View Full Version : Beast of Burden - Character - espaki

This here is my first challenge. Been following them since the pirate one and hope I can make something neat and learn a lot at the same time.

My ideas so far are to base it off of an animal, but not something that is normally the right size the be a beast of burden. maybe something insect, pig, rodent, amphibian or reptile.

Will have some concepts up soon, looking forward to working with everyone...I have a feeling that there are going to be a lot of entries this time...

Hello all again...

Unfortunately I dont have a scanner right now so I can't get my concepts up until a couple more days. Here is where I am with the model so far after a couple hours.

Still have a long way to go...

He will have a hammock type sling hanging from his stomach which is where he will carry most of his "burden." The concepts I post will explain all.

Here's one suggestion. I'd say make the eyes look more like eyeballs. Right now it almost looks like the nostrils are it's eyes and the eyes are warts on it's cheeks.

just my 2 cents

Huge beast!
Yup! keep an eye on the concept, I think it's great! :) But you have a good model anyway, although it's a bit different from the design. I personally don't think you should start again. Btw, If you want to make it closer to the sketch you could try to shorten the legs and adjust a bit the head, but in my opinion it's OK as it is now

Mentat7

rizob
07-13-2002, 05:50 PM
nice sketch nate . did you use a wacom or mouse, i like the floating box but i would use your rule of thirds with it more. tough to explain but move the beast more to the right and the box more to the left. i will bring your eye to the beast and balance the page if it lies on points of interest.

for the model you should work the feet(from the knee down) alot more like the sketch. i like that little ankle thing on his back leg(sketch) alot.i also like your strap setup on the sketch
keep it up man

espaki
07-13-2002, 05:55 PM
Thanks fopr the comments,

Looking great..really like the head and design. Only crits would be the feet/leg, but looks like you're working on those..

Aside from that, still kinda looks like he could carry that burden and not even notice..unless it's VERY dense material. Maybe some stuff on the back? or towing behind? This guy looks massively strong.

Keep 'em coming :)

P.S. Nice paint too..painter always seemed too crazy to use, but I keep seeing people do cool stuff like that, have to try sometime..

This is an über-beast, should easily be able to lift everything you throw at it. If the speed is acceptable and the walk smooth enough, this'd be perfect for traveling or safaris!

I can imagine a passenger department instead of the bag for the burden, kind of like traveling a dirigible, well without the flying! Even in the deepest desert it'd still be shady below his big body and you'd be safe from wild animals, this BoB has no natural predators!

Love your work, keep it up! :)

I'm really digging your model. The only thing I think you might want to put a little more thought into is the location of the beast's burden.

What happens when this creature want's to use the bathroom?

Anyhow awesome work.

Roman
07-16-2002, 10:47 PM
Still like it, but did you scale up the eye? Cause I really liked it smaller, really changes the character..

espaki
07-21-2002, 07:49 PM
Once again, thanks for the comments. I unfortunately haven't spent much time on my BoB lately, but I will get something done today. I am finishing up my model and getting going on the harness/burden accessories.

3D Zukini and Roman: I have been jumping back and forth between packages, Nendo for the model, and 3D Max for rendering. the eye shifts around every time I reimport my model. I will get it in one place soon. And Zukini, I agree with you, I will make it one solid color.

Miyamoto: I have thought about the "Bathroom" issue. I agree that it might be strange, but I cant think of anything else to do. I wanted my burden location to be unique, but we will see where it ends up. Can't have my BoB peein' all over the burden can we? :hmm:

Gollum: some kind of enclosed passenger thing might work. I will mess around with some ideas and see whats happens.

Rizob: I see what you mean with the skin pieces. I might keep 1 and remove the other, or get rid of them both, or make more on the rest of him to unify the whole design.

All comments/critiques/ideas/suggestions VERY welcome.

Espaki- I don't know if I would leave the lumps, it kinda looks creepy, where your beast was almost big / friendly before. I just think that it takes away from his character. nice experiment though:beer:

rizob
07-23-2002, 03:48 PM
yes yes yes, i love the bumps. i would still add alot more wrikles and folds mainly in the knee area,(also the lower foot). as i said the bumps look great, maybe give them alittle more variation in size, spacing etc. i assume you did a scattter (you mentioned it) so just scatter some larger ones. i would also add alot more wrinkles to the neck area, you have them on the top of the neck but they need to go around to the botom. i am not really liking the sharp teeth in his mouth. it implys that he eats meet, but he looks way to slow to catch it, i havent thought of a resolution yet but if i doo ill let you know.the skin flaps from shoulder to neck don't bother me that bad anymore but it does seem a little out of place, anyway kepp going is lookin good
rizzzi is now 21

Lukashi

the bumps scare me  they look like maggots or something!

espaki
07-23-2002, 06:46 PM
Thanks for the replies-

danbucknam: Good point. I might keep some larger ones to see if he retains his "Friendly Oaf" character that way, or might get rid of them.

rizob: you are right again. the sharp teeth dont fit him. i removed those and made his tongue a bit bigger, let me know what you think. also, I plan on adding more wrinkles in the bump map. I might model a few more, but time is running out and I should get going on his burden/harness.

Lukashi: maggots eh...? might be interesting to turn him into an undead BoB:insane: we will see what happens...

As far as the bumps go, I say only have a few on him (maybe half of the original amount) and have them vary more in size. From really large ones down to tiny ones like a 10 - 1 amount in size variation. Also with the bumps I'd make them more subtle, they stand out a bit too much from the skin. They almost look more like moles or warts than bumps in the skin. I love the latest pics with the new textures and wrinkle bump-map. That looks great.

Awesome work so far. I can't wait to see what your final piece will look like.

whats up nate, things are looking good. deciding where your beast lives is the fun part. to me he looks like a ferri boat for the desert. say towns in the desert are spread apart, and the only way to travel safe, is take one of these huge beasts in groups, so you can fight off scavengers. i like the idea, of cages or passenger cars on the sides of him, and maybee a lookout tower with a guard, any way just a thought, good luck

espaki
07-30-2002, 07:40 PM
Thanks Rizob, I definitely like the desert idea. Here are some things I am messing with right now. The orange tankers carry water. I am not sure if the bags and tankers fit together. I might ditch the bags and shift toward using more present-day items.

I love the skin. The legs look great! I liked the toenails better in the second last render, the grey ones instead of the shiny brown ones (unless he uses nail polish ;) )

I hope you make his tongue bright pink like a panting dog. It would give him a very weary look.

Looks really good Nate, I like the bumps you applied. Good work overall and you worked hard on him...

That turned out beautifully. Love the bump maps, and the overall model looks great:beer:
