Iīd like some directions where to look for info if someone knows about this. I have had no luck at some Macforums as well as the Apple site.

For shows, I am doing films/animations for, very large movies are made. Typically HDTV format on up to 12 separate screens. These films as played on separate G5īs for each screen.

And, I am a little puzzled. Using a G52x2 1.5GRam and the 9600Pro and 9800Pro card. The speed of the SATAdiscs are about 40-46 Mb/s when copying files between them.

However, using QuickTime just checking my work, there is no chance to get smooth playback if the movies are not under 6Mb/s. It doesnīt matter what codec (or non) I use. MotionJpegA-medium beeing the "best" thu.

Filevault is not activated.

Is this really the case? G5īs not doing "better" than this?

Cheers

sounds like a probelm with your specific system cause when I saw a demo of the G5 and asked about pixlet they played a movie that was 80 megs and it played flawlessly (not to mention its quality was amazing, gotta get me a mac with pixlet and FCP, don't need it for anythng other then that but that alone would be worth it.)

Was that 80Mb/s? The thing is I have tried it with different G5īs and the result is the same...

Iīll see if FCP do it better than OT. But isnīt it the same engine (QT)?
Pixlet is rather good but MotionJpegA does often have better result size/performance/quality wise for playback. Pixlet , I think, is more of an discspace saver. Getting the forth of the size with allmost original quality.

Thanks

Yeah I wasn't focusing on play back in terms of the codec. Whats its for transporting lossless movies with a manageable file size, and no it wasn't 80mb/s the file was 80mb but was only like 5 minutes long or something like that (only watched about 30 seconds as there were other things to cover.)

so it was around15-16 mb/s

OK. The tests I have done are at 1920x1080.
However using regular PAL720x576 and the Animation codec, I do get smooth playback a 25f/s and 25-30Mb/s. Playing a second movie from the other internal disc , it does -also- play smooth. So the G5 then handles about 50Mb/s w/o problems.

So it seems the amount of pixels is what make the G5 choke. This I find strange, I thought only the amount of data was relevant.

As a side note, starting a third movie, from a Firewire 400 disc, totaly destroys all playback.
Even if only one of the first movies are playing, so there is another cullprit.

Cheers
