View Full Version : Web page creating and hosting?
I searched past threads and I have decided to go with ipower for my web page(unless somebody has any horrors stories). As for creating it though, what did everyone use? I am laying it out in photoshop but I am not a HTMl wizard. I will most likely use frontpage and was curious as to what other people did?
Thanks

I've found most folks here recommend some free editors (they're starving CG artists after all) or Dreamweaver (they're pros). I however use FrontPage 2003 and have found it to be quite good. Can't afford Dreamweaver and FP is a good alternative. You can look at my site (click Web at bottom of post window) but I'll tell you right now it sucks until I start working on it again.

you can't go wrong w/ I powerweb
found them through here or highend, anyways, I was new to the whole process too, and their flash tutorials made it cake.
I used photoshop and imageready for my site, but I don't claim to be a web developer either. its just a simple site.

Flash and Dreamweaver, you can whip up your site in an afternoon and, depending on your talent at web design, it will be killer. I've been doing web design for 6 years, now thankfully going toward 3D, and they are the easiest combination. Of course you still need Photoshop to edit and Save For Web all of your images... It's easy in Flash also to add movies and sound.
cool, thanks guys.
I am looking to do something simple also. Dirtystimpy....I love the 4 wheeler and the rider thats awesome! my roomate from my first college works for clear channel and does tons of monster truck and moto cross things just like that!

If you use FrontPage be careful: FrontPage uses proprietary extensions that don't work on all servers. You have to make sure you're hosting company can handle FrontPage extensions and won't charge you extra for them, which they do because they are a pain in the a$$.
Don't waste your time with ImageReady. Photoshop can do everything ImageReady does, even write code, but it's not as messy as ImageReady. I was asked to use ImageReady to cut up and code a site for a client, it's a mess: http://www.primustel.com.
Also, Aplus.net is a decent hosting company.

I use:
photoshop - Design/template
imageready- for slicing
Dreamweaver- html/php coding

didn't know that, i'll have to look into not using imageready. Another thing I don't like about doing it in imageready etc is using text. Thats where I need to learn to use dreamweaver, etc.

thanks! where is clear channel?
the clear channel he works for is in illinois. But his company used to be sfx. clear channel bought them and they have a headquarters in texas it looks like. also, for chacacter desing I think rainbow studios is in arizona. Its a game company you can check out! The monster truck/motocross stuff he does is mostly VHS I think!

frontpage has more of these small differences which gives it it's bad reputation. Just don't use it, it might look fine in the beginning but it will get you in trouble eventually. If you HAVE to WYSIWYG... Dreamwaver.
I use good ol notepad (context actually)
I actually like imageready for it's convert layer to slice option and slicing tools. Might be possible in PS but in IR it's a matter of seconds.. and no mess at all
I am the server manager for our hosting company, most of our porfolio sites are built using Photoshop for the layout and cutting, then the pages are handcoded in edit+ or homesite by the coding team. I prefer to use FP2k3 for coding and Fireworks for layouts since its built for web graphics/layouts as opposed to PS's photo emphisis. I get much better per pixel layouts and optimization in Fireworks.

ive upgraded from Fireworks 4.0 to MX last year and the work is can do in it is much better.
as for HTML coding, try a search on Download.com for a free app called 1ST PAGE 2000.
i dont know how many HTML coders view these forums, but i for one, used 1st page 2000 years years ago and have since then gotten an awesome grasp of HTML-how-to.
once youve got enough saved up, go for the big cheese.
Macromedia Dreamweaver/Fireworks!
together make a fantastic bundle.
I am a wisiwig coder and grew up with FrontPage so i can whip stuff together quickly (yes, sadly IE is broken but IE is still the majority).
For you linux/KDE users, Quanta is a very sweet html editor with wisiwig support. Very neat. http://quanta.sourceforge.net/

I use photoshop and notepad. The best combination.
Go to http://www.w3.org/ and learn tables and basics of html. If you smart enough you can learn it in 1 hour...

I'm not a great html coder but I made mine with photoshop and notepad also. Though I switched to NZ Software's Bonfire Studio (http://www.nzworks.com/bonfire/index.asp) for text editing half way through.

I got a free copy of Netobjects Fusion with my old hoster, and it is great for what I need. It will have limitations compared to Dreamweaver, but I have not run into many. As it was free I love it. If I had to pay for it, then I would probalby be hand-coding using html-kit or something. There is also the composer that comes with Mozilla, but I have not looked at it.
Photoshop/Imageready/Cinema4d for all the content.
