Ok, well, since I can't whip out the 2D as fast, but had a notion in my head, here's a rough idea of the shape and size I'm trying for. Not necessarily insectoid, but have to see how it goes. Will try and rough out more and get more of an idea together to crit. Let me know what you think. (oh and yeah, the little block is human size, if that's not evident)

Hope to go all the way with this one, maybe post/read less and tinker more..450..jeez. :D

Had an idea for the head..here's a rough, and how it would fit in with the body..have a general idea for the whole look now, but just throwing out bits and pieces and seeing what works.

woke up again, tinkered some..a little more definition..

Ok, a little attention to the rig, and some backstory..damn caffiene :)

Basic idea is post-industrial, post-apocalypse, post-something. (maybe just a coincidence me wishing I had gotten into the PA). This is a long range, long term scavenging operation, looking for useful bits or whole vehicles between outposts. Power can still be generated and stored via solar, but not a lot, and fuel is a premium, so gone to 'creature power' for a lot of things. The rig itself can run the basics and the crane when needed, but not the huge motors in each wheel.

Might try making the scale bigger, but I think at the current size there's going to be a lot of details needed as it is, so might work okay. Does that all seem reasonable, if not plausible, as a setup for this thing and its burden?

you have no idea how glad I am that someone went crazy with multiple legs. :) this guy is shaping up nicely.

Hey, thanks! I forgot to look in my own thread down here in the south forty :)

Figured it would be cool/different and make for some interesting locomotion..and a really complex harness..

Figuring all that out now, I think..more soon..

Ah nice the first multi leg beast... what I'm really interested in, is how you'll pull of the emotion ;)

hehehe
Well 'cube it just goes to show that great minds think alike. Our two BoB's could exist in the same universe. LOL

I like your creature, but is it going to be more insect-like or mamal-like. I see traits of both in your design, it looks like you could go either way with it. I like that.

Good stuff so far.

Just got back from 4th stuff..whoop. Fireworks look really interesting at different shutter speeds, under different influences :)

Thanks for the comments guys!

@ZrO-1: haha, yeah, multilegs unite! I think I'm skewing a little more mammal in new bits, but I'm going to see if I can ride the line as much as possible..trying for that sort of unfathomable feng/sci-fi phylum, I hope :)

@lildragon: hmm yes, that should be interesting, shouldn't it :D

@Equinoxx: your guy would def. look wicked with more eyes

Thanks again for the encouragement..gonna do my best to keep rollin'.

Ok, cause of the holiday and relatives in town, haven't had any time for my beastie (excuses, excuses) but I did get some more in..refining the head and roughing in the command/control..

Trying out some different designs for the shell/hump. Still not sure if I want it to be hard material or not..

There's the jumbo shrimp / curlbug:

http://www.hyper3fx.com/projx/cgc/beast/Shell_JumboShrimp.jpg

Or the megaturtle:

http://www.hyper3fx.com/projx/cgc/beast/Shell_TMNT.jpg

And maybe the rock lobster:

http://www.hyper3fx.com/projx/cgc/beast/Shell_RockLobster.jpg

Have some other ideas but these were the ones I'm aiming at..let me know what you think! I'm open to other weirder/cooler suggestions, too..you guys are always great for that :D

P.S. Keep in mind these are VERY rough! I'd of course detail it out properly.. anyway, back at it.. :wip:

07-06-2002, 11:50 PM
Ah, that'd be cool..still freaky but different enough, I think it could be cool if it covered the back legs slightly too..plus something I didn't think about, if I keep the seams smaller it'll help the impression of scale. Stuff to think about..hmmm.

Thanks!

Great head - with so many legs do they have to be so thick? If they were just a bit thiner and revealed some flexing muscle it might be just the thing to show some straining. Either way some defintion in the joints and sagging flesh is the way to go ;) Keep rocking!

see you,

Rock Lobster, Definitely. I also love the beginning of your harness.

one crit: It seems like yopur creature has an exoskeleton. unlike the BoB's with a skeleton on the inside, it would be nice to see some sharper creases on the model. just my thoughts...

