View Full Version : beast of burden - character - iC4-
ok, haven't a sketch yet, but will post it soon
what my beast will look like:
it's a two headed monster bull which hauls the vehicle of the devil, so it's the devils beast of burden

ok, here is what my bull will look like.............afraid? :)
http://icascg.tripod.com/bull45.jpg
lol.....here is something how it could really look like, just add a second head, more mucsles, more teeth, many chains....
http://icascg.tripod.com/stock-bull.jpg
this is the thing he will carry
maybe I will also model a little demon which rides on him
first 3d pic
at the moment it looks a bit too friendly :wip:
update......wanna know how the two look together

oh damn, two heads, just like I've imagined :p
good luck!
next picture, hope it's not too dark? (if so just say)
wondering that there are no crits or comments

hmm, yeah, a bit dark, at least to see modeling..
Coming along great anyway, and fast! Love the broken horns.
I think maybe people are overwhelmed with threads already..heh. Who knows..constant struggle.
Keep 'em coming..
yeah maybe, there are really MUCH threads at the moment :)

I know it's just the beggining, but it suffers from the gumby look. Look at some reference, where do the bones stick out where the skin is thin, where are the large muscle masses, how do the muscles attach to the bones?
g
I know at the moment it looks like a big piece of meat :) but hey, it's the first challenge day
sure I will work on this

Moooh - ehm, great, I mean *G*
Looks like those two could have a decent
fight about who will eat the last daisy flower :p
added some belts
still no comments or crits?

Great model. I like everything except the feet. You need to work on the ankles. Right now it looks like it's wearing pants. Everything else is cool. The dark shaded version reminds me a bit of the bull that's down by wall street here in NY.
thx zro-1, will work on this :p

He that is gooing really well I wish I already had the moddeling skils you are having now. :applause:
Your ox is good man I only think you could look at the back legs and his butt.
little update
playin with some gi scripts in maya :wip:
also started working on the vehicle, changed my concept a bit......I think you can see what it will be :wip:
only worked a few minutes on this, just to let you see what it will be :)

Very nice...
you should put some strength , the beast is pulling a hard charge.
Sorry about the english...
do you mean the pose of the model? this is only the "modeling" pose....this will change after I finished the model

Looks great, comming along nicely...
I think you may want to look at examples of oxen pulling blows, or Horses. I've always seen a harness over the shoulders, I think your bull would endup pulling him self out of that belt he has on.

thx for these images redfuzz, I will change this

Really nice work, IC4-! You're creating a great impression that the creature is straining to pull the weight. Love it!
Steve
thx, like your character too - it has much "character" ;)
:applause: Cool! :applause:
I like the force sensation that gives the front leg extended !
I think that this image is going to be usefull for you!
inanna
07-08-2002, 11:34 AM
I love the rendering of the beast! :bounce: Maybe it's back legs could be angled back a bit against the strain of pulling? Also, will the two heads be identical? Really nice work!
JJ3d: thx for this image, it's very helpful
inanna: first thx, and yes you are right, I think I will change this. and adding a bit random is also a good idea

Just a little thing... the chains look a little too circular. This may be what you're after, but I'm thinking the chains look a little weak like that. I think your beast would tear them from the frame!!
Just an opinion! :D
at the moment these chains are just placeholders, there will be better ones after I finished the harness
little update
not sure about the front harness, maybe I will try something else
at the moment I'm thinking about what the rider will look like, and about the vehicle which the beast hauls :wip:
started working on the rider
it will be a strong ork type creature, maybe a bit fat with heavy armor
little update - still alot to do :wip:
and PLS some crits!!

07-10-2002, 02:46 AM
THe Orc's head looks really really square. I like the rest of him, but I'm not diggin the head.
BrainFaucet
07-10-2002, 12:59 PM
I love the beasts!
I'm going to have to agree with ZrO-1 about the Orc's head.
Other than that it looks great! Keep up the good work!
thx for the crits ZrO-1 and BrainFaucet, have worked on the head
better so?
also decided that I don't like the orcs armor....will model his body and he will only wear trousers and maybe some "belts" from the shoulders to the hip....
It just get better and better every time you update it. I like a lot the body setup of the driver.
:applause:

07-10-2002, 05:43 PM
I think his jawbone looks a bit strange. But other than that, its great :)
hey bud, great job on the characters, also tnx, for the post! The only thing I can see that would make this character come alive is attention to little detail, but maybe your leaving that until the end. Great overal piece my friend! Keep it coming... :applause:
TheSEL
thx for all the comments :p
btw I love comments, and it's 1000 better to have hard crits than no crits
TheSel: yep I plan to add details after I finished the main parts
GlasS-: hm, will see what I can do, but most orcs from the pictures I have have that kind of jaw
have started working on the orcs body.....hope the proportions and the mucles are right......first time modeling these stuff
here's the picture
little update :wip:
no comments on the body?

