this is my first attempt to model a car. i used the tamiya model kit as reference.

all modeling an texturing was done in maya and with standard maya renderer.

hey cool model, very nice.
only thing that bothers me is the front wheel seems a little flat and too close to the fender top, I could be wrong.

Nice work, I like the whole thing. But I agree with Idi. Your photoshop fix is better than the first render, but doesnt adress the hight issue. I like the particially flat look of the tyres, gives the scene realism, but they are riding too high. Maybe reduce the overall size of the rim and tyre combo. The alternative; raising the car up, probably wouldnt be as good an idea, being as its a race car and all and is supposed to be lowered.

always thought it's not possible to get such a good render quality with the maya renderer - great job!!!

it was my aim to do everything with "old school stuff" :)
i lit the scene with a light dome of directional lights that i created from a hdri map in hdrshop. most reflections are from standard environment maps except the self reflections.

a wireframe will follow soon

Nice job, do a little something more with the environment and it would look better IMO. Tight modeling, very good materials--this is a popular car, there is another 1 posted a few threads up from where I found this 1;) Great work, fine tune it:beer:

great model/composition... i'm an NSX fan and my ex-roommate has one... sexy cars.

did you know the body kit on that car (Marga Hills) is a $14,000 body kit alone? craziness.

Perfect modeling, great texturing, AWESOME lighting/compositing, it looks like a photo. Glad to see you didn't use GI to achieve such an amazing aspect!

Outstanding model!

I would suggest adding some film grain to the composite. And maybe some very slight motion or general blur to the overall car just to defocus it slightly.

either the background or the car needs motion blur because if the car is moving, either the camera was tracking the car or it was stationary when the car passed. If the camera was tracking the car (which is more likely) then the background needs major blurring.

hi and tanks for all your answers. you are right. the composite doesn't match perfectly. maybe i'll adjust it a bit.
i think the photographer used a very short exposure time. because of that the motion blur of the car is very low.
i found the image at http://www.rosso-f1.com/ and comped my honda of a ferrari. :p

i tried to use mental ray, but never got the depth map shadows working right. they look very blocky. if anybody knows a sollution i would be happy if he shares it with us

here is a correct wireframe shot. the other had display problems where one could think that there are polygons with more then four vertexes.. or was it verticies?
does anybody know the correct plural of vertex?

Sometimes a problem with shadow maps is that there is not enough "memory" allocated to them. If that's the case then you will get "blocky" results. Find the tab where you can bump this up and you should see better results.

Jeremy Birn covers that exact thing in his Digital Lighting and Rendering Book. Which I highly recommend.:thumbsup:

I hate you... only cuz I'm jealous at your talent :D Seriously great work.... Wanna model my NSX for me? LOL I really like it.... one question what motion blur settings do you use to get the wheels to look like that? When I rendered out a car I did with motion blur it seeme to only blur half the wheel??? I haven't played with it much since I finished school but I thought I'd ask anyways.

Actually one of my next works will be to model my custom suburban and my custom NSX. This work is inspiring for me... thanks and keep up the good work.

Can you show it from the back 3/4 view too?

Hi,

Just got word of this model, nice... Seems just slightly different to the one I made some time ago now in max5... It makes me wonder where you got your references from, as far as I understand you used the TAMIYA model No.204. But the car you built more resembles somewhere in between the model blueprints and the Box artwork (which is actually from a different season altogether). Different, but impressive non the less... It's good to see it done in MAYA, and note the differences from MAX.

@ASW_Design: i got the kit from a friend of mine. he is a car maniac. all his kits he gets from ebay. it's a tamiya model kit.

@chappo: i don't think that i will make an animation of it. i will take focus on new projects to create new wonderfull stuff :thumbsup:

@ch3: for the lighting i created a lightdome of directional lights in hdrshop with the lightgen plugin. it takes the values of the hdr image and the colors. so the lighting looks more natural. you have to take many lights that you don't see the single shadows. can take a longe time to compute them :)

@ mamurphy:i never saw an option to set the memory for the shadow maps. i played a bit with the samples which only helps a little. mental ray also seams to have problems with shadows of directional lights.


@all: i did not use the munkmotion tutorial to build my car ;)

I think this NSX is great, but I wonder why everyone else is so fixated on building this particular model.

I get at least 5 requests for these blue prints everyday, Im sure brainspoon will get just as many.

The point of people building cars/planes/bikes etc is to create something new and interesting, redoing something that has been done before isnt very interesting, so people, head the point, and go to your local model store, and pick something cool that hasnt been done before and surprise us with a new interesting image. 206's, NSX's, and Skylines have been done to death.

(PS. This isnt targeted at you brainspoon, I think your model is great).

i they build the nsx because it just looks sexy :)

i am not interested in cars at all, but with the model kit of my friend i had a very good and practical reference. i was able to study all parts of it and imagine how i can build them.
it was to improve my poly modeling skills. to model as clean as possible. i am one of those only-quad-maniacs.

Hello, very much impressing. I am already very strained on your second car. Perfect Modelin, Texturing, Rendering and Lighting. Also the Compositing is correct. You have the Maya Renderer obviously fully in the grasp. Further so!

Hi Brainspoon,

Great model.

I believe your rendering time could be reduced quite a bit if you remove the bottom half of your dome lights. Being below the ground plane they shouldn't affect the output of your image, beyond that of increasing rendering times.

no all lights make sense :) all cast semitransparent shadows. only a little to give a more ambient look.
the shadows take the smallest part of rendertime. it's the shader with the sheer amount of layered textures. i did not split the shader for different parts to have the editing easier

one advice.
do it like we other do it.
save 2000$. buy maya and lock you away a long time and learn it seriously.

but you can try the maya personal learning edition. it is free but with some limitations.