Hmmm, good point..I'm almost to an update so will see how it's working now, but kind of unsure about the outer surface..thinking porpoiselike on the head, elephant-turtle on the legs..tough to mix hard/soft like that, it's a rather mixed up creature. Let me get some more changes in and see what you think. :)

07-14-2002, 02:07 AM
Aha!! Multiples legs rules!!! Cool .
Yep i think the mammal way is much more original for a multy legs bobs. About the shell look some other armored mamals like tatoos, armadillo, etc..mmm let's seee...........

Here is one

rickycox
07-14-2002, 02:27 AM
maybe too many legs?? the thick legs give it a cute kind of look. I don't know?? I like the peircings around the lips. Keep going

hypercube
07-14-2002, 09:27 PM
Thanks again for the replies.. I think if I can get a more 'leathery' armadillo surface on the shell once I get to bump maps, that'll be a good way to go..and I am concerned about it looking 'cute'..will have to see how it goes. Farley's earlier comment about the legs is coming home to roost as well..working on it.

Ok, on to the update, if you can call it one..as I've been lamenting, I have had no time at all to work on this guy, and it looks like I may have less time coming up..but I did get a little in yesterday, so here goes:

http://www.hyper3fx.com/projx/cgc/beast/Render_2.jpg
http://www.hyper3fx.com/projx/cgc/beast/Render_1.jpg

Mainly just some more leg definition (no in the end they won't all be cheap clones of each other!), refined shell/back-thing, less of a hardness to it, and have started in with some harness pieces. Now for the "wtf are those things?", I'm imagining that since they salvage, they've found some cool bits of air and spacecraft that are made of exotic strong materials..they can't really shape them, but they can use them, so they still look like o-rings and misc. These are mixed together with parts they could get made.

Here's a kindergarten style paintover to show the rigging:

http://www.hyper3fx.com/projx/cgc/beast/harnesslines_diagram.jpg

The green lines represent cables and wires(think like on a bridge instead of rope), the orange lines represent the lines pulling at the 'bit' on its mandibles (I'd actually like to have them go through a pulley system back at the vehicle, since they should need quite a lot of mechanical advantage). The little filled in sections will be canvas and/or solar panels. May add some.

This is getting long, so I'll shut up..let me know what you think! Crits, Ideas, Suggestions, Phone numbers of beautiful women, all appreciated.

07-14-2002, 09:54 PM
That rigging looks great! Just make sure it doesn't get too cluttered. You don't want to lose the beautiful simplicity of the beast. Then again, you've done a fantastic job so far, so a huge bunch of wire-work may turn out to be amazing!

07-14-2002, 11:15 PM
the last update is really great!

I'm not sure about his face expression......I know it's hard with 4 eyes and without eyelids, but I think if you would open his moth and show some teeth he would look more agressive

just one thing....you said kindergarten style paintover, and you are from LA, and I'm wondering because kindergarten is a german word?! do you really say kindergarten? :D

toxichimp
07-14-2002, 11:35 PM
I agree with erilaz :D On the one hand small wires will make it give even more of that huge feeling, but that might hurt the simplicity that gives it that certain style.

As for the model so far, think it looks great :) Really like the size of the thing aswell. Hope you'll make an animation with this, would be really cool to see it moving.

l_farley13_l
07-14-2002, 11:54 PM
For the face - a drooping lip and most of the expression could come through the eyes - where the pupil is looking - any plans for a lid?

Legs are looking much better - final move would be some bumpmaps to show the elephant like folds etc. (think right where they attach especially). The sagging is good.

http://www.liv.ac.uk/~sdb/Safari/Images/405%20Elephant.jpg
http://www.liv.ac.uk/~sdb/Safari/Images/447%20Baby%20Elephant.jpg

Just to give it that extra softness/wear and tear.

Also, one less leg might work to uncramp the sides, and show detail. Can't wait for the rigging structure - should add some nice detail.

Cool! I didn't read all posts so I don't know if someone said this---maybe the creature needs some damage to it's toenails and feet to show wear and tear, and possibly damage where a loop has torn away from the skin and been replaced. I suppose scars and such could be added with textures later and they wouldn't count towards the challenge, but they'd be damn cool. OK, I've rambled enough--excellent work!

yo 'cube, great stuff man! I love the idea of using 'found' items for parts of the harness. i also like the 'mass of cables' idea.
The legs are coming along well. i like the thickness to them, but I have one suggestion: try removing one pair of legs and spacing out the rest to compensate. I like the multi-leg idea, I just think you might have one pair too many in there.

