Actually, I think that was why they put out the Gryphon video, as a test of their Bit torrent system.
Now THAT'S a good way to distribute content.
Must download.

it looks truly amazing, but the best thing is that you see a bit of their rig setup
I was wondering at one point they have a few controlers to control the cloth, comes out very well, anyone know how they do it?
reactor? cloth rays?
to they then attach the bottom parts of the cloth to the controler and the top part to the character to simulate the wind effect?

actually the cloth was done in what used to be stitch(cloth FX now?). all max, rendered in Brazil.
When we see the elve in clay render, the hair doesn't look like Shag hair's hair ???,
It's always 3dsmax ???
If somebody have great idea of what they use as plugin and rendering engine (brazil ?, renderman etc...) and the sof, please

About the hair:
Instead of shag hair, if they used Brazil, maybe they got advantage of shave and haircut coming with the next version of Brazil (as Weta did with ZBrush)
though I think you can get similar results with good tweaking of Shag hair.

Seriously, they've been using Max since Starcraft, they've accumulated a lot of experience and custom tools by now, throwing all that away wouldn't be a good idea. I'd say that the switch would cost at least 6 months and they probably can't afford that nowadays, working on SC: Ghost and WoW in paralel...
Also, take a look at www.splutterfish.com - they seem to have invested in some Brazil licenses, it wouldn't be wise for them to throw that money out the window either. The Maya renderer isn't as bad as most people think, but it's surely not as good as Brazil. PRman is cool though, but takes a lot of time and effort to get running, not to mention the money...
yes, you're right
i have read the interview, and the director of cinematic says they developp a lot of tools (like the tool they allowed to download to make new units for WCIII), and He says it could be possible to share it soon, not soon soon, but it's a possiblilty
But i think weird that the elve's hair look like shag hair when it's a render with textures, but look like nubrrs when we see the clay...

they used specially made hair shaders as i understand it. i think they make whatever is needed to make a project work best, at that time.

I do know that some very literate Maya users went on over to Blizz to work...and rumours of the package popping up inside the doors emerged around the same time...
...add Nihilistic, a Maya house, doing production on SC: Ghost and you have a happy hybrid of applications...
speculative and heresay...but my bets are that maya was used for rigging and dynamics...I cannot wait for an interview mentioning the software used...or perhaps a Blizzhead that visits this board can enlighten us??? I am not calling out names, but I would Love to know. ;)
whatever the tools there is no denying that it was great art...

as far as i know, it's still all max....maya is used for game dev tho, probably together with max
whatever
to correct one thing: shave and a haircut (for max) is NOT coming with the next version of brazil, and was not used in these cinematics.

This is some really great stuff. I do love these guys look. I wish they would post more of this kind of stuff. They are really tight lipped about everything they do. I am very curious as to what they are using for the dynamics though.
As for the whole Maya vs Max thing, I know they started the WOW and did all of WC3 cinematics in max. And since they used R3 for WC3 so as not to introduce new software into the pipeline, I would be willing to bet this is still max. I know that in the end it doesn't matter, but I really hate to see artists jumping apps becasue they think this or that cannot be done with them. I believe that sort of thinking makes for lazy artists who eventually quit when they find out you have to work to create anything worthwhile in any app. Blizzard has always been a very good testimony to the power of 3ds max.

OK but according to this: http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/sf_gen_page.php3?printer=1&page=sf_roadmap the release of S&H doesn't seem to be canceled, or maybe this page needs an update

bentlama, it was stitch(or what used to be stitch) that did the dynamics. It was rigged in max and some cs was involved too(check vid). Just to set the record straight.
there was a point mentioned about app hopping. Whether you think max or maya is the shit, they use max because their entire cinematic pipeline is based on it. Do you think they are going to convert their entire pipeline to maya after so many years? ur crazy. they do use maya in game dev though, for animation only. all modeling and rendering is pure max.
i am really happy that there was such positive feedback about the video. Can't wait to see the polished version

I have a friend who not so long was hired at Blizzard to work in the cinematics team and I remember back then he said that his team uses Max only. I think he had to learn it there, having only used Maya before.

Here's qoute from John Burnett who works in Blizzards cinematic department.
All War3 cinematics were done using 3dsmax 3.1 and the built in renderer (with the exception of the intro showing the lone orc battling the human, which was done in 3dsmax 2.5). The World of Warcraft trailer was done in 3dsmax 4.0.
The WoW trailer he was talking about is this one:
http://www.blizzard.com/wow/movies/
It's the one near the middle labelled "2001 ECTS Cinematic Trailer".
They may have added Maya later, I don't know. but I think Their northern California Division (I think it's their division) called Blizzard North does use Maya. I don't know if their focus is on Wow/Warcraft though, I think it's Diablo and others
They do use MAX, but 'recently' (begining of last year) they added a knowledge of MAYA to there 'requirements' section for applying for a job at the cinimatics department. Perhaps they are just 'enlarging' there pool of aplicants?
Im a MAX user, and have always loved Blizzards work. They are my DREAM company, and one of the reasons I got into CG (The opening sequence of WCI is still on my Harddrive, ripped using screenthief i think...)-but in all honesty-take the work at its merits. It would not be any less spectacular if it was done in Maya, XSI, or Blender. They rely on talent at Blizzard-the tools are all just gravy.
But still...give me MAX or give me death. :)
Oh yeah-on a side note...anybody else notice the clipping errors on the night-elves dress when she battles the orc? (And yes-i KNOW this is a WIP!!), and the amazing 'dissapearing nose ring' on the centaur? Hehehe...ive watched this movie way 2 many times....time 2 load it up again!!!

yeah, her skirt gets engolfed in her leg in the rendered movie.
anyway, how does blizzard gets that monstrous ammount of detail on their models? i dont think thats poly modeling only...it was impossible...do they use any special plugin for modeling such claystudio, or do they make theyre models on other program such as zbrush(i think its for modeling this one, not too sure tough) ..anyway forgive me my ignorance, but i would like if someone could tell me something about it:)
I think thats its 'easy' to get that amount of detail with polymodeling. IMHO, Poly is the best way to get detail...you need a scar, just cut it in. You need a pimple, just pull it out.
MAX has one of the most powerful modelers on the market (of course, this IS a slightly biased opinion. :) )
Im pretty certain they use there own skin shaders, and more than likely use displacement for there smaller details.
yes, all is done in poly edit, and yes, they use they own shader for skin, and use brazil too (i take some renseignment :))
i LOVE your avatar....
Yeah-I took a look at that tauren model-looks poly to me.
Of course, I doubt ALL 25 ppl on there staff have the same modeling techniques....

100% right. Lovin it, but its always breathtaking again what those guys make of it! Blizzard rox, always!
where is it ? can't find it
okay, found it. Will take 1 hour to download.
just look at this:
I recently joined the Blizzard Cinematic Team a couple of weeks ago. This place is awesome, everyday I am overwhelmed by the talent. The people that work here are really friendly, great guys. We are currently working on the cinematics for Warcraft 3. Actually this may suprise you but Blizzard Cinematics does NOT use any Maya whatsoever, everything is done with 3D Studios MAX. I am really impressed by 3DS MAX, it is extremely powerful, and in some respects it has many advantages over Maya. It's been a couple of weeks and I am quite comfortable with 3DS MAX already, but I still have a lot to learn. You could say that learning 3DS MAX and working with the team has been quite "enlightening" to say the least! I am really enjoying the learning experience, it's awesome.
this is an old interview with Aaron Chan
