View Full Version : Gmax-Is it just like 3DSMax4 but you can't use your work commercially?
souljah 01-25-2002, 09:56 PM I know it's for games, but is it basically like 3DSMax4?

That's it? Woah, that's great. Maya and Max both have free versions; XSI and lightwave are behind, well in respect to n00bs to CG.

ok... just to spoil the fun..
well gmax is missing more features then just the renderer.
eg. advanced materials and full IK.
and there's alot more.. I can't rember now though.
but still it's an ok preview of max to learn the interface.

It's missing some file I/O (can't see normal max files, can't write out a file from maxscript), some of the advanced animation stuff (stuff you wouldn't use for gaming in most cases) and rendering at all. Materials fall into that, as it's pointless setting up a render time material without a renderer.
It still is an excellent intro to 3D though. Imho, no newbie should be allowed to render anyway, besides a simple intro to what the process entails. It takes too much time to get into, and a large part of the process is rather tedious tweak-repeat cycles. I think it's far more constructive to concentrate on modelling and animation for a while. Not only will understanding 3D fundementals help in every subsequent category, but there's immediate feedback to keep a newbie interested.
