Use paint effect!

that is a good and easy way to make it

well, paint effects look good for the most of the beginners. but if you've worked with them it's pain. i know a lot of people putting a gun to their head then they worked with them. :)

so i tried to use fur for this task a while ago. sure it's not without problems but still better to control etc as paint effects. and no renderproblems etc.

Yeah, I needed some grass for a small banner I did a long time ago, and Maya fur worked just fine for it! Just tweaked out the settings 'till it looked somewhat good, and then did the final touch ups in Photoshop.

Here's it, nothing fancy:
Edit: And it's only the lower right corner which is CG, the else is an image ;) :p

Question: Could fur be turned into geometry? And if it could, would this be faster than having Maya calculate the fur for each frame? I saw an Lightwave image a while back of a "lizard-king" kinda guy, and he had a coat with quills made of geometry that were Sasquatch hair turned into geometry. Could Maya pull this off, and would it be worth while?
