I mistakenly made the exact same post to the Gallery/Finished Work part of the forum :(

I'm sorry about that. I don't even know if we're allowed to post 2D over there (please PM me if I'm violating the norms here)

"Self- Portrait or On the gender of angels and red vegetables"

Zbrush 1.23 and Photoshop 5.5

It was just a period of my life when I disliked fantasy cliches.

also, why bother about the gender of angels? aren't there enough to do to help the world here on the mortal plane? what strange impulses cause us to need help from above?

the carrot is a classical phallic symbol. (Sigmund Freud again, I'm afraid). Perhaps I should tell my psychiatry professor at Med school to give it a rest...

hope my comments, though uncalled-for, aren't unwanted here.

Really, really nice technique. I would almost like to see some of the glow coming off her face to reflect on the wings, but that's really minor.
Your web page is really cool too. Good job!:applause:

good picture! which parts of it are made with zbrush?

i like the strange thoughts behind it. the background looks very natural-media styled. thank you for posting it here.

thanks for liking it

at that time, I didn't have a stylus, so Zbrush's feature to change the size of custom-tip brushes (called alpha brushes) was very helpful in emulating an oil-looking effect.

the effect I used in photoshop for the same purpose was setting a brush fade to 10-30 steps, so my stroke actually looked like a brush that fades to dry as I paint on my canvas.

I rarely use Zbrush as a modeller, but I did make use of its very memory-cheap smudge tool. all in all, it's a 2D painting, which kept me busy for about 2 months - along with some others.

two months? that's a load of work, eh?
what was the most difficult part of it?

the individual wings on the feathers, and making his/her face look like mine, were the most difficult, sad.

and I quite honestly hope it shows ;)

also, I have a thing for saturated paintings. now saturated colours are a bitch to make work together, so a lot of work had to go in there too.

it was an ambitious painting at that time. now I hope I'm a little better.

thank you for the interest!
