I wanted to finally start a wip thread for this guy here at cgtalk. The purpose for making this is merely for low-poly modeling and character design practice. Software is wings3D for modeling and C4D for rendering.

I will write up some detailed info about this Bot to explain. See, with the right budget, it can go from a utility bot to palace guard to police bot.

See the rounded extrusion on the shoulder? Those are actually covers to a docking area on the shoulder. This can be used to attach various accessories like search lights, cannons, links for towing..all kinds of stuff.

See the thin gray slab on the shoulder? This is one place where in can undock for additional accessories. The screws on the upper arm are for arm model changes. For example, the cop bot will have a service and utility arm where the shoulder dock is. It will be very thin and folds open and out. Arm change can be a weapon hand combo unit or straight artillery and don't forget a light siren combo on the shoulders.

It is so shiny due to a revolution in amorphous liquid metal components bringing birth to LM78 or HD Vitreloy. It is formed like the antique process of plastic injection molding and comes off the press ready to assemble. Due to the properties of amorphous metals, HDV hardens to a flawless shine and already sharp (if need be). It is virtually indestructible due to the atomic makeup and lack of molecular crystallization which causes structural instability in standard metals.

Its thin, light, and very inexpensive.

Yes, I do have a life...lol...*wink, wink*

This is just a small bit of this bad boy. As you can see I have ALOT of modeling to do still. Taking a break to come up with a history and purpose for something that started out as a mere doodle was really fun.

Here is the current state of the model. If you are curious to see previous versions and some test renders, feel free to do so on my site. But, I want to state that I have RTFR and am not looking for hits so if yall want the images in here, let me know please.

First Wings3D Wires of Robo WIP. (http://prymevalgraphics.com/w3d_robo_wip.htm)

Earlier Test Renderings. (http://prymevalgraphics.com/c4d_robo_wip.htm)

Finally, crits and comments are very welcome. I take both the bad with the good so give it to me.

Thanks yall,

so far he looks great, nice textures too. the red eyes or censors or whatever they are remind me of a spider, maybe it would fit with making him have 4 to 8 legs, that might be cool but harder to animate.

Thank you for commenting. There actually isnt any textures on it yet. Only material setting so far.

I was thinking something along the lines of multiple arms but didnt want it to be too obvious. I liked the multi-sensors just because I recently made a spider for the insect speed modeling session.
So, I am making some really long and thin service/repair arms the fold up and tuck away. Thats why there is so much open room between the arms and torso.

Great work!
Amazing!

Hey, this is awesome! great model, and very sweet render.
I can't wait to see what you come up with for his lower half.

Personaly I wouldn't give him spider legs, but thats just me.

Suggestion: The shoulder shrouds could be cuved and sleek like the rest of his body, instead of sticking strait out.

Thanks. =) Yeah, I totally agree..it does catch the eye a little too much..though I have been looking at this thing for a long time. I can't curve it down or else the arms range of motion will lessen but I can raise the dock covers to help it. I'll edit it so we can see.

Thanks

This is really a neat wip.

One thing to keep in mind, is the human interface methods. Fabrication and maintence will leave thier scars. Bolts, panels, shouds, etc., are needed to hold the guy together, as well as maintain/upgrade/repair the 'bot. I like the way you're going with him though.

The chest piece is bugging me a bit, in that the suedo-pectoral plate lacks definition and flow.

Keep at it, this could be realy cool. What's his method of locomotion going to be?

Good work. Quick quetion how many years expiriance you got in modeling?

A hover unit which has been giving me a hard time trying to design something that flows well and seems probable. I too have been itching to pick apart the chest plate. I was also told by a buddy of mine to show construction. I will see what I can do and yet still maintain a clean look.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I appreciate it. I am sure you all know it is good to see a design trough new eyes. Especially when mine are jaded.

This is a cool little project! I can appreciate the thought that goes into designing a piece such as this. Your model and concept look like something that would fit well into a challenge on www.threedy.com. The prize is a BOXX machine. I wish I could do it but I have no time! Anyway, the critique that I would have for this would be the notches in the arms, right around the bicep area. I those bumps in the model interrupt the flow to your design. Maybe consider making them less intrusive. As you go through the modeling process though, you'll find that your design changes a bit. Good luck and I'll keep an eye on this one!!

Yeah, thats so he can rotate his arm. Thank you for pointing that out. Can't do the threedy comp though..started Jan 23. =C Thank you for that though.

Just to clarify what I was talking about......these bumps help the arm to rotate? Maybe I'm not understanding right.....

So you started this model before Jan 23?? If not, you can use it still in the challenge I think....you would just need some 2D art to post first.

Great model, strange shader.
I really would like to see a rust one.

Mahlikus

NO rust..bad rust..besides. vitreloy never rusts or tarnishes. lol Just in case anyone was curious though...I am not making this up..here is a brief explination of vitreloy (http://www.virtuallystrange.net/ufo/updates/1998/sep/m03-005.shtml)
As for the shader..yeah, it doesnt belong..its a car silver flake underpaint test...just stayed on him is all.
OH THOSE BUMPS!
nevermind...I understand and see what you mean too. I did that to match the peaks on the head, neck and arm tips...doesn't work hu?

You know what, maybe it's ok. It's good to have a little style to a model. Just keep going and see how it feels to you. I'll keep watching.....

I know exactly what I'll do...*wink wink, big grin*
