I'm working on a project that takes place in a forest. I want to have beams of light breaking through the forest canopy, kind of like through a church window, or between clouds, very angelic. If anyone has any ideas on how to achieve this effect I would appreciate it.

What usually works for me is placing a spot light (least expensive to render) and activate your fog effect attribute under the lights Effects tab. When this is activated, you will then be given a cone shaped manipulator which can be scaled like regular geometry to encompass your scene. One important factor is to enable your shadowing on your light, if this isn't done you will get a fog effect thats not responsive to geometry. After this is done you can play with your Fog Density to achieve the level of thickness you'd like your scene to have.

You can also utilize raytraced shadows (longer renders) for any stain-glassed windows you may have.(Ray-traced obeys color rays in transparent objects) I know many TD's want this as a post process in Shake or other programs, but try adding some glow into your shaders. . .will help give that dreamy, warm mood you maybe shooting for. Don't know what your production pipeline is, but I wish you the best of luck. Hope this helps and makes sense.

Yup as said above, but turn on depth map shadows and add a few bits of geometry to make a gobo or cookie (use your nomenclatre of choice) to make shafts of light as if coming through the canopy.
