Hmm, had some real trouble with the nose and specialy the eye. Still seems wrong for me, but I don't know why. I suppose it's missing ears or something also. So I'll be adding some.
dmonk: thanks, I got the same feeling, sort of. Also really enjoying creating this BoB. :) Glowing effect is just some post. in Photoshop. Just adding a second transparent layer with gaussian blur.
jjburton: thanks also, I must say it really helps having a good concept sketch to work of. (normally I just sculp around, tweak, tweak... :))

lookin' cool so far. i like the eyes , too. but the nose and the part between the nose and the eyes seems a bit wrong for me.mybe you just have to seperate the nose a bit-like a dogs nose is also a little bit seperated. hmmm i would like to explain it better but my english knowledge isn't sufficient to tell you things about a dogs nose. :annoyed:
hope to see some updates soon!:bounce:

hi :wavey:
I'm not sure if you mean this "derwolpertinger"
but I think he looks kind of sad on the last shot, maybe a bit lonely even, although I'm nearly sure it's the view the screen was taken from
I'd think it'd look a bit better if you either put the eyes up a bit higher(maybe a really small but closer to each other) or make the nose a bit lower and slimmer at the top
I really like the lighting, and the screen with the bipeds on them, it looks a bit like small children playing with their (a bit too large) dog they just got for christmas :)

He, I didn't know that you were also a Dutch person. I really like your BoB. The way you model it, I like it. Modeling the things in seperate ways. I also like your concept.
How is it to be a student on the "HKU", are ypu following the course in Hilversum (the "Media Acedemie"), I wanted to go there to get better in 3D, but the couldn't learn me more then I already learned on my "Grafische School (GLR)" So I go into the business work. (With succes "Spacecowboyz (http://www.spacecowboyz.nl) )
Maybe you can take a look at his eye. It think it doesn't look alright.
But keep on going and I will following your progress.

Having trouble with the head, and some hair tests I did. But I think I'll just skip the head for the moment, do some hair testing, and go over to adding somer muscle definition and the harness. Although this week I wont be near my computer.. :D (gone for the week)
NGKrush:(ken ik jou niet ergens van ;)) About the expression on his face, I'm going with the sad/lonely/tired look, since that is one of the guidlines of the challenge (the others wont fit within my concept I believe). And that part about those kids, that's also part of the concept (see on the firtst page, my remark about adigimon/pokemon/mononoke feeling). If I'll have enough time I'll be doing 2 human characters also. (but I suppose I wont..:hmm: time time)
derwolpertinger: I believe I got an idea on watch u mean, but I'm not sure sure. Also I must say the head has been based on a bull terrier, not a typical dog head. :)
Mr. Nice Guy: I'll reply in dutch if you don't mind. :)

My last update for the coming week, did a test setup for the mounting. Scaled the bipeds a bit smaller. It's just a test! Feedback and ideas appreciated.:)

Hey great to see him coming along. Is it a big dog or small people?
Roman
07-08-2002, 04:16 PM
It is a giant doglike creature. I'm thinking about making it into some sort of royal caravan. For a kingdom of children (no small people). I'll have to make some room for a girl/queen. But that's just an idea.:hmm:

I'm back. So here is another small update, cause I had to do some lowpoly game related modeling first. Just added the ears, did some more head tweaking and did something with the hooves. It still needs alot of work, but I think I'll do some work on the human characters first before finishing the my BoB. (just because that's more fun :))
Let me know what you think about the ears.(could not find any goed reference on dog ears..)

Here the first pictures of the human character. I'm going for a anime-ish look. I'm not sure wich version is the best (see belly), a or b. Thinking about taking a for the boys and b as basis for the little princess. I will see. Also a picture showing the scale. I'm slowing down a bit, it's nice weather over here... AND also not getting any feedback, can be a bit de-motivating.:hmm:
So, tomorrow 2 of my "wisdomteeth" (sorry for my bad english..) pulled out, so I wont be doing too much modelling (although I'll do my best, I'have to finish this!):annoyed:
hmmm, summertime...

Hello, I'm sorry to tell I won't finish this challenge:hmm: , althought I'd really would like to. But I guess I had to many other things on my head, and vacation, so time and motivation (always important) were a bit on the low:hmm: . Anyways, planning to finish this project in the near future as soon as I'm back from my vacation in Barcelona. (although I got a new modeling job on a game waiting also...:D) Also I must say I really enjoy all the work I've seen in this challenge, some quite impressive pieces.. Here is some work I did on one of the kids. bye :wavey:
