I posted this in the finished works forum and didn't get a single comment, opinon or critique. I don't have a specific question, I just want to know why no one ever comments on the work I post here (it's happened before with another piece I spent a ton of time on). Is there something wrong with my technique? Is it so confusing, no one knows what to say...? I can take relevant criticism - hell, I could tke it if everyone said they hated it but no response at all, what's up with that? What is wrong with my art?

I should probably add, I don't see this as a "serious" art piece. It's a rare bit of fan art I did for fun. Nevertheless, I do take the creation process seriously and I'm happy with the results. I'm just confused as to why no one has any opinions on it.

Anyway, here's the work. Created with The GIMP.

very very nice. only one critique since im no painter. The moon light is coming from behind your character. but he has alot of highlights on the front. unless i can see another lightsource it strikeme as very odd. Having your highlighs a bit darker probaly wounlt be bad thing, thry it and see how it works,

Thanks for the suggestion but...

Pretend there's a lightsource off frame, I did - that's why there are highlights on the front and if you didn't notice, he has two shadows and there's an orange glow in the lower right hand corner. Anyway, if this was really realistic, everything would be so dark, you wouldn't be able to see anything and the moon would be very small because in reality, it only takes up a few degrees in the sky - about the same as holding a quarter out at arms length and looking at it (or maybe it's a dime). Plus, 9,000 or so years in the future (which is when VHD is set), the moon would actually be even smaller than it is now as it is slowly moving away from us in it's orbit. If you know anything about photography, you could point out that the stars wouldn't be visible unless it was a very long exposure. Also, the angle of the tombstones is completely whacked and you wouldn't be able to see that kind of detail on them. In addition, how could there be fog if there was a strong enough wind to blow his cape around?

However, it's not photo realistic and it's not supposed to be.

I'm no painter either, but my eye is drawn to first the skull belt buckle, then all over the place. For me the composition is very bland really... Maybe shifting the character away from center; maybe more dynamic in the background, darker over all...

If there was a second light source in front of the character, there would need to be a shadow casting back behind it too... For that matter, the shadows on the tombstones appear to be going another direction entirely...

Nice looking style though.

To give this piece a little attention, firts off it's a nice start but heres what you could improve:

1)The belt buckle seems way to flat, try to create more space between the rim and the skull

2)All of his clothing seems to be made from the same material

You could either add some more detail to the shoulder pads and gauntlets, or go for a colour variation.

3) the eyes seem too painted, looks like they're just stuck on his head.

Maybe give it some specularity, some change in colour would give it dimension

All in all, although you've protested it, I'd say give the dude some darker shadows and just darken it up in general...itt'll probably make it fit in with the pick more and givve better definition to your off screen light source by making the highlights more prominent.

i never watced the series, but the skull looks a lot like the punisher logo. he reminds me the character 'chakan', from the old sega genesis game of the same name. :)

I really like your selection of colors, it seems you made that important. One thing I found is how tight his upper clothes are on his body.

1.) his body proportion dosent seem correct and the clothes tight on him just kind make him look flat

2.) I dont think they are that tight on him in the actual series.?

You dont have to defend your reason for doing this, I just wanted to point out my concerns.

Later.

My favorite thing about the colored version is how everything in the scene centers on him, good placement, its as if he displaces space or something, anyways cool effect
