ok, to restrict movement to the xy-plane, you Ctrl-click the z-axis.
But how is it done for scaling?

I'd like to know too if this is possible. I know how it's possible with objects, but not with components...

click on the manipulator icon in the channel box. and then ctrl+click select which planes you wish to scale. middle mouse button click-drag in the viewport to adjust values.

Yes, that works when in object mode, and all the information is listen in the channel box.. but when in component mode, nothing in channel box to select :hmm:

for polygonal vertices or edges, Edit Polygons>Move Component.

ok, thanks alot - at least there is a solution, although for successive scalings it seems a bit tedious having to switch between viewport - edit polygons menu - channel box.
Isn't it just possible to scale things without having to leave the viewport, as in other 3d-softwares?...

I saw a script somewhere (maybe on highend3d) that locked scaling in axises. Could be put in a marking menu or assigned to hotkeys I guess. Sorry but I can't recall where I found it - it's out there somewhere...
