View Full Version : HDRI lighting
ramiro 03-05-2004, 12:10 PM Hi,
even though I dont know exactly how this is possible, I understand there are ways to light a scene using HDRI images(projecting the image in a dome covering the scene?). Is there a way to do this with ordinary images, lets say with footage shot in miniDV, and if so, how? Do you still have to place lights, or are you using the highlights of the image?
Ive been seeing more and more often in making-ofs of films someone going around the set with a silver ball. How is it used afterwards?
thanks

Silver ball's normally used just for reference, for placing the lights in the right place to start off with,
You can use a normal image to light a scene. If you're using mental ray, just stick it on a sphere in the illuminance channel. Obviously it won't look as nice as an hdri, but you can just fake this by sticking a couple of lights in the hotspots as you suggested.

thanks for the reply, one more question.
is this the only way to produce realistic lighting? Im working on a scene where dv footage is combined with a 3d element. everything looks ok, apart from the lighting(could be because i dont know how to do it correctly). its a night scene, lit with street lights. i placed some spot lights in the street lights position, plus some low intensity ambient light. it still looks a bit fake. my object is a human, so i use some simple networks for fabric/skin, not reflective surfaces. any suggestions?
also i have the ability to go back to the location and shoot some hires images with a silver ball (just read about hdrshop, plan to use it), i wonder if it will make a difference.

the solution here is to render passes and then tweak then in your compositing package. Also depending on the quality of the footage, mini dv is pretty bad - you might want to add grain.noise to make integration happen better.
post stills so we can get a sense of what you're talking about.

I post this picture, unfortunately you cant see the problems clearly, i would like to post the video file somehow, but dont know where, or how. Its supposedly a guy falling from the second floor and getting hit by the car. a few frames afterwards hes replaced by a live action guy(he hasnt been erased yet, you can see him taking position in the video. actually there are many aspects id like to discuss apart from lighting(modelling, animation, composition) so if someone knows of a place i can dload the video, please let me know.
