ok...hi folks...i've done a test render for hdri using a home-made lightprobe, max6 and fR...you can viewthe test render image (http://www.geocities.com/me_aaeem/fotoreal.jpg) here...

my question is...how can i achieve hdri lighting and not having the bitmap hdr in my scene...simply put i want to have a black background but still maintain the hdri lighting from this render...

that's all...thank you...

Well I`ve only ever used hdri in V-ray.
I forget the total settings a bit now....but you want to make sure the hdri is not set in the enviroment slot in the render rollout window. If it is....it will show in your final render.

save your render as a .tif image with saving alpha in the settings. After that, open your image in Photoshop, load selection from alpha and replace it with the color you want.

another method:

don't put the hdr image as background but only in the skylight
and if you need the hdr image for reflection, create a big cylinder (flip all faces) put the hdr image as diffuse map, right clic on your cylinder and deselect "renderable" or "visible to camera" (i don't remember the exact term)

although only use a cylinder if your hdri is cylindrically mapped. if it is sphereically mapped, then use a sphere :D