07-11-2002, 03:19 PM
This is looking interesting. I am eager to see the finished piece!
I like the idea of taking a realistic approach and squeezing it dry with skill and magic - Get what I mean! Good luck
thx for the comments :p
Bezerker75: I know I have to work on the trousers, and can you maybe explain what pecs are? couldn't find it in my dictionary
changed some small things on the beast......here a picture with beast + rider
what I will do next:
-rig the orc
-add some corpses to the wagon (hang up on the chains)
-redo the beasts head (more agressive)
-change the front legs to something more beast like (big claws)
-add some armor mask to the beast
-add some skulls, they will hang on the chains
-the beast will get a bone in the mouth (part of the harness)
-redo the harness
-add a flag which the orc carries (there will come a demon out of the flag......)
and much more :)
hm........I think I have to start working now :D
any comments critics?
modeled the corps...have to tweak the legs a bit
I just recognized the I have to change the saddle because it's too wide.....the orc doesn't fit in it :wip:

Oooooh... he's all deeeeead.
How dead will these people be? Recently dead, or are you going to plague them up a little? You know, pock-marks, pustules, bits flesh missing etc.
May you could make them zombies!
"Braaaains! BraaaaiinS!..... Or heck, liver'll do!"
hey thx erilaz, thats a great idea, will make them more zombie like
KnightWhitie
07-16-2002, 10:29 PM
Nice work! I like your character as weel as your contraption:thumbsup:
thx KnightWhitie ;)
worked a bit on the beast, here is an update (modeling pose)
anybody has an idea how I could make the saddle? A normal saddle doesn't work because the beast is too "fat" for the rider
nirishere
07-17-2002, 05:58 PM
 Well, I DO know I am "new" to the field, and haven't seen much of 3DStudio ever since DOS almost.
I must say this is impressive.
How do you guys add muscles to the bones ???
Can you give me a hand ?
Go on with the good job, although it is impressive, some more volume can be added to the figures. Especially the back muscles (let's not forget they are the devils beasts, and they USE those muscles most, don't they).
Please let me know if there's a way of putting muscles... Or did you adjust the mesh yourself ??? (Hell no !!) did you ?!
Cheers, thanx.
:buttrock:
nirishere: thx I will work on the back muscles
to the muscles, it's just some split and extrude work. First you build the basic shape of the model, then splite some faces, extrude a bit until you have the shape you like
I have attached the wireframe of my model
derwolpertinger
07-17-2002, 07:19 PM
gettin' better and better!!:buttrock: the noly things that kinda bother me are the feet. they look too much like squares right now.
but that's just my two cents!:D
hm, now if you say it, will do this when I work on the beast again - thx
have worked on the corpes/zombies a bit, here a picture (will work on the bones)
have worked a bit on the legs and tweaked some other things
the next update will be a bigger update...don't want to post too much images here :)

Now THAT is corpsy! I like! The drippy pustulant flesh is a nice touch.
And hey, if you need references, you can't go better than one of the many resident evil games out there. :D
Either that, or take a trip to the local morgue.
Family outing! :bounce:
lol I'm sure this would be a nice trip :D
resident evil sounds good, will watch the film again
atm I'm rigging all models, beast orc and zombies, I think I will make a short animation, if my computer can handle this :hmm:
ZrO-1
07-20-2002, 02:50 PM
blah, that corpse is looking rather gross. You should have some intsetines coming out by the ribs and wrapped up around the rope as if they were symbolically hanged by their own guts. :scream:
I like the start on the posing of the beast, but right now it looks like it's pulling something that's not mooving; like a tree or something. I think you need to lift up one of the feet, and move it back a bit to have it be in a mooving-pulling posture.
Great stuf so far.
I'm working on the corpse, these are just some pictures to show in which direction I'm going :)
but thx, it motivates me to work more on the corpse
to the pose: the last pictures show the "modeling pose", I will return to the older one if modeling stuff is finished
because I wanna do an animation with the beast and the wagon I decided to drop the orc, it doesn't fit to my animation concept.
allready have the animation in mind, hope it will be that good like in my head :)
here is the new character which replaces the orc, the hands will be only bones, and I think he will have no feet, he will "fly" over the earth

hmmm..i can hardly see something. the character looks like he is plain black. maybe you should brighten it up a bit.
damn always the same problem.......is my monitor really THAT bright?
will post a brighter image when the hands are done :wip:
I can see it fine here at work...
but i bet it would be dark at home.... my work and home monitors are so different...
anyway looking good... i like this character...
nice work so far

