Hello, the film continues on to be made in my spare time, I decided to texture each scene and have a stab at colour, a thing I haven't attempted to do a lot of so far in 3d.

Looks good.
I really like the soft focus stuff and typography. Are you going to keep us up to date with this project on your site?
What's that BA course like over there in Cumbria?
ps: the url on th your imagery gives a 404 error.

there are plans for a rocketman 2 website to be done soon,
Cumbria Institute of the Arts
Right I gotto be careful here,
It - was/is - very much a course that - was/still is - evolving.
the thing you have to understand when you go there is that they’re teaching you from scratch, 8 programs, Cinema 4d is only one of those in year 1.
year 2 is group orientated, and they start teaching you the programming language lingo. In these groups you are ment to be ideally be doing what you are good at, but this is all down to how well the group is organised itself.
year 3 you decide wiether you want to go it alone for your final major project or collaborate again
Year 1
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Maxon Cinema 4d
Macromedia Director - animation
Year 2
Adobe Premiere
Adobe After Effects
Macromedia Director - lingo
Softimage XSI
Optional
Macromedia Flash
Macromedia Dreamweaver
Year 3
Final Major Project
you decide weither you want to do a Animation, Cd Rom or Website
Now would be a good time to go because they’ve just upgraded their computers
did I enjoy my time there?
I fell in love with Cinema 4d there and that was a good thing,
I came from the small town of Dumfries, and Carlisle to me was a bit bigger and a lot better on the pub scene than Dumfries, but people form the big citys found it very small and whinged a bit about it…
401 error, I don’t know what that is, might be a bandwidth problem...
Flingster dude
thanks man, yeah that was a typo there, I meant to say morale, yep,

sounds like a cool course....BUT like the "still evolving" bit...
sounds so familiar to institutions the length and breadth of the country. whether its the continued commercialisaton of education i don't know and kinda a political point i'd like to steer clear of...would be curious as to our american colleagues take on that i guess.

Mmmm...
I'm less intersted in the software and more in the theories like storytelling, cinematography, ui design.
I've still to find a decent course that gives presedence to these over learning software.
Mind, it would prob need to be OU now as I'm self employed!
Carlisle's not too bad (as long as you're just passing through!) :D
404 error means it couldn't find the page
I'm going to this address:

Firstly, of the four I would say that the semi-lit globe version of the poster is the best. It is extremely atmospheric and adds a dash of intrigue to the subject matter. Personally, I would be keen to find out more if I saw this poster hanging in my local UGC or Virgin Cinema. Well executed too.
Now, from a purely advertising / graphic point of view I think it has some flaws.
1. You say at the top "a michael j dowswell film - rocketman 2" and then proceed to duplicate that exact same information at the bottom. if you are going to do this at least knock the point size down a bit on the lower strapline. At the moment, it has almost as much impact as the title information. You have an unwanted conflict there.
2. "Music by Wagner, Tchaikovsky". To me, this makes it sound as if these composers produced music specifically for this film or you have at least used contemporary music by a leading artist of the day. This may work with movies such as The Matrix or Daredevil or Underworld where current artists' works are used as promotional pieces for the movie but here you are using music by people who have been dead for more than 100 years simply so that you don't have to pay a usage fee. I don't think you need to say this at all. If you look at the original posters for 2001 A Space Odyssey there was absolutely no mention of the use of classic music by Strauss. It was a fundamental part of one section of the movie but was never highlighted in the films promotion.
I hope I'm not sounding too harsh because I generally love what you've done. It looks great and I'm looking forward to seeing the final piece. Just thought I'd throw in my initial thoughts.

it was a frustrating course at times, but I don’t regret doing it.
IanMJ
yep, im afraid if you want to be taught storytelling and cinematography its not the place to go to…
but ive always said to people you either have the eye for it or you don’t, it can be sort of taught (cinematography/composition/layout) I think it helps to be a movie nut, examining the well shot films...one of the finest examples of cinematography/storytelling for me I say is Luc Bessons “Leon”
404 error
yep, the site hasn’t been made yet, I should have uploaded a html page and piccie really before uploading these posters. it’ll happen soon though…

no its cool man, its great to hear everyone's opinion, its so so nice when people speak their mind on it, and do the full on constructive crit thing, I agree the bottom text should be smaller, it is a bit too big, though hmm, yeah I’d have to see it smaller really to say, I do like nice clear text though, Its very much following a film poster convention where the director does have their name on it three times, but I do agree its mabie a bit much / is a bit much…because of it being a solo project, yep
difficult to write this next bit...
yeah, I really really feel that 50% of this film is driven / hinging on myself listening and then using the contemporary music of Wagner and Tchaikovsky, that’s why I wanted to have their names there.
I feel that because it is a silent movie...yep I really want / still want to have their names there. but I do agree the pieces of music are things that have been written staged for opera /theatre production and it is taking music from a previous project as it were and not written specifically for my animation, I do see what your saying and do agree with you.
thanks
