The first public version of toxic has been released!

toxic is a new open source global illumination renderer
aiming to produce photorealistic images and animations.

toxic's goal is to provide artists with a free and modern
rendering tool which is actively maintained, developed
and extended.

This first version of toxic is an early alpha version:
it still lacks some major features, and it might contain
several bugs. It is released in order to demonstrate
toxic's capabilities and to allow developers to contribute
to its development.

For the moment, only a Windows version is available.

Comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Here are a few images produced with toxic. Full resolution
images are available in the Gallery (http://toxicengine.sourceforge.net/gallery.php) section of the website.

Oh those images look great! And you did all this code alone?
It's great to see people coding open source software, especially when it reaches this high quality.

Congratulations!

ps: do you think of making a max exporter or renderer?

forgive me but for some odd reason I thought you meant it was a public version of the new Britney Spears video or something.

Then I clicked and felt silly :applause:

Looks like a promising project indeed!

I saw you're using XML for the scene description language, which is a good move most of the time - the question is: how does it look on the connectivity side of things? Any bridge for known modeling/animation apps planned or in progress?

Cool schtuff no less!

Im still tryin to wrap my head around mental ray.

Hmm 2 new maya renderers been released lately, the other of course being iguana. :applause: Both look very good and i cant wait to test em out when i have enuf time.

Thanks for all you positive comments.

toma and JamesMK: yes, bridges with modeling software are planned, both with major commercial modelers (3ds max, Maya, Softimage XSI) and with free / open source modeling tools (the author of ppModeler is planning to implement the plugin himself).

I had a look at iguana recently, it looks very promising, but most of the gallery images are using skylights to fake global illumination.

Cheers
Francois
