This is a character Im working on for a ut2k3 mod Im working on with members of the IGDA called The Longest Snowday. I have never attempted characters in this cartoony type style and am looking for advice on how to go about modeling the facial features. Should he have modelled eyes that buldge from his head? Should I draw his mouth and/or eyes in the texture. What do you think? Ive enclosed the concept rotation I was given, and a colored wallpaper of the character Im doing.

All of the answers to those questions really rely on what you guys are going to use the characters for. If I were you, I would talk to the othe rmembers of the mode team, and find out specifically what theyre going for.
For instance, if you guys are going to do facial expressions, then I would model the eyes and mouth to allow for deformations.. like a mouth cavity, and an eye socket that the actual eye sits in, with eyelids, etc...
At a glance, Id say make the feet bigger on your model.

Sounds like a fun mod to me!
I'm not sure what the best way would be, since I'm a noob. But I do know that modeling some of the cartoony features can make things a little wierd sometimes. Hopefully, someone with more experience will come along and give some suggestions.
Looks like your doing a pretty good job with it so far. Although it's a bit different from the concept(not sure how close it needs to be)

Cool concept! I agree w/Ancient-Pig, it's really up to what you guys intend to do w/the game, if it's gonna need seperate eyes and stuff. From personal experience, modeling cartoony eyes is one of the hardest things I've come across - I still struggle w/how to do that properly, so they don't look strange w/rotating. I'm sure you know this but, good games to reference are Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank, they seem to pull off cartoony features like that very well. I'd be interested to see how you progress w/this.

or if you see zelda wind waker they take expresional cartoon characters to the limit, but i think that may be a tad out of the unreal engines capabilitys, so you'd need your programmers to be pretty darn fantastic.
as for the model so far, looks good, although i think youve got the hat wrong already, you seem to make it suck in at the bottom, whilst the concept makes it pretty straight all the way down the head. and for that matter it should be a straight line for the bottom of the had yours is higher above the eyes and lower at the back.
im sure your concept artist made the turn arounds for a styalistic reason so i'd ask if its ok you deviate much.
anyways i really like the fact someones making a mod not based on massively cool killing machines, aliens, or terrorists.
bravo for the attempt hope it works out well for you all.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Im glad you like the idea for the mod. I've decided to go for a face of geometry instead of relying so much on the texture. I havent had a chance to show our team leader the face yet but I did show him the body without the face and he said, "that looks dead on with what I was hoping for" So hopefully he will feel the same about the face. What do you guys think?
He weighing in at 1908 tri's right now incase you were wondering.
It looks like you've got a great story and you've got a good start on the character...but from what I see your not staying true to the concept...i'd pull the hat down over the eyes a bit...no brows in the drawing....and i'd also make the eye's seperate objects from the model.....the edgeloops look good for animating facial expressions. He also needs some ears...but you've got a good start going and some good stuff to build from....keep it up. If you'd like any more feed back PM me with your email and I can help you more:)

Brilliant start to this adventure....Silva.
Eyes would be better suited to seperate spheres and eras might lend a hand at your design, without taking too much from the toonish look. Pulling the hat down a bit could aid in the overall look of him. Looking forward to seeing this process continue and crit some more.

Heres a little update taking some of your crits into account. I havent made the eyes spheres yet, but I will do that. I also got a crit from Jason "Dark Horizon" Sallenbach that he almost looks like a old man with those deep cuts around the mouth and the chin, so I worked on that as well. What do you think?

I think this is a great improvement. Some character is starting to form. The hat is a big improvement, I look back and the older version is sort of looking like some sort of russion hat dude compared to the new.
Yeah, those line kinda make him looka olda. Much better.
You might try to make the nose a tad rounder. I dunno.
Much better....looking more like the concept now....perhaps make the chin a bit longer....the head is more of an oval in the drawing and yours is more spherical right now....keep going:)

I coulda sworn that I'd seen the kid in the concept before... oh well. Looks good, just you might think about having the big oval chin instead of the one you have now.

Looks fine but I woulda pictured the features actually being more round and less defined. Like a big oval head with circular eyes and a tiny little hole for a mouth, more comical.

Looks better and now a bit like your concept.. ALthough that nose is throwing me off... It doesn't look right some how. I could ponder on what although it is you model to polish... KUDO'S to your new work....

ok, try this on for size. :]
I threw some simple diffuse/color maps on him in max nothing fance just colors to represent the ones shown in the color comp of him. Then after rendering it out took it into photoshop just to give him pupils. What do you think?

I definitely like the one with teeth over the previous one, for some reason that one looks a bit wierd.
He's lost his smirk from the concept though. If you could do that, then He'd have more character I think. The ears and teeth are a great improvement over the previous though.
I might have some more to say, but I just came down with some sort of throat infection, so I don't feel so good. Be sure to wash your hands after reading my post!! :p

The chin need to be longer (well, to be like the concept that is) and you could make the hat curve in the middle. Just a little.

looking better, but I think he's body is a bit too square compared to your concepts.
looking at your concepts the body should be as wide as the head, maybe the head is a bit wider than the body even.

I think that he was always looking a bit off because of the hat being over his eyes. Heres another character with a different hat. everything else is the same except his hat and the colors of his clothes. Its a wonder what a difference a hat can make!

You definetly need to use UT's ragdoll physics for this. Pegging one of these little guys and seeing them fall down a hill would be priceless.
the hat over the eyes gives him a much more mischevious look, which i think is better, but the shape of the hat is better on the red hat one.
this should be really fun.

not bad but it just looks really wrong to me
I live in the mountains and snow doesnt look like that. The snow on your texture looks a bit like the artificial snow you spray on the christmastree.
But the hat fabric looks good and the folds in the jacket are good to ...

I figured I was a little off with the look of the snow. It was supposed to snow a little in my area today but it didnt. If you wouldn't mind putting on some mittens and hat and stuff and going outside, getting in a snowball fight and taking pictures of the aftermath, I would appreciate it. Just send them to me via email if you are interested. It would really be alot of help. Either way thanks for the crit.

I agree on the snow though, we dont get it much here, but usually afaik the snow would begin to melt pretty fast once its on you, so it would just kinda dampen the clothes and disapate sorta. The snow on him looks like spray paint kinda.
Awsome work so far though, cant wait to try this mod :P

He really looks like a little rascal up to no good, keep it up!
(one thing that caught my attention in the texture, it looks like you mirrored the uv's for the hat. If you're textureing random spots of snow it would look pretty wierd if the spots were all symmetrical!)

the animation needs some help, the snowball just pops up for no reason, snowballs are actualy quite heavy.. you need some full arm and shoulder motion in the animation for it too.

now... lol, sorry to rag on ya, but I absolutly love this deal now.. Your snowball.. it goes up fine, (maybe a bit fast actualy) and comes down too soon... you need to remeber phsyics.. the projectile slows down to a stop then falls, so your linear up and down feels awkward, make it slow down (the EXACT amount of decceleration happens to be 9.81m/s² *:P*) then the accelerate downwards in the same mannor, then your catch needs a bit of a movement, (so it moves down into the next throw).

Ok heres a snowball throwing animation. He throws a snowball and picks up another to throw. I know that if someone in real life tried to get another snowball like that it wouldn't work but I dont think anyone wants to sit and wait for the kid to pack a snowball while playing a game:

wow, bryan looks awesome. can't wait to see it ingame. I like the little touches, like the right bending a bit, and the left foot, rotating for the throw. now u only have 70 more animation cycles to go, i think, for a custom character. can't wait to see him start throwing snowballs from the treehouse.:D
