i'm having some confusing trouble with assign controller, i'm linking and object to another object's vertex and it just work fine.. in the viewport. when i render it, the oject is far away from where it shows in the viewport.

is this some kind of bug? i'm using max5.1 and i just don't get it. very weird stuff from the fact that what shows the viewport must be the same in render. (no?)

please help :surprised

ps: i applied to the child object's position an attachment controller.. (just to explain the procedure i did.)

i found where the problem is.. the assign controller works by selecting a face number of another object, the problem is that when you apply a meshsmooth this number changes.

how is it possible to find the current face number after applying the meshsmooth? (i tried applying and edit mesh modifier after meshsmooth and selecting again the face i wanted but it failed.. if only shows: 2 faces selected)

is there any script or something abble to show me the selected face number after applying the meshsmooth?

thanx..

you could apply the meshsmooth and then collapse back to editable mesh.

on a side note, i once had a problem similar to this when i was working on setting up a 3-point float rig for a boat, to keep it oriented with the water it was on. worked great in the viewport, but when rendereed the boat always showed up in the same place (not where it was supposed to be). although i didn't have any meshsmooths in there

easy way around this.

create two versions of said object. meshsmooth the second. parent it to the lower detail version. add a visibility track to the lower poly version and set it to zero.

holy stupid me! :scream:

you'r right, i'll try this one. the purpose of this method is to attach a lower jaw to my character's head to be abble to follow the morph target i did.

hope the rigging will not bother me, i'll make a reference of the head and assign a controler to the jaw at the no-meshsmoothed head, normally if i use the morpher it will do the same to the reference.. hope it will work!

thanx a lot for your advice!!

going to test this now..
