I've been wanting to do a 3d anim for awhile that looks like traditional chinese ink work. I have absolutely NO idea how to acheive this sort of look. :hmm: I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas to sort of point me in the right direction?

I don't think something like that would be possible with the normal shaders in maya. Non-Photorealistic Rendering tends to demand sepcialized shaders, at most you could get a generic toon shaded look. At one point I had heard that 4.5 will have a toon shader, whether that'll let you modify the outline stroke I have no idea. I do know that this would be possible in XSI.

have a snout across highend3d.com. goto the maya shaders section. near the bottom of a very big list is a shader that creates the kind of look your after. (the image next to it is a swans head). If you play with the settings you'll get some nice results.

Thanks that shader is pretty interesting. It definitely takes a lot of tweaking to get good results. I still haven't been able to get the look i'm trying for but it's kind of getting there. I've been able to get a sort of dry brush look. Well thanks again, it's starting to point me in the right direction.

there's another plugin on the site somewhere called cellShader. this is supposed to pretty damned hot and I've dl'd it myself but really haven't had time to play wit it. you could try that one too.
