View Full Version : Any really quiet DVD ROM's out there?

I'm looking for a replacement DVD ROM for my system but I need it to be as quiet as possible. My current one is a Creative PC DVD 12x and in comparison with my new Plexwriter 52x32x52, I really could use some peace and quiet when processing data or watching a movie off disc. The high pitch whine is really irritating. Any suggestions? (the one thing i like about the Plexwriter is all the work they put into the re-inforced drive bay door and shock absorbers so it's really quiet!!!)

mod it or get a slot loading dvd rom drive.

i think u just have a really old drive. out of date. u can get top of the range dvd rom for $20 approx. slot loading drives are quieter.

Mine is a Lite-On something or other and when reading off of a DVD you can not hear it unless you put your ear up to it but it is really obnoxiously loud when reading from CD-ROM.

nice...

can you recommend an online retailer of pioneer slot feed drives? I can't find any on newegg anymore. And another thing... have manufacturers modified slot feeds so they can accept non standard sized discs, such as those mini CD's or business card CD's?

that's a strange one... it's something to do with different read speeds from DVD v. CDROM I assume?

Oh yeah, I saw some Samsungs (or was it Sony?) that advertised active stabilizer technology or something that are to reduce noise. anyone have experience with those things?

What lite-on version?

I bought the lite-on version that storage-review mentioned as being "quiet". Damn thing is so loud you can hear it 20 feet away.

I probably just got a bad unit I figure.

If you really want a quiet rom...check a computer show for older 16x or less then 32X cdroms. They started getting loud right around the time they hit 32x.

I still got an old plextor 12x/4x at home...that thing is so quiet :).

my plextor seems to be dying... waa

but this is one thing to remember...

plextor has the same drive guts as a TDK... or Toshiba... i forgot

and Sony has the same drive guts as a Lite-On, same two companies crank out the drives, they just switch the bezels and market them

sneeky companies...

i have a plextor combo drive, and it isn't loud at all, but it does take about a solid minute before you can begin playing a dvd

yikes... old stuff there Greg. Anyhow, I would do that but I need a DVD drive working. I see a lot of spare CDROM's around the place but no old DVD ROM's.... oooh well. If anyone has any suggestions, please do provide some.

You can also get software that limits the spin speed of the drive. It will make even the newer blowdryer-speed drives sound quiet.

CD-ROM Tool (http://cdromtool.sourceforge.net/downloads.php)

Greg: I have no idea what model this Lite-On drive is. Does this number tell you anything (from the NewEgg order) DVD|LITE ON 16X XJ-HD166S

dabs.com in the UK has some.

edit: also greg check your private messages. :)

cheers

as a side note i don't reccomend using those "altering" softwares. if u need to change anything it should happen only in the bios.

your better purchasing better quality hardware.

i've talked to people where it did permanent damage to the drive after removing it.

your choice.

Answered your pm milkyman.

Well techically if your just watching a dvd movie, the 16x rom's should be spinning at 1x. I think thats the standard speed for movie streaming (on a software dvd player).

stephen,

Thanks for the model #. I'll check and see if mine is the same model. If so, I might want to return mine for a replacement :).

I've used Plextor drives and currently have a Plextor DVD ROM and burner in my system both are EXTREMELY quiet plus they are rock solid drives.

My drive is basically silent even when copying data off of a DVD (6x or so says the copy program). At that point it seems that the write speed of the HD is maxed.

Aye Stephen,

I was just pointing out if his drive is noisy at 1x, it could probably be the drive itself thats the problem. (Aka something physically out of wack with the drive).

I was thinking of shoving foam insulating around the sides of the drive between my system case and the drive itself to stop the vibration... but the hard part is finding out how to squish foam padding in there like that....