07-26-2002, 01:54 PM
I like this character much better. Nice work:beer:
d3v1n
07-27-2002, 05:53 PM
ehmm yah i can see your character fine from here. make the beast with 3 heads LoL :p
sooo, hope I will finish this challenge, but also if not it helped me to increase my modeling skills
here is the a new render, added a new organic vehicle...without textures it doesn't look like I really want.....but I will texture it after the contest :)
the new character will sit on the vehicle, but first I have to rig him
edit: vehicle picture removed because it was too big :)
and here a picture with the rider
and PLEEEEEEAAASE some c&c :bounce:
Pancreas
07-30-2002, 02:51 PM
Id only change one of the beast head, looking upwards, cuz the actual pose itīs too symmetrical. Nice bones, the skull would look more evil with frowned eyes and longer sharpen teeth.
thx pancreas for the critics :p
forgot to pose the beast, allready had a pose with different head positions and feet positions but than I remodeled something and forget to change it now :)
will do that, also the idea with the sharp teeth is good, will do that now
here are the two mainparts of the wagon, now you can better see that it's organic
neilyb
07-31-2002, 01:25 PM
I love the feel of this pice, especially those organic burdens.
I would however work on the feet of this best though, he looks like he is wearing japanese slippers!
thx neilyb, to the feet.......don't know what to change, that's how they look on my pictures  maybe you can show what exactly you mean?
here is a new picture with some colors
MikaelPersson
08-01-2002, 06:46 PM
I think I know what neilyb is getting at. You have to work a bit more on the emotion of your beast. Youīve tried to make it look like he is straining with his burden. But unfortunately you havenīt come to a satisfying result. That is mostly translated down to his legs and feet. They are just standing there, not straining.
Apart from my critique I really like your modelling skills.
hey thx Mikael, yes you are right.....will try to get a better emotion :wip:
oh and thx for the modeling skills......thats the only thing I have learned so far :) thats why I'm having some problems with rigging the character :)
erilaz
08-02-2002, 11:09 AM
I think the beast is too dark. You lose a bit of that lovely detail.
The rest is going great!
thx erilaz....I know the color is a problem, on the one hand a brighter color would show more the muscles and details......but on the other I think a brighter bull wouldn't fit to the rest of the scene
but I think to brighten it up a bit is a good idea ;)
added a simple background.......don't have really much time to make it better :annoyed:
but I will try it in the few ours which are left :)
MikaelPersson
08-03-2002, 05:37 PM
Good work on the straining beast. It looks like it is heavy for him.
Do lessen the DOF. It looks like a minature set right now.
You should be listening to erilaz. All the detail is getting lost. Brighten the image, please :)
thx Mikael, I removed the dof.....couldn't find a good result.....
also brightend up the image a bit......hope it's enough
I think this will be my final image......would like to change a bit but since the challenge is over I will do this after the challenge
no textures used in this image.....only mayas build in materials (I think this is alowed??), this means no image files only some procedurals
so here is the pic
http://members.aon.at/~afriedl1/29.jpg
WOW!Creepy stuff HerE!!!U really dont need textures 4 ur art man!Brilliant work!
MikaelPersson
08-03-2002, 09:14 PM
(hm.) :) forgive me. But I think the light in the former one looks better. More suited as you said. And you do need shadow in your picture. It got left out in your last piece.
Sorry, but I dont think procedurals are allowed, only bump maps.
Great modelling!
OZ: THX VERY MUCH :)
thx mikeal, you are absolutly right :)
just recognized that the challenge don't end today at 00:00, so I have on more day to play with the light!
again thx mikeal, really need some critics :)
don't know much about lightning.....but I will give my best :D
sooo, since procedurals aren't allowed I removed the colors, because simple colors look terrible......
here is one of the latest pictures, don't know if I will change something?!
I hope it's not too bright this time :) damn.....that hardest thing is to find a good brightness for me :)

The quality of the model comes out even without the shaders you applied. Very well done!:D

Call me the pain in your behind. But, still the dark one has the best lighting. Is it not possible just to copy those lights?
Might be a bit too late ;)
thats the old lightning
better?
