View Full Version : Beast Of Burden - Character(s) - AJ_23
Here's a quick (and rather astoudingly poor) photoshop sketch of what I want to create for this challenge should I find the time... basically trying to put my idea down before anyone else has a similar one! :p
It's a camel... of sorts...

Hmm - after mulling it over today, I think I might scrap the camel.
The modelling won't be anything complicated, I can't think of any trinkets to put on it, it wouldn't have a harness and it's expression would've been "horror" (which isn't in the guidelines sadly).... so it pretty much fails all round! :hmm: :D
Bugger.
Oh well - back to the drawing board... literally!
Thanks for the comments guys!

Aw, too bad..I dug him..had strange visions of nomadic tribes of desert tuglets or something :D
Look forward to seeing what else you come up with tho :)
I really need to dig out my scanner if concept art's gonna be a regular...
My Photoshop 'drawing' skills aren't quite up to my 'holding a pencil and banging it out in 5 minutes' skills - the results are, well painful.
I completey apologise for the spasmodic scribbling that this is - I really hope the model is better... :hmm:
So - Here's my *NEW* concept.
Think Spherical
Think Cow
Think Bike
(Actually don't think Bike - I just got carried away on a twisted memory of Jimmy Hill there).
The feet need more thinking... and a pencil and paper)
Ahem - for your viewing *cough* 'pleasure', I present
The Round Cow
:surprised

hehe:) :bounce:
Okay, well actually got around to fiddling with Max for a couple of hours the last two evenings, so this is where I am so far.
It's still too 'cow' and not enough 'odd' - but I'm working on it. Areas like the nose/ears need tweaking and of course, the (seemingly) obligatory levels of detail... ;)
Will play with more, then it's on to his enormous spherical arse! Hooray! :D
Crits and comments as always are more than welcome...
(Promis I'm not just post bumping - I genuinely forget to post a wire shot!)
Moo...

post bumping eh? :shame: tsk tsk tsk ;)
j/k - I couldn't care less even if you were.
crits-
not many of those. Maybe if you move his ears higher up his head. Like in the sketch.
He's also got balance issues IMO
keep it up

LOL when I saw the drawing you had made for your new BoB I was like: "c'mon AJ...you can do better than that". And then I saw the 3D head and said out loud "oh crap that's pretty dam sweet". I really like the expression on its face. It looks like me when I'm sitting on the toilet ;) hehehe (jk)
Seriously, very nice work so far on the head.

HAHAH This is great! Love the teeth!
Not really gotten much done in the last week - but had a few free hours tonight ("A few free hours - brought to you by 'Crap Sunday Night Television'...") so played around with Mr Cow some more.
Started roughing out the legs - obviously need a lot of refinement (and of course feet)
It's crap - it's not really much... but thought I'd share where I am so far..
And a little more playing... I sadly comitted one of my pet peeves on this one - I didn't weld the model together before I hit PrintScreen :annoyed: (It only takes 10 seconds to do and it always bugs me when people show unwelded models... but in this case I am that person. Sorry.)
Gratuitous Arse Shot :surprised

Love the expression on his face, your teeth are consistently distinctive, I really dig the style. :xtreme:
Have to agree on the balance issue though, won't he find it hard not to topple over?
(What with the walking and the running and the toppling, wha-hey-huaey! - he says mimicking Prof. Frink for those wondering what on earth I'm on about)
Found some time to fiddle about with this guy a little more - not a great deal of progress to show... but at least his head's finally caught up with his arse (so to speak) :p
The feet are just rough stand-ins and the 'harness' is of course just a basic shape for the moment.
Hope to have his arms, feet, harness and (dan-da-dum-dum) owner done over the up and coming days. Although I also hope for an endless bowl of twix's and kit-kats, so it may not happen... :D

Q:
What do you call a two legged, pot-bellied cow?
A:
An UDDER-ly cool beast of burden!
:p :p
Oh please... I hate being the butt of everyone's jokes...
So cud we just moove on - I heffer headache.
:p :p :p :D
(god that's poor - I'm sorry...)
Just a little unsmoothed wf that I forgot to post, will get cracking on the details right away!
finally an update, was waiting for one to see what would come about your sketches, I didnt think the arse was enough to say "HEY GREAT JOB!" ha, a little sarcasm, but anyhow, nice and clean model, good body structure, great so far, keep the updating bud, this thing is starting to come to its own.. What app you using, saw your last challenge and it was fantastico! Keep it coming... :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Thanks for the very kind comments Shaun! :D
I really regret posting that bloody awful photoshop doodle - I would've preferred a sort of 'guess what this is' kinda thread. Curse those bloody guidelines! ;)
I'm using Max 4.2 with the obligatory meshtools/CSpolytools. Last challenge was also done in Max - with a little bit of Rhino chucked in.
Started fleshing out his arms - but not really enough to get feedback on (says a man who posted a GL grab of two buttocks... ahem), but will post some piccys tomorrow.
C&C's are always more than welcome (although with this amount of entrants - it's pretty hard!) :D

thats comming along really nice! great character and nice and clean modeling:)
Well - not much of an update here (could the admins write a script so that all my posts start of with thos words?) :p
Just fleshing out some arms and a couple of little details - been working on the owner too, but nothing showable yet (apart from his chair for the eagle eyed viewers among you).
Feet are still arse, will work on some proper ones. Oh and some hands. And a better harness... and some straps. Erm, and the owner. And - oh just everything.
Moo!

LOL AJ, that's a good update. The arms are tied into the body very well. I didn't realize the cow-beast was going to be so huge (looking at the little chair on the harness yolk). I might consider making the rider a bit larger than that.
Nother couple of views - really just an excuse to get his fat behind in :p - ant to show that I'm toying with the idea of a nose ring... Do people think good? Or Bad?
(Oh, the tails just an inclination at the moment)
MOOOOOO!
It's not the cow who is big - but the owner who is small... :D
(hopefully it will work better when they're together!)
But saying that - I think you're right, the chair is pretty small - I'll make it bigger.
Cheers
:D
he's never gonna be able to handle the shovel necessary for an arse that big ;)
hey bud,
you came this far, I really hope you end up finishing this thing, its really a great piece you have there. I was wonderig something about your lighting setup for I notice you have great lights with your work. Do you use a rendering program, or is everything done with Max render?? Love to know how you go about those setups! anyhow. Get back to work! only so many hours left..

Really superb character AJ_23!
Nose ring works very well. You'd better finish this model, or POW!:wip:
Thanks for the comments guys :D - really really appreciate it.
I'm not going to have time to finish this one to the level I'd have liked to for the deadline, so I'm withdrawing my entry. I read the deadline wrong and thought I had till the 14th (Doh!) - bugger.
TheSEL: 99% of the time I use max's standard renderer (as I did in the last challenge), but for these renders, I thought I'd better jump on the GI wagon - they're rendered in Vray with one light and a bit of lovely bounce :bounce:
I'll keep playing with the model, so look out for some updates in the WIP section of the galleries ;)
Thanks - and good luck to all!
