View Full Version : DFX file extensions
Willax 03-04-2004, 06:35 AM Does anyone know what the file extension for DFX scenes are? Somehow all my DFX flow/scene files show up as Real Flow files with an extension of .flw and the icon is a Real Flow Icon. Do they share the same file extension?
I want to change them all back (with the DFX icon, not Real Flow Icon), but don't know what the extension is. Even my DFX installation files have the Real Flow icons and the .flw extensions. Anyone know how this happened? Somehow it became the default loader for all these scenes. Thanks Willax

Yeah, both RealFlow and DFX use .flw as file extension, but seems like RealFlow is a bit more aggressive and steals the extension to itself.
In Windows XP (and IIRC in Windows 2000 too) you can change this setting though quite easily: Right-click any .flw file and choose "Open with..." find the main executable of DFX, select in and remember to put a tick on the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file." After that alle the .flw:s should open in DFX.
Another way to do this is to create a "new" file extension to match Digital Fusion. This can be done from any Explorer window. Just go Tools -> Folder options -> File Types tab. In there you need to click "New", which opens a small box. Just type FLW to the box and click Advanced. Since you have DFX installed, you should be able to find "Digital Fusion flow" from the drop-down list labeled "associated file type". After that press OK and most propably Windows will ask you are you sure. Well duh, of course you are :) so just click Yes. Now check any .flw file you have and you should see 1) DFX icon 2) it opens in DFX when double clicked.
Hope this helped :)

Thanks Para. I haven't done it yet cause I had a couple more questions? If there are two programs using the same extension, then how can they tell each other apart? And I have already associated the DFX+ flows with opening in DFX but they are still showing the Real Flow Icon even though it says open with DFX in properties.
(edit)
Ok I did as you said, and it worked, but now all my Real Flow Files have the DFX icon and [open with] parameters. Oh well I use DFX more so thanks again Para
