Greetings people. I thought that I would show off my latest WIP. After exporting & importing till I was ready to pass out I came up with something to work with. I have now gotten it to a point where I am not ashamed to show it.

This is a new design for interstate 80. I was fortunate enough to get involved with this projects design towards the end of it. Since I have started a new business about 4 months ago I thought that this project would be a great candidate for me to model in order to get my name out there. My business' direction is moving towards modeling of engineering designs and photo simulations.

I have been involved in a number of modleing/animation projects, including one for the a Hoover Dam bridge concept designed to cross the canyon. In conjunction with the Hoover Dam project I also helped out with a new By-Pass design from Boulder City to this new bridge.

This is my very own creation as far as the modeling goes since I started out on my own as a CADD Designer/Modeler.

I know its pretty boring to look at right now but I will be posting updates of it as it progresses. There is a lot of landscaping that is involved in this project so expect to see trees, bushes, etc later on.

Enjoy

I added ray trace shadows to give it depth. I can see how its hard to visualize. Once the lane striping, trees, bushes, etc. are added it will take on a life of its own.

Played around with some textures for the brick pavers. The green areas are the landscaped areas that I have to focus on with particular flora for this project. I also made it a bit easier to look at. The original colors were a bit too much for the eyes.

Have not had much time to work on this model but I have played with the textures and lighting a bit.

I'm open to any crits, ideas, etc.

Here is a closer view.

And an update on the oblique view.

I have finally finished the paint stripping with the exception of conforming it to the roadway surface. Heres a look at it rendered and wireframe.

One thing I should mention about this model. It is built to actual scale and it is over 1200 feet long. A lot of the geometry is created in Microstation v8.

Looks pretty nice :)

Most of the artists around here are "cyborg-dragon-sword-anime babes with daggers" types, (j/k guys) so its kind of rare to see "The other side" of 2-d and 3-d art.

Could you post up some reference images of the area you are trying to show? Being unfamiliar with the functions of CADD and it's capabilities kind of limits my ability to critique properly, but at least by looking at the area I could offer suggestion.

Are you going for a "Absolute best 3-d representation" of the area? More for a technical display?

I do have one critique / question. I am assuming that the grey areas are the roads that represent onramps/offramps. IMO if you drew in the roadway stripes, and maybe for display purposes showed us the intended directions of traffic it might help us see your vision as well.

Can't wait to see more :)

modeling looks ok, but I certainly hope they don't use this design! the cross design is effecient and easy to use. there is no reason for those turn-arounds other than to trap drivers and use up real estate.

Yeah I am sure you don't see too many of these types of models much here. I know I have not seen any and I have been checking this forum out for quite a while now.

Obviously this design is controversial but yes this design is going into construction this May. Once I am done the landscaping will fill a very large portion of this image. There will be aspens and lodgepole pines lining both sides of the road as well as aspens inside the splitter islands directly in the middle. These trees will be 40-60 feet in height. Inside the crop circles (as they have come to be named by the design engineer) will be mugo pines, red stemmed dogwoods and rabbitbrush.

The surrounding terrain will have an actual aerial photo mapped to it so it adds a bit of realism into it.

Could you post up some reference images of the area you are trying to show?

Exactly what type of reference images would you like to see?

Are you going for a "Absolute best 3-d representation" of the area? More for a technical display?

Yes this is my goal. Right now I am just trying to get the model completed as it would look in design with lights and light poles and everything else, because my fiance has a contract with my client to do an artist rendering. I will be creating a "more technical" type rendering of this at another time.

IMO if you drew in the roadway stripes, and maybe for display purposes showed us the intended directions of traffic it might help us see your vision as well.

I am currently working on that part. Stripping has always been a pain in the butt and this project is no exception.

Sorry but its gonna happen. The town this roadway is designed for is granola town in the Sierra's. and they are happy with it. The design speed limit is only 25 mph. This is the very first design of its kind in California. There are other similar designs that are just speed reducers but nothing like this one has been built yet in CA.

I finally got it finished. The paint stripping that is. Took me some experimenting on the procedure but here is the end results.

Seems good but will be better if u can add somethings, like more details outside the road.

Read my first post in this thread and you'll get some idea of what its about. But basically its a project I'm doing for my business and I thought I would share it here to get crits on it, and ideas from others here.

Its been a while since I have had time to work on this project. I've been working on the 100% design plans for it and then I got sick so I lost almost a month of work time on the model.

Well I'm back into it now and its starting to shape up.

Here's the latest renderings.