Just my 2 cents.

the size of that thing!!!! It looks amazingly powerfull!!my only comment is for the chariot If I where you, i would remove the weels.. this beast could pull mountains!!

Great point fromPascal. If youve got a beast of this size, then make it work:wip: Romove the wheels and slide in a sled underneith Id recommend. I thought about this a bit for ine to...If you want a real beast it has to have really worked hard...and a contraption with wheels wouldnt have the smae strain on the beaast as one without.

Overall, very cool. Love the size.

hypercube
07-16-2002, 12:18 AM
Wow is right! Lots of great replies! Thanks everyone!

Looks like 10 legs is definitely it..it just feels better..originally I was thinking of making the 'back six' much smaller, but that seemed off. I thought I'd have trouble with there being an 'extra' segment after removing a pair (ouch), but since there's the other in the front I can balance it out without messing up the shape.. Good call guys.

Definitely gonna try for roughed up elephant style bump map..really like the idea of 'story scars' as well, assuming I can get to all of this of course :hmm:

On the burden, I think you're right, it's probably too little effort to move with the big wheels..not sure a sled would fit the idea tho..will have to think of stuff. I like the idea of a massive burden to match the size. I'm glad he comes off as powerful though :)

Anyway, I should quit yappin' and go to buildin' while I have time. Thanks again.

07-16-2002, 01:06 AM
:hmm: Did I miss something??? In the last pics I can see the beast still has 6 legs per side. When did you try my suggestion and remove a pair?

Can I see it? Can I see it now? What about now? Will you please let me see it? c'mon, please let me see it? :D hehehe

For real though is there a pic missing or something?

hypercube
07-16-2002, 01:10 AM
hah, doh..no, no pic yet..still confusticating the underside around a little to make it fit, and trying to work in a few more improvements..so, no, your eyes aren't playing tricks.. I can do a screengrab in a few tho :D

P.S. Forgot, yes we do say kindergarten, it's preschool here, like before grade 1 :)

07-16-2002, 03:41 AM
Maybe instead of taking the wheels off you could add some things dragging behind the cart--very heavy things, like another beast that's dead, or extra wheels or cart parts or misc junk found along the way--I know, I'm blabbing. Just a thought.:)

Sorry guys, now I feel extra schmucky, but just got completely snowed under with projects happening at the same time, and even today have stuff I have due for tomorrow, so I'm dead..  Not sure if it's a blessing or a curse, every time I enter I magically end up with piles of stuff to do. :p

However unlike the last challenge entry, this thing definitely has merit, I'm not going to let this one go, so hopefully if everyone isn't BOB-ed out in a couple weeks it'll rear its ugly head in the WIP section. :) I'd just rather continue and finish it properly than half-ass it during the few hours left. Do or Do Not, as the saying goes. Sorry for compromising.

Thanks again for all the great help, suggestions, and encouragement..will incorporate all of it..I'll be back..

Wowsers! Must make bigger! leggier! Love that the legs form an angle towards the back! the whole body forming the shape of a shield. Looks enormously armored and powerful! :xtreme: Its got to move something obnoxiusly big! :) like that huge machine that roll out the space shuttle to the pad.

Even though the thread's down in the doldrums here, thought I'd answer..thanks a lot guys! Definitely will keep it going..I can see the trap though, this month's challenge is so tempting too

@ ila_solomon: wow, you put me in some great company there..I really love the way yours came out, you have a great style. I missed commenting in both you and pearson's threads..good stuff.

@ pearson: yeah I'm in the wild and wooly freelance world, had a steady yet occasionally stupid gig for a while, then they got bought out, and the whole thing went in the dumper, if only I had gotten into the challenges then :)

@ raven: finally got ya to join up eh..no armchair quarterbacking, you gotta get that wrapper off and join one of these yourself :p

@ zen: thanks again! Actually a big tredded vehicle like that would be awesome..you've just given me some ideas..long as I can keep it from becoming the jawa crawler..hmmmm.

Anyway, just wanted to answer..onward and sideways to the WIP..
