i'm sorry i can't give you any advice on rendering hair, but according to the sketch you provided (which is damn sexy!), there are a few inconsistencies in her face.
you seemed to have 'streamlined' the nose quite a bit; her nose looks wider and fuller in the sketch. you've also made the bridge of her nose too curved, it looks like she has a sort of 'button nose' in the sketch.
there are a couple things wrong with her lips; they don't seem to decrease in perspective, and they're look out of place. her lips don't seem to line up at the center of her face like on the sketch.
her left eye is not on the same level as her right; it might seem like it should be higher, but it should be rendered on the same level, just a little bigger due to perspective. just look at the eyebrows in the sketch; they're on the same level.
did i mention i love that sketch! that's one fine 'special someone'!

[edit] actually i have seen a bunch of hair-painting tutorials at 3d Total. here's the link:www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/tutorialsdigipaint.asp

it has changed a lot from the sketch, but im also looking at the photo at the same time so i've been cleaning the mistakes of the sketch by looking at that photo. i'll try to fix some symatry issuses. i think the lips look out of place because of the chin it might be to large or maybe shadow around it will make it seem smaller. i have to ask her if it will be ok to show the pic (refernece)

the eyes are at the same level as the sketch but i your completely right about the eyebrows they are not on the right level

thank u for your comments

well sorry for the late update but i had no time to finish this up until recently. my girl loves it, so not to much critiques came from her, except for positives.

im going to post this in the final section too. so here goes the final of my girl amber.

Hi, the pic looks good, but theres something wrong with her mouth I think, it looks like its on another perspective-line than the rest of the face...
Also, the nose seems too blurry, and I don't think the white in her eyes would go that far towards her nosebridge, there's usually some red muscle bits in there, especially with these orientalstyle eyes.
The hair looks like it should have some more highlight, but Im not sure..
Good job on the rest thou, Im sure your GF's happy about it :)

Hi again, this looks much better to me.
The middle part of the lip looks like it's bent to the left thou, and there's a line on the neck that looks like a scar or something..?
Other than that, I cant find anything.
Great job!

HI. I think the lips are somehow wrong... And I would correct nose(but it is mine opinion, i like smaller noses:>) I do some retouch on your paint, hope that you re not angry...

I would also turn lips a few degree clockwise, but I dont have PS now on my PC, and I'm just beginning with Painter, so i dont know how to do that:)

nope, i'll stick to the nose i have. she's a light skinned black girl her pretty nose looks like the one i already have.

Looks great specs44. I would add a little more depth and curvature to the white in her eyes. Right now it looks a bit too cartoonish and flat. Keep in mind that the eye is a sphere. The overall shape of the eyes are great but in the corner near the nose there should be red stuff, not white. Check your mirror for detail.

Would love to see some eyelashes too.

On the whole, great work.

i am sorry, but you have GOT to do something about those eyes. you have this beautiful piece, where the detail is great and specific, but the focus of this painting is in the eyes. they are the gate way to the soul. the is just no detail. make them round by putting shadding and deminsion aorund the eyes with the lip of the eye.

other than that, it si great, just do something about those eyes.

happy trials!

final update
looks like u used Amerie as the ref. model. it looks more like her in the 1st WIP image. but u did a good job on her face. The only problem is the hair, there are no real shortcuts when painting hair except practice. It used to take me a long time to get hair the way i wanted it in Photoshop only so I started to use Painter 8 to assist me with it, I use the blender tools in Painter to help spread, shape and contour the hair and I use highlights in PS to accentuate and bring the hair to life.

if you'd look at the first few posts, you realized that it's a painting of his girlfriend, buddy.

actually i think you're right, spec; you should leave the picture alone. your last update was good. the mouth placement is a lot better. the nose matches the original sketch (which was awesome, by the way :) ). it's obvious that you don't want to get too indepth with changes, so you might as well leave it.
although working on the highlights in the hair wouldn't screw anything else up. so maybe you could do that.
great piece overall.

i was trying to make her look like the pic, the white on the eyes had some dimension but i guess more contrast needed to be added so i did that. the eyelashes really aren't shown like that in the pic to be really adding any at all its eyeliner but i satill added a little coming out. i softened the neck shadow a bit
i added a touch of red to the eyes.

but thank u all for the comments and critiques.
yeah this isn't anmerie, i wonder how she'll take that comment.
