View Full Version : Sam and Max game cancelled
Brettzies 03-04-2004, 04:16 AM Awww Man. First Full Throttle, now this. Both were looking supercool stylized 3-d. The old games were great, and the new generation looked pretty promising. I guess it's not to be.
"After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we've decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC" says Mike Nelson, Acting General Manager and VP of Finance and Operations. There is currently no plan to reduce staff.

argh that blows, what does Lucasarts plan to do? keep making awful star wars games til the end of time?

The worst part of it is that they admitted they cancelled Full Throttle because it wasn't living up to their expectations in terms of quality. But they're explanation for cancelling Sam and Max is purely financially motivated. Translated they're saying, "We want to make more Star Wars games."

i still think they make good games...

From my understanding, Bioware should be the one getting the credit for KOTOR, not Lucasarts. And as for Galaxies, the jury's still out on that one.

Yes, yes, we want more 3d fps games! They are so cool, and cheap to make. Last week i played with beneath a steel sky and the original sam&max, and both of them are much much better then ANY games i played with in the last 5 years. I'm thinking about buying a 486 laptop for playing. But who wants that?

I haven't played an adventure game since full throttle, god knows how long that was now ??? I would love another fix of racking my brains...
That screenshot above looked pretty funky and I am sure that there is space for some kinda adventure game out there. Publicity stunt maybe
OT. But can anyone recommend a decent adventure ???

it looks like like the adventure type games are dead, because you'll need very much creativity and time(money) to make an enjoyable adventure, secondly these types of games want to give users smtg. They make people think with the their heads. Think about the end sequence of the first(last?) sam&max. what would you think what will happen with me if I create a game where in the end you destroy capitalism ? :-)
It's pretty logical to make games that you can finnish in half year, you don't have to think about it much. The users won't too, but they'll spend there money, to get new hardware. What's good for milo minderbrinder is good for everyone :-(
I was bored with the new games, so I started to go on the retroline in a month or so. Now I'm very happy that I didn't play with these games that time. Now I can recommend beneath the steel sky(free) and grim fandango. And sam&max of course.

Yeah I can, get Broken Sword 3, or Crystal Key 2 when it's released (friend of mine worked on that (www.fox3d.com) )

Lucasarts adventure days were over with the release of Monkey 4.
Haven't the "good boys" left the building anyway ?
I think the next StarWars games will be pretty good, graphically and gameplaywise, I prefer that to another adventure with boring graphics and a disgusting control scheme, aka Escape from Monkey Island.
There are other nice adventure games like "The Westerner" or "Tony Tough".

boring graphics....funny...I'm bored with this 3d madness. All are the same. I think I'm a visual type but I had never problem with the graphics of these games. 256 colour so what?

exactly, what's wrong with 2D anyways, Monkey Island 3 was great, very nice graphics, the cartoony style added something that 3D graphics are still far from expressing.. flair and style (though grim fandango was pretty nice to look at, and a great story as well).

... damn ...
the best imho was the first Monkey Island (btw the very first game I've ever got... and still have it hehe)

Exactly. I never understood what was the rush for everyone to start jumping from the beautifull 2d to ugly optimised 3D graphics. For many years this seemed to be a major step backwards in game art And still nowadays, there is this trend for realism in game scenery when the realtime character apearence and motion are not even half way there. Whats wrong with industry i wonder... :hmm:

Noooooo!
This sucks... I don't really like the 3D Adventures that much (Grim was cool, but Monkney 4... hm...), but to hear there will be no Samnmax 2 isn't to great either.
I want Monkey 5 and Samnmax 2 in 320x200 drawn 2D! Hell, they could buy ScummVM, and just work on Story & Artwork. But noooo....

Full Throtle was one of the best, if not THE best, PC adventure games I've ever played.
The characters were imaginative, the story was fun, and the environments were rich in detail.
Too bad the current structure over there won't allow for some of these games to see the light of day.

This is F*&king lame. Would there ever be a true revival of adventure games?
Well, I'm playing Broken Sword 3 right now, and I have 4 other recent adventure games to go after that. I'm dying for the Longest Journey sequel--I'd kill someone to play that. Syberia 2 demo was just released--still downloading it.

I grabbed out ' the DIG' the otehr day and started playing it. Not quite as good as Sam and Max or full throttle (although full throttle was a tad too easy, but a fun ride nontheless). Day of the Tentacle is still probably my favourite and Monkey Island (1 - 3) were a lot of fun... i didnt like 4 much though :(
But its good fun to remenisce about the good old days *sigh*. I was looking forward to a new adventure game from Lucasarts. I havent looked at a star wars game since 'rogue sqadron' and dont really care much about playing any new ones.

Seems like Grim Fandango, which was one of my greatest games, but which wasn't a real success, turned them off.
Too bad.........

Idiots !
I don't know who has doen those "market studies", but i guess some great adventure games are just what we need with the current fps craze.
Weren't adventure games supposed to be back in vogue soon? 3d graphics have finnaly come to a point that they can do the genre justice, and it might get a few new aspects with them.
So those "market strategists" probably told lucasarts to do a fps instead...

Personally, I was very excited when I saw the E3 trailers for these games(Sam and Max and Full Throttle). I thought cool, some great animation for games, and not just running, jumping, and shooting, or player driven animation. Not that game animation is bad, just that I thought this particular game could have some great moments with squash and stretch, and other classic animation methods. Being an adventure game, it would lend itself to great acting and humor moments which could be brought forth through the animation. Would have been a fun project for animators to work on I bet.
It is also sad for me, as I found the early iterations of these types of games to be very inspirational for getting into 3D. Before there was Toy Story there was the 3d game cinematics. Before there were game cinematics, there was the "cut-scene!!!" At one point, it seemed like I was only buying LucasArts games.
And, here's a little update from the creator of Sam and Max. Apparently, he's just as confused as the rest of us over the cancellation.

We're the most creative ppl in the world, here in CG. Why wont we start makeing our own game? let say, open a site for that for the beginning, with a sketch of a story. Then adding to the details from here and there, uploading some sketches of characters, objects, landscapes etc.
The site will contain forums and chatting channels for brainstorming...
I bet there are some ppl here who can program. We just have everything here, don't we?
I have a story's sketch i've written when i was 20 (4 years ago) and sent then to Lucas Arts, I've tried to erase those parts which won't interest u, but exuse me for any mistakes i had then or whatever:

If everyone sends an e-mail to LucasArt with a formally written letter instead of coming across like a fanboy/girl, do you think they'll bring back the game?
Just a thought. :hmm:
